Your “It’s Almost As Anger-Causing As Impeachment!1!1!!” Wednesday Evening Open Thread

NFL Noise:

  • Oh, it’s all noise today, as most football sites are obsessed with the news of Colin Kaepernick getting a workout this Saturday.
    • nfl.com points out the league set the date & did the prep.
      • And that Kaepernick’s workout will be run by scouting combine personnel and former NFL coaches.
      • This workout lies outside the collusion settlement reached earlier year.
    • espn.com writes about how this may all just be a smoke screen, as Kaep’s reps wanted the workout to be on a Tuesday, so interested coaches could attend.
      • By having it on Saturday, it means that only token representation can or will attend.
    • Florio points out that the league announced the workout before telling Kaep about their plans.
      • He dives deeper into conspiracy theory, noting that Kaepernick’s representatives initially expressed concern that it was or could be a P.R. stunt.
        • I’m just going to use a block quote for the big piece:

[I]t feels like this workout is far less about getting Kaepernick placed on a team and far more about creating the impression that the NFL is trying to help him get a job, without really helping him get a job.

And while it’s entirely possible that the league is pulling a P.R. stunt, the more accurate assessment may be that the league is concerned that Kaepernick eventually will file a second grievance alleging collusion and/or retaliation arising from his prior collusion grievance, which reportedly was settled for payment in the range of $1 million and $10 million.

  • And it seems many Twitter users read Seamus’ motivational piece today, because if they didn’t have an opinion on the start of the impeachment hearings, they were motivated to have an opinion on the topic.
Like this, only stupider & more racist.

————————————————————————-

  • Non-Kaep news:
    • The flex scheduling has begun in earnest:
      • Week 12:
        • Packers-Niners moved to primetime; Seahawks-Eagles moved to 1:00PM ET
      • Week 16:
        • A Saturday triple-header on the NFL Network (TSN in Canada):
          • Texans at Bucs – 1:00 ET
          • Bills-Patriots – 4:30 ET
          • Rams-Niners – 8:15 ET
    • The “blue ribbon” panel to decide the NFL’s 100 Greatest players (& 10 best coaches) was revealed today, and the schedule for announcing said team was laid out.
      • The reveals will start Friday, November 22 – to commemorate the Kennedy assassination, no doubt – and continue for six weeks.
      • The 26-member panel contains a broad, generally acceptable survey of football people, but what I found surprising are the mere four former players they used in the process:
        • Dan Fouts: Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback and veteran broadcaster
        • Ron Jaworski: Former NFL quarterback and veteran broadcaster
        • Ozzie Newsome: Pro Football Hall of Famer and two-time Super Bowl Champion General Manager
        • Art Shell: Pro Football Hall of Famer, former Head Coach and two-time Super Bowl Champion

That’s it for me. I’m off to the #contentmines to craft some magic, but I’ll be back Saturday night for broadcast map previews & to politely complain about who replaced Don Cherry. (It’s gonna be Burke, isn’t it.)

yeah right

I am the recipient of the home grown crop of our own Wee Baby Seamus’ bumper crop of Ghost Peppers AKA Bhut Jalokia.

I received the package yesterday.

Thanks?!

Imma fuck with this with a certain amount of fear involved.

I will run this through the Sunday Gravy test kitchen, I just fear the “run-off”.
I love a good challenge.

Thanks for the effort TWBS. Seriously.

May the lord have mercy on my colon.

Okay, less than 40 days until the shortest day of the year and things start to turn around. I can make it. More importantly, I can make it without drinking myself into oblivion every night. One out of three should suffice.

I’m hopefully closing in on a couple jobs myself, one as an actual law-practicing dude. However, until then I’m grinding away and still haven’t figured out how to make what I want to be my real job one that actually pays. Although I’ve had enough time that I should have figured it out by now.

The Bengals say they’ll be evaluating Kaepernick’s workout on Saturday. Personally, it would make sense to take a flyer on Kaep because if it works, suddenly that opens up the 1st or 2nd overall pick to Chase Young, or trade it down for additional picks for those desperate for Barrow or Tua.

However, I doubt it for three reasons:

– Bengals have a history of improving with the draft and not free agency. They prefer to groom their own players to fit their mold. Brown has been burnt too many times by overpaying free agents for negative returns on the field.
– Mike Brown is a shitty GM but a great businessman and he wouldn’t want to risk alienating half the fanbase and the cops by signing Kaepernick. Its shitty and wrong but that’s business.
– It would make too much damn sense.

blaxabbath

The Bengals’ mold sucks.

Redshirt

Yup, I know it.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

It is also VERY difficult to remove from tile grout.

Unsurprised

For as long as I’ve been following your torment as a Bungles fan, their grooming of fresh, young talent has been what I’d generously call the opposite of Jeffrey Epstein’s successes.

Am I the New York Times? Because that comment had zero copy editing before it was published.

TheRevanchist

“Bengals have a history of improving…”

I love the humor in this place. I really am starting to feel right at home.

blaxabbath

So we bought this house and it came with cameras in the house (like one inside facing the front door from the ceiling over the stairs; one on the front porch; and one on the back porch). They were supposed to go with the previous owner but were left behind, all wired in. The box for it is in my hall closet and — that’s all I know from here. I don’t know how to turn it on or use it or connect it or anything. Do these things have resets or what?

Also, we have built-in speakers in the living room. The wall plug has all these different cable connection things available. I don’t know what to do here either. What should someone charge me to come set this up for me?

Doktor Zymm

Just stick things in other things until they work. Also, the person who previously owned the house is totes spying on you.

blaxabbath

That’s cool. Being watched makes me feel even more like BritFarve!

Unsurprised

Blax is the bigger man

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

When are you inviting the “sexy neighbor” over?

Doktor Zymm

So I’m low-key looking for a new job, and goddamn I forgot how much extra work it is, even though I’m barely doing it at all. I spent a chunk of last Sunday doing a takehome assignment for a Senior Data Scientist position (apparently you never get away from this, wtf?) and I have phone calls lined up for next week. I miss grad school.

blaxabbath

You jump around jobs a lot.

I don’t mean this to be critical — if I weren’t tied-AF to my job, I’d be constantly on the hunt as well — I am impressed and curious at what the new opportunities might be fore someone who is competent and capable…rather than just his father’s son (raises hand and is Sill).

Doktor Zymm

Industry median is switching jobs every 1.5 years, so I’ve actually been above median on my last 2 jobs. It’s the new normal and recruiters give 0 shits. I started getting recruit emails within 3 months of my last job change. I suspect most places put the break even at 1 year. I’ve been at Facebook longer than ~65% of the company, and from what I’ve noticed it’s at about 18 months that you start finding what’s wrong with a company, and it may or may not be worth switching, but it’s always worth keeping an eye open and comparing. So not actively looking, but responding to interesting recruit emails and applying to maybe 1 job/month that looks good.

blaxabbath

Wow — that is serious turnover.

Unsurprised

Facebook has gotten it all down to a science. You can’t have the labor stick around long enough that they start wanting “equity” or “rights” or “lives.”

Redshirt

Agreed. My problem with my job is I have so much seniority that I have a lot of leeway in my job that it would be hard to give up. Not just the vacation or understanding if I have to take a halfday or PTO suddenly because of family reasons, but I’m trusted by so many people there that people take my word and I don’t have to defend or explain my findings.

If I didn’t have that, my resume would be on every desk in the OH/KY/IN Tri-State Area.

Gratliff

It took me a long time to get my ideal job. I make enough, but half of what I could elsewhere, but pay doesn’t mean a lot to me compared to flexibility and non-shitty bosses, so YMMV. I don’t miss the job hunting AT ALL. AT ALL. Fuck recruiters and job posting aggregation sites and the one guy who keeps emailing me from linkedin that I haven’t logged in to since I got this job who asks me every few week if I’m still doing SCCM work. If I have my way, I’ll never interview again. Every time I get roped into interviewing someone now, I last about 5 minutes before I interject with “This sucks, right? Let’s just talk shit.” I have no patience for the process, nor any respect for it.

blaxabbath

I listened to the impeachment hearing opening remarks in the car this morning. As I pulled up to work, Gym & Co were arguing their process points about subpoenaing the whistleblower. When I got to my desk, I enjoyed watching the attorney’s question the witnesses and, before my lunch meeting (Famous Dave’s, not to brag), even got to see a little of the congressmen asking questions.

After lunch, I didn’t get to see anything else. I’m trying to check it all in now. That dude Taylor just laughing at every attack Gym and the guy suing an imaginary cow took at him was boss. I’m glad the witnesses are at least correcting every BS statement from the GOP.

I’m guessing the media is presenting today’s affair as a stalemate though.

Gratliff

The thing that I noticed most was Nunes opening with “Dear Emperor God Trump, It would give me the greatest pleasure to gargle with your piss. Please make me your next chief of staff, senpai.” Seemed a bit unorthodox, but you can’t deny the effort.

blaxabbath

I can’t believe they actually went with like Crowdstrike as their arguement in the hearings. Seriously? That’s what you throw on FoxNews for their addict viewers who need to just hear ANYTHING. For civilized people, you’re going with, “No collusion except the democrats!”?

That is a bold move, Cotton.

Doktor Zymm

I’ve been to a really good brewpub in Nunes’s district, but I haven’t met the fake cow he’s suing

blaxabbath

If I recall correctly, the cow has to do with his family moving their farm to/from his CA district to/from some midwest place?

Doktor Zymm

Isn’t it a twitter cow?

blaxabbath

I guess. I think all that broke around the time there was an article about his family moving their farm.

I don’t put much effort into knowing about Nunes because I think he’s such a obvious joke. So, as you might imagine, I was SHOCKED, to see he was the guy the GOP was counting on in this dark dark hour.

Doktor Zymm

It’s both!

TheRevanchist

Which pub? I’ve probably been there in the last month.

Unsurprised

Cable news is a joke. Trump’s cultists are right for the wrong reasons.
