Cleats on the Ground – WBC (US v VZ)

First off, thank you to Low Commander for the new header.

Pregame again was same beer but better food. My buddy knows how to cook and I’m just happy to be fed.

First vuvuzela heard right before the game started. Thankfully wasn’t heard throughout the game.

Christian Yelich, LF

There was a guy that, every inning, would call out “C-Y” or “Yelly” like he knew him. Yelich never looked over once.

Drew Smyly, SP

Smyly gave up an infield single to Jose Altuve on his first pitch.

I can’t believe how short Altuve is but he’s an amazing player.
Felix Hernandez, SP and Rougned Odor, 3B

King Felix seemed to injure himself after fielding a ground ball but he shook it off and dominated like he is known to do.

This WBC squad member was worried her slingshot would break.

This slingshot has seen better days.
But it survived another day.

There weren’t as many Venezuelan fans as there were Dominican and Puerto Rican fans for game 1  but they did their best to make their presence known.

Celebrating an Arenado strikeout

These guys got featured a couple of times on the big screen with their masks and flag/capes.

USA pride

Odor rounding third

Odor’s solo home run put a damper on the evening. It didn’t seem like the USA squad would be able to do anything against the Venezuela pitching staff.

That was until…

Jones goes yard

Adam Jones ties it up in the 8th!

And then…

Hosmer homers

And just like that, USA has the lead.

Ex-Padre Luke Gregerson closes out the game by inducing a double play.

Game 1 had a better atmosphere considering the lack of scoring but when the USA squad started hitting, everyone was on their feet. I think both games had about the same number of people in attendance which isn’t a good thing since it was less than 20,000 for each.

I would not have been able to concentrate since I would have spent the entire game giving Odor a standing ovation due to that Bautista TKO.

That was a helluva game. Had me cheering at home like I was at the ballgame.

1) It is really incredible how much beer you can drink. I can barely go past two nowadays.
2) Fucking Steelers fans. That is goddamm embarrasing.

It really is jarring to see Altuve up close. He’s maybe 5’5″ but damn can he play.
