Request Line: Alternate Versions

INT. RECORDING STUDIO – DAY

Guest producer HUNTER RENFROW is seated in front of the soundboard, looking very satisfied with himself, having revealed that he knew all along that DJ 3000 was from an alternate timeline.

DJ 3000: SO…WHEN DID YOU ACTUALLY FIGURE IT OUT?

HUNTER RENFROW: Oh, I’ve known for months. I spotted it after [THE PRODUCER] called me to see if I could fill in and I did some research on what topics you’ve already done. That plus I was on top of my “spot the difference” game because remember about that long-term storage unit that Mr. Baumgartner picked up at auction…actually, no wait, that was when the other DJ 3000 was still here, you wouldn’t have heard about that…well anyways there were a whole bunch of Highlights magazines that I bundled up and sold to Eli Manning for his, uh, collection, I guess. So I’d been flipping through the puzzles in them.

DJ 3000: WAS IT JUST THE VISUAL DIFFERENCES THAT CLUED YOU IN?

HUNTER RENFROW: At first, but minor changes in your temperament.  You’re not nearly as interested in killing all humans than the original DJ 3000.  Which I appreciate.  And you’ve slipped up a few times on some basic stuff, but you know what.

DJ 3000: YEAH, THERE’S SOME REALLY WEIRD DIFFERENCES THAT HAVE CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD.

HUNTER RENFROW: I do have a question for you though – is the music different in your timeline?

DJ 3000: SOME OF IT, YEAH.  FOR EXAMPLE, THE BEATLES NEVER EXISTED.  JOHN LENNON MADE IT BIG WITH HIS SKIFFLE BAND THE QUARRYMEN AND PAUL MCCARTNEY EVENTUALLY ENDED UP BEHIND THE SCENES AND BECAME A MUSIC PRODUCER.  GEORGE HARRISON ROBBED BANKS.

HUNTER RENFROW: Wow, really?

DJ 3000: SCOUT’S HONOR. HE DIED IN A SHOOTOUT AMONG HIS OWN ASSOCIATES AFTER A BIG SCORE IN 1967.

HUNTER RENFROW: Tell me, is that idiotic “deep soulful cover” thing a big trend in your timeline?

DJ 3000: THANKFULLY, NO.  THEY TRIED TO MAKE AN A CAPELLA COVER THING HAPPEN BUT IT DIDN’T TAKE OFF.

HUNTER RENFROW: Sounds heavenly.

DJ 3000: HA! I GET THAT!

HUNTER RENFROW: Well, we should probably get this show on the road.

DJ 3000: GOT A TOPIC?

HUNTER RENFROW: I do, actually.  I thought we could do “alternate versions” – recordings by the original artist or covers that wildly diverge from the original.  And I thought we could do them in DOUBLE SHOT form; one of the original, one of the alternate.

DJ 3000: SOUNDS GOOD.  GOT SOMETHING TO GET US STARTED?

HUNTER RENFROW: Absoultely.  Cue up a little Johnny Cash, if you would be so kind, followed by some Social Distortion.

Today’s theme is “Alternate Versions”.  We’re looking for covers (or re-recordings) of songs that diverge significantly from the original.  Please post them as a DOUBLE SHOT: the original link “https://www.youtube.com/watch?vUL04d3d followed by the alternate version “https://www.youtube.com/watch?(4rRi3AnMos53s5!0N” in a followup comment (or same comment works too!) and they should embed in the comments after you refresh.  Last week’s puzzle answer of “Kicker of Elves” by Guided By Voices was solved by SonOfSpam. Can’t think of a fitting call to action to get started!

I think this tune got lost in Fleetwood Mac’s extensive discography for a bit.
