My goodness that weekend went by quickly! I spent most of it stewing about two judges. The first was Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who used to work with my wife in the San Diego prosecutor’s office and is the current target of Donald Drumpf’s ire thanks to the prospect that his Mexican heritage would induce bias in the suit against Trump University. Because antagonizing the judge and hollering “I’m not the racist, YOU’RE the racist!” is a really good legal strategy. The second was Judge Aaron Persky, who decided that rather than actually punish rapist (and All-American swimmer!) Brock Tuner, a lengthy sentence in prison would “have a severe impact on him” and sentenced him to only six months in county jail, with the prospect of good behavior reducing it to only three. Persky is no Judge Michael T. Sauer, I’ll tell you that. Strangely enough, I actually feel a bit of sympathy for Stanford in this one, because although Turner was a Stanford student at the time of the crime, he’s not anymore and I haven’t seen or read anything that suggests that Stanford responded to this inappropriately (by, I don’t know, sending the swimming coaches out to intimidate the witnesses, cough cough Baylor University). And yet the institution’s name is very firmly attached to the story. Not too much sympathy, though.
On to the music!
