The Bleergh Report – Conference weekend

ALL HAIL BLEERGH.

In tribute to Bleergh (the God of Penalties), here are the Conference weekend’s best and worst penalties. I was unable to find the data in anything other than PDF (NFL gamesheets) this week, so these numbers are what I found from said game sheets.

Here’s a random breakdown of this weeks penalties.  I may or may not try to find the tape for these, nor am I making any judgement call on the individual penalties.  I’m sure that there are plays that should have been called and were not, and other plays where the penalty wasn’t needed, depending on your fandom.  This is mainly me looking a some numbers and publishing my findings, so let me know if there’s something you would like to see added or removed to the list.

Here are the bestest (in the eyes of Bleergh) penalties of the week:

Team Penalty Result
No points taken off the board nor any fun or strange penalties this week

These plays* have multiple flags.  This pleases Bleergh.  *No plays with multiple penalties, but these are both back to back plays with flags.

Offence Defence Description
TEN KC (8:35) (Shotgun) PENALTY on KC-C.Jones, Neutral Zone Infraction, 5 yards, enforced at KC 42 – No Play. X4
(8:35) PENALTY on KC-X.Williams, Encroachment, 5 yards, enforced at KC 37 – No Play.
SF GB (12:17) (Run formation) Penalty on SF, Delay of Game, declined.
(11:54) (Punt formation) PENALTY on SF-M.Nzeocha, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at GB 39 – No Play.

Here are the worst (in the eyes of Bleergh) penalties of the week.

Team Penalty Result
TEN Defensive holding( declined) – free  play- 60 yard again for TD TD
TEN Defensive Too Many Men on Field – KC tackled for a loss of 1 yard 5 yards
GB Ineligible Downfield Pass 0 yards

Here are the Best (in the eyes of Bleergh) penalties of the week.

Team Penalty Result
TEN DEFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE 41 yards
GB Roughing the Passer 15 yards
GB DEFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE 5 yards
GB DEFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE 6 yards

It (finally) occurred to me that I should try to show the penalties to the offence that a big gain is wiped out.  So, here’s the first attempt at that.

Team Penalty Penalty yards Play gained (yards) Total lost
TEN Offensive Holding 10 8 18
GB Offensive Holding 10 5 15

And here’s the total number of penalties per team this weekend.

Team Penalties against Penalty yards Ave yards per penalty
SF 2 10 5.00
TEN 8 85 10.63
KC 9 61 6.78
GB 6 46 7.67

Just the usual false starts, hands to the face and PI calls.  Too lazy to get the actual numbers.

*note that the zeros are penalties called from previous weeks but still in the list.  Way too lazy to remove them and it ups my word count. Ha.

Up till now, i have found the play by play data online and pull it into Excel and run a bunch of formulas\rules\searches to get the numbers for these posts, and then poke around in those number for things that stand out.  The last few weeks, the sites that I get the data from have not been updating the data so have either had partial data or have downloaded the gamesheets to do the numbers manually.  In looking around to try to find other sources of play by play data, I stumbled upon a stats software package that not only should replace what I’ve been doing in Excel but will let me do some more advanced things.  So, my plan is to import some of the data from this year and to replicate the Excel stuff there, but then to also extend the things to look for in the data.  I’ve got a few things I’d like to add to these posts ( eg free plays for the offence), but wondering if there’s any requests\ideas\thoughts\suggestions from the group as to what you’d like to see.

Also, not sure that it’s even worth doing a Superb Owl report.  But maybe there’ll be something goofy to show.  We’ll see.  I was also hoping to do a year end kinda thing, but due to the lack of complete data at this point in time, that does not look possible.

ALL HAIL BLEERGH.

I remember all my dad’s t-shirts from back in the day. “Joe Knows Super Bowls”

Well, this SB coming up is going to be a special one because my team and his blatantly cheating 49ers are going head-to-head in the greatest matchup to be ever be seen. I’ve got buddies who want me to come over to see the game. Think I’m just going to go to my parents house with a large party platter and a blanket so we can watch & eat, nap in the Lazyboy, and wake up just in time to see Patty M. hold up that trophy.
