Sharkbait’s Cocktail of the Week: Amoretto Sours?

Yes we’re still unpacking here. That means I still have not found my cocktail books. That is going to be the goal for this weekend, believe me. However, what I DID find while unpacking is an open bottle of Disaronno Amoretto, and decided to utilize the last bit of the bottle. Somehow this escaped my attempted purge of mostly empty bottles pre move, but I’m glad it did because now I can finish it off by making an Amoretto Sour!

Since I’ve liked every sour I’ve made here, I decided to give it a try. Having only made a Gin Sour and a Whiskey Sour, before, I was interested to see how a sour with a much milder flavor profile would work. I hope I’m pleasantly surprised… Per The Kitchn:

2 ounces Amaretto
3/4 ounce bourbon
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 ounce simple syrup
Lemon peel and maraschino cherry for garnish

In a shaker filled with ice, add all of the ingredients and shake until chilled. Strain into an ice-filled glass. Top with a lemon peel and a cherry.

Nose is fairly neutral, the only flavor I can pick out is the lemon from the juice and the peel garnish

That’s a sour alright. The lemon flavor dominates, but the simple syrup and the amoretto keep it from being too intense of a sour flavor. The amoretto comes in next. Disaronno is an almond based amoretto and I was a bit concerned it would team up with the simple syrup and completely cancel out the sour but happily that is not the case. The almond notes actually compliment the overall flavor palate here. The sour citrus and whiskey each compliment the amoretto in different ways, but they still maintain the balance of the overall flavor profile.

The whiskey somewhat comes through at the end, but I think it might be there to act more as an ABV boost, and act as an underlying note. Which makes sense given the ratio of the other ingredients to the amount of bourbon added here. I’m ok with this actually. I made an amoretto sour, not a whiskey sour. I don’t necessarily want the whiskey to take a starring role here. It suits its purpose just fine.

I would highly recommend this. It has more body and depth than a gin sour, and isn’t as intense of a flavor as a whiskey sour. If you’re looking for a good after dinner sipper and have Disaronno on hand, mix this one up.

Amaretto is totally underrated, especially in OJ as a breakfast airplane drink.

Haven’t done it in years but loved it.

“Underrated” in the States perhaps, in Europe it’s properly rated .. which reminds me to pour me a glass in all of y’all’s honour (that and it being one of several days in the year I celebrate not dying – in this case, a car accident where a semi pinned me to a concrete guardrail… not a bloody scratch too, unlike my shitty ass first car that died saving my arse) 😀

Agreed. Disaronno in particular is great.
