Why care. Nothing is permanent. Every tingle felt from eye contact, and all smiles, hugs, lusty grabs and “You were right”s are but fleeting seconds of smoldering bliss that time blows away like ash from a cig. Emotional attachments create longing and melancholy or even worse—sadness, a dull and dreadful bidness that has the power to transform persons into organisms who change underwear weekly.
And this is what the NFL wants: to turn fans into grieving runts each offseason. Missing the NFL plays right into the commissioner’s nefarious hands. Or not. I’m not worked up about it.
What I do think is that—wait
we have to live in the present.
Everyone revels in nostalgia, but that is treacly emotional meth that distracts us from our daily trivialities. But we relive our Ws, I guess. If prone to reminisce about your incredible Week 13 win in your work FF league despite having to start Mike White at QB and Christian Watson as WR1—stop yourself. Be in the present. Look around. Examine your surroundings. Take your time. See? There is an enormous amount of mundane crap that you could acknowledge. If one feels like it.
No too high highs and not too low lows–but what about neither? No high or lows, period, just a steady stream of equanimity. Examples:
Mechanic: It’s not the car battery only. We have to replace the alternator.

Conquering our own emotions is the principal order in all milieus—school, work, sex swings… But if you are never that into any of it, you eliminate all meddling emotions. Some may say that’s a problem when trapped in a soul-sucking situation. Well, why have a soul; the problem may be you. Or not. On second thought, be you. Yeah, however you feel about it. But keep in mind: millennia of long marriages were built on the bedrocks of apathy and resignation.
