Great Falls of the Potomac is about 15 miles above Georgetown, with an 85’ mean elevation drop flowing into Mather Gorge. (Mather Gorge is named for Stephen Tyng Mather who was the first director of the National Park Service; he is also the namesake of the most popular viewing spot at the Grand Canyon, Mather Point.) Little Falls of the Potomac is at the downstream end of Mather Gorge about 5 miles above Georgetown and is the geological “fall line” which extends up the eastern seaboard. Georgetown sits just below this at the navigable head of the Potomac River, with access to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic. Thus, Georgetown’s site has access to plentiful fresh water and also world trade. The C&O canal was built along side the Potomac from Georgetown inland to Cumberland MD to add allow freight to get around the falls and rapids and open the upstream agricultural areas to outside markets.
