Happy Friday! I’m presenting this week’s drink from a hotel bar in New York City. Dad Sharkbait is in town for a work trip so I made arrangements to come down and grab dinner with him since he’s normally on the West coast. After a great dinner, and post dinner drinks at a bar around the corner from the hotel, we parted ways as I was not ready to retire for the evening. So I posted up at the hotel bar for a nightcap. Normally I’d venture further away from the hotel, but it was pouring rain and I didn’t want to deal with that. I found an interesting twist on a Manhattan called a French Phantom Manhattan.
It seemed interesting so I got it
It has a very neutral nose. Not surprised given that cognac is the main spirit. It’s milder aroma doesn’t carry as much weight as a bourbon or especially a rye whiskey would.
That’s an interesting flavor. It’s a lot sweeter than I would have thought it was. Granted I’m used to whiskey Manhattans. Cognacs are a different animal, one that I haven’t played with all too much so I shouldn’t be surprised that this is trending in a different direction than expected.
I think the cognac enhances the sweet vermouth at play here. I can definitely pick up on those flavors more without the signature rye whiskey “burn” on the palate. I think that might be the bigger culprit when it comes to picking up on the sweetness than the cognac base mentioned above.
The finish is fairly consistent with the rest of the flavor palate. Not very strong tasting, a little more edge to the sweetness and a quick dissipating mouth feel. I’m intrigued with the addition of the cognac as the base and I think I want to try playing with it more as a ln alternative to whiskey that I tend to default to in a drink like this.
Update on the end of the drink. It finished way too sweet for my liking. I don’t know if the residual cherry syrup sank to the bottom but the finish to the drink itself was unpleasantly cloying. Still worth trying at home, but maybe with a Luxardo cherry instead of the neon red variety. I kinda feel bad but I instinctively made a face when asked if I wanted another one. I chose a dry gin martini instead to finish up the evening.

Good news for Rikki – Maxxx Crosssby says he’ll be “200 percent ready” for the start of training camp. If his math is correct, this can only mean a Raiders Super Bowl win.

I’m sure the bartender didn’t take it personally that you dissed his drink and cast a shadow over his entire existence. He’s probably grateful that you pointed out his glaring inadequacies, and allowed him to finally realize for sure that there was no point in going on. I bet his final thought as he hurled himself in front of the 6 train was” thank God that Masshole showed up and convinced me to end this misery!”
Good jerb, Sharky. Hero!
I did feel kinda bad about it. I doubt she noticed since it was last call when I went martini
I would think that she wouldn’t take it personally.
Some people like the sweet stuff, some don’t.
If anything, the person who named the drink should reconsider. I feel that a “Manhatten” without bourbon or rye is not really a “Manhatten”, y’know?
Bryce Huff announced he’s retiring. This new 27 Club is a whole lot healthier than the previous one

Redshirt! I’m glad you’re ok. I was afraid Bigfoot got you!
He did, but the Grim Reaper took me back to the Mortal Realm while I was in line to meet St. Peter. Something about my knees.
At least you & Bigfoot didn’t have to meet the Pope…
Yeah based on the ingredients that just sounds too sweet. Like my dog!
So it doesn’t need more dog.
“with a Luxardo cherry instead of the neon red variety.”
TOTES. I hate those candy ass maraschino cherries. Their artificial flavor can ruin a drink.
(btw, i recently had a manhatten with a Fabbri Amarena cherry. Pretty damn good, and I was told that they are less expensive than the luxardos)
Not only are they less expensive in normal circumstances, but Costco sells them in MASSIVE sizes that make it even cheaper. Trader hoes has amarena cherries that work, too.
What other products are available at trader hoes?

You know they’ve got stuff that makes the booty go POW
Also, has anyone ever asked AI to explain why switches get teh bitches?
If you ask Grok it’ll explain how Elon COULD get all teh bitches if he wanted to but he’s too busy saving humanity and totally not paying people to level up his video game characters for him
Ya know, with all the other shit lately, he’s been flying below my “people who need to stop existing” radar. Thanks for the reminder!
His major Tesla shareholders got ahold of him and said “Dude you’re fucking up my equity. Knock this shit off.” And he did.
Well, not so much a change in behaviour. He’s just being quieter about it.
Amarena cherries are yum
Interesting, it’s like someone who didn’t like lemon juice decided to crossbreed a Manhattan and a sidecar. Let me know when you’re having one of those, and I’ll try and make one around the same time for taste test coordination!
