It’s Sunday, which is always the worst day of the week for me. The reminder that I am closer to being back at my desk and another week of pulling data and telling everyone where they are wrong. Yay!



In addition to the normal stuff, tomorrow is back to school. With one offspring doing online high school, I have one child I do not have to worry about. The one that returns to school tomorrow is the child that makes me worry. They have a new principal this year and hopefully he’s not some Tramp* loving a-hole.

Luckily, the school district said kids must wear a mask and need to have spare disposable masks when they return to class tomorrow. And my offspring is a bit paranoid.

The Olympics are done. And now we have the closing ceremony tonight. I don’t know what to expect, but will probably not watch. I think we got to see enough fun for the last couple of weeks to last until the Winter Olympics next year in vuh-China. The amount of COVID cases around the Olympics is around 430. Man, we just need to wrap this up and go home.

Anyone watching anything fun? I’m bored with TV right now. I need football back already. That HOF game was just not good.  And the Giants already beat the Brewers today.  

Geez.  I’m a Debbie Downer today.  Someone post some stuff to cheer me up.

Probably the weirdest thing about Chernobyl, for me personally. It happened in my lifetime, but early enough that I have zero memory of the event. I have memories of watching Bowling for Dollars (that was apparently my favorite show when I was wee and the start of my college fund) and memories of riding an elephant (I was on the back and scared I would fall off) but no memories of the closest we came to the death of civilization

I was a Rickover trained nuclear engineer in the navy and I still don’t understand Chernobyl. And for Fukushima it’s astonishing how many mistakes they continuously made. It’s like a Japanese cultural issue where men were afraid to correct their boss. Three Mile Island, on the other hand, there was not a single health issue inside or outside that plant due to that accident, and they had a 96% core meltdown. It was a naval-style pressurized water reactor and most of the employees were U.S. Navy trained nuclear engineer veterans.The Three Mile Island accident should never have happened in the first place, but after it did the casualty response by the crew was excellent, unlike Chernobyl and Fukushima. The only real victim of the Three Mile Island accident was the enormous financial loss to the parent utility company, Metropolitan Edison.

There were a few airline crashes caused by similar Asian culture issue, they had to do a huge amount of training to try and overcome it. Notable was one Korean Air crash where the aircraft just ran out of fuel because they wouldn’t communicate the severity of their situation to ATC who had them in a holding pattern

I’ve got a very busy two days to start the week, not sure what happens after that.

So I’m dicking around having a couple of beers to try to ignore the poison ivy and mosquito bites I picked up doing a metric shit-ton of yard work today.

Mass extinctions of plants, birds, mammals, insects, etc. going on right now but fucking poison ivy and mosquitos are out here thriving.

All the Mess Management Specialists (cooks) on my ship were Filipinos. We were served rice EVERY FUCKING MEAL. It turned out they were making two meals for every meal; one for the Americans and one for the Filiipinos (we had a lot on my ship). They did not get in much trouble, probably because the ship’s executive officer was also from the Philippines.

@Anthony, I too once had a shih tzu named Maggie. One of two dogs i inherited from my grandma, and while she wasn’t named after the song, we did call her maggie may.

I honestly thought she was the dumbest dog i had ever owned, till I realized she just didn’t give a fuck.

She’s gone now, but we still have her little brother, and naturally this is the best shot ingot of him

When my mom had her businesses, she had a 2′ x 2′ paper cutter that made a pretty gnarly noise when operated. Old Buster hated the sound of that thing, and would go hide whenever mom used it. Guess he was able to imagine his tail getting lopped off by that thing. It did sound pretty sinister.

She’s so lovey (in part because she has MAJOR separation anxiety, I think). It’s funny to see her try to get that lil’ peanut brain working when things don’t go the way she expects. Poor baby.

But she doesn’t poop in the house and all she wants to do is snuggle, which is basically all I ask of a dog.

My GF won tix to go to Austin on the Radio Station Bus to see Rod back in the late 80s. I was very disappointed in the leopard skin tights and the fact that he did not sing “Every Picture Tells a Story” (my personal favorite RS song) or “Mandolin Wind.” On the bus back from Austin, the radio station DJ lady asked me what I thought of the show and I responded “Rod is ready for Vegas.” I think he was booked to do a recurring show at one of the casinos shortly thereafter.

430 out of 11,000+ athletes coming to Japan is actually not too bad. I’m guessing with support staff included, the number of visitors is probably twice that, which makes the total look even better.
