I enjoyed a cute little comment on 538 about Brexit and it was some whining screed about the oligarchs of Europe punishing the noble Brits for just wanted to be free of regulation.
It’s almost hard to believe people that legitimately think they can dictate to others that they want all of the benefits of a relationship and none of the cost and act STUNNED that others may recognize those terms for the bullshit that they are.
I don’t know, just get like Germany and the Nordic states to leave and have them team up and stop subsidizing countries that don’t want to have anything close to a working budget and some that don’t even bother to collect taxes (Greece).
I see no parallels in the geography and how it would look if you moved the map over our country right now.
The EU does have problems, but considering the spike in UK searches AFTER last night’s vote asking what the EU actually is I’m not thinking the average Briton had a nuanced criticism of the EU’s current structure. Regardless, the U.K. now has zero ability to influence a market it really needs, so whatevs.
Semi-related: I was chatting with a bartender in Uppsala about this and she remarked about the Scandinavian countries forming the own mini-EU. (They’ve done it before!) I’m not sure Sweden and Denmark would leave the EU for it, though.
The best part is that if they want to sell their goods or provide their services to the EU THEY HAVE TO FOLLOW THOSE REGULATIONS ANYWAY

I made that point yesterday on how I don’t understand how the world economy is going to collapse, they don’t use the Euro, don’t have access to foreign workers, have to follow EU regulations anyways if they want to trade, trade rules are set up for 2 more years. It won’t. Investors are pissing themselves because they like stability and certainty and this decision is packed full of neither. When in doubt, they’ll be pessimistic.
Hell, because of the time it’ll take to actually execute a departure, it’s entirely possible that the people will get cold feet and tell their MPs to they want to stay. I don’t think the EU will be so spiteful as to force them to go through with this, but who knows?
Any excuse to make a buck by destabilizing the currency real humans use by exploiting and amplifying nanosecond fluctuations using supercomputers that would be put to infinitely better use doing literally anything else — Wall Street will do it.
And the financial media will run interference for them then absolve them of any blame once they’ve wrecked everything yet again.
And the political media, and therefore virtually all national media, because politicians are owned by the banks and the media only gets access through appeasing politicians and the whole process repeats itself while some shit weasel on CNBC finds a new scapegoat to rile up Teabagger idiots just like what happened in 2009.
