I’m calling today because I just got a contract extension and —
Yay! That’s fantastic news!
Uhhh, yeah. Yeah it’s good, man. Actually made me the highest non-QB player with an extension worth $27 million-plus per season, including $42,750,000.00 at signing today.
That’s healthy. Well done.
I thought so, right? But more important to the deal, to me, was using this as an opportunity to learn more about the process. You know, I want to be a general manager myself someday and I figured, what better time than now to start learning the business side? So I took the reigns of this negotiation. Now, I know you’re big on sitting back and letting the agents work it out but I hope I didn’t make a bad choice.
You’re the highest paid non-quarterback. What the hell could you have possibly done wrong here? Look, I let my agent sit in a room with the GM and negotiate because I want nothing to do with negotiations. Ever. You came in on your first deal, took an NFL GM to the cleaners, and you think you need advice? On what, man? You’re an absolute stud here.
Well, people are saying that I could have gotten more if I’d taken a backseat approach. I don’t know. I don’t want to second-guess myself here.
Gotten more? How much more?
Well, I don’t know. Me and my business team thought we pretty much got our number and we are happy with the terms.
Then that’s it! You got a record contract and ‘people say’? I don’t give a damn about people. You’re doing exceptionally well man. Sure, maybe you could have gotten more but, let me aks you something: do you care? Do you think whatever the different might be is worth the cut of successfully leading your own negotiation? I know these agents says they’ll consult and give you a class or whatever — this is gameday reps. What you did was, in football terms, basically go off on Steve Keim for 700 yards on seven catches with seven touchdowns AND LEFT HIM SMILING. Who could doubt what you’re doing here?
I guess. I just, you know, I wondered.
Look man, you got nothing to wonder. You took care of business and now all you gotta do is get on the field and ball out. It’s too damn bad Simple Mike is gonna ship you off to Trump’s Victory Army in November because I was really looking forward to covering you Week 13.

Completely off-topic, but my manager has set up a “water cooler” chat on our Teams channel, and today it’s been nothing but “where were you when you heard about the World Trade Center” and I am this close to replying “Wait, what happened to the WTC!?” and just getting fired right there.
I think if it would be worth it if I didn’t have three more tuition checks to write.
