Mann Cup 2022 Game 6 Recap

Game 6 of the Mann Cup was played Friday night, between the Lakers and the Thunder, and yours truly was in attendance as I have season tickets with a friend. We sit almost dead centre just a few rows from the top of the lower bowl. They are great seats.

A late scratch is Thomas Hoggarth. With this being possibly the last game in the series, it’s got to be pretty serious for him not to be in the lineup. I hope whatever it is, that he recovers fully.

It was a sold out arena tonight, with over 4,000 fans in attendance, which was awesome. As a lacrosse geek it was fun to try to pick out current and former players in the stands. They did make it easy to spot two of the all time greats, in John Grant Jr and John Taveres , the original, not the hockey one, as they presented Shawn Evans a trophy for the most Mann Cup points. The hockey player Taveres was in attendance a few games ago and was boo’d when introduced. haha

2 of the all time greats

On to the game:
First period:
Langley got out to a quick lead with Dylan Kinnear potting a goal just 27 seconds into the game. Kiel Matisz would answer for the Lakers about 4 minutes later to tie the game. Langley then got 3 of the next 4 goals to have a 4-2 lead after one period of play.

Second period
As this could be a series wining game both teams played some great defence to start the second period. Shawn Evans finally got one past Frankie Scigliano about 8 minutes into the period. That would be the last Laker goal of the period as Langley then went on 3 goal run to end the period with a 7-3 lead. Shawn Evans did sometime to his right leg and left the game with about 8 minutes to play in the period. Not good for the Lakers. As time of writing I’m not aware of how bad the injury is, as if he could have played at all after the injury, he would have been back. With the Lakers already being down Hoggarth, being down Evans too is a huge loss for them. The Laker trainer was busy all night with multiple players needed help off the floor.

Third period
Dane Dobbie opened the scoring in the third period and they would get anther goal about 5 minutes later.  But the Lakers were only able to put one past the goalie in this period as well, even with the goalie pulled and a few power plays.  The player of the game to me is Frankie Scigliano who only allowed 4 goals on the night.  9-4 Langley is your final score.

Curis Dickson had a goal and 5 assists to lead the Thunder. Dane Dobbie had 4 goals and 2 assists. Robert Church chipped in with 5 assists.

Holden Cattoni lead the Lakers with a goal and 2 assists. Mark Matthews had 3 assists. Poor Joe Resetarits had 2 assists and just could not put one past Scigliano.

For the second time in the series, a defensive player was named player of the game for each team. Both goalies were the player of the game for each team.

While a game 7 is nice, I’m not sure who is going to win tonight. With all the injuries to the Laker forwards, the offence is going to need to step up their game. The defence has been playing well, as any time you can hold the opponent to 9 goals, should get you the win. For Langley, they need to get a quick start to keep the fans out of the game and for Scigliano to have another great game.
