I was watching ‘The Bear’ when I realized I hadn’t written this post yet, which is dumb because I’ve known what it was going to be all week, but knowing that meant that I could just keep kicking that can down the road because I knew what it was going to be.
Anyway, Richie was apologizing to Natalie when I remembered this, so I put the show on pause right when Natalie was looking all pensive and
Hnggh! And she’s damaged from a hellacious upbringing with a batshit crazy mother? Sign me the fuck up and bring me my tool kit! I can fix her.
Hang on, Mrs. Horatio is informing me that Natalie is not real and that even if she were I could likely not, in fact, fix her.
We’ll get the draft in a second but if you are not/have not watched The Bear, and if you have not seen The Banshees of Inisherin you need to remedy both of those with a quickness.
/looks at word count
Anyway, the draft!
This week we rely once again on Rikki-Tikki-Deadly who, when not dodging vacuums, does a great job coming up with draft ideas, as does Scotchnaut. The rest of you, frankly, could be doing better. As this off-season draws to a close and we prepare to move out of this space for Hippo Thoughts I do want to thank both of them; you’ve definitely made my life easier.
RTD was so excited about this draft that he kept after me for a couple of weeks, and I do think it’s a good one, although maybe not for Redshirt who might be too young to know what the hell’s going on.
This week we’re drafting bands from that long ago decade of mystery, mirth, and Ronald Reagan fucking up everything he touched like some kind of reverse Midas. Seriously, fuck that guy and his goblin, (that’s a pun!), wife.
The rules are simple yet complex. It must be a band. No solo acts. The band does not have to have only existed in the 80’s but it must have had its greatest impact in the 80’s, which is completely subjective and likely to generate all sorts of arguments, which is something I’m looking forward to. I already plan to get pretty much no work done tomorrow.
For instance, one of the bands RTD mentioned was The Ramones. The Ramones were indeed active in the 1980’s, but to me, (who is very old and for whom everything hurts), The Ramones are a 70’s band because that’s when they got their start, that’s when their best albums came out, (fight me on this), and that’s when they got their reputation as America’s first punk band.
But you could (and someone almost certainly will), argue that they were an 80’s band because they did a lot of stuff, (some of it even legal), in that decade as well. So go for it, but be prepared to make an argument.
Rikki has given me his first pick. Ladies and gentleman, The Smiths are off the board.
Not sure Rikki’s reasoning behind the pick, but to me they’re a perfect representation of the 80’s because they were never as good as people said they were, and also the lead guy made a bunch of money and then turned into a reactionary asshole when he got older.
With the second pick I’ll go with a band I think is a great representation of the 80’s as well, albeit for different reason, Athens GA’s REM.
Probably the first of what I’ll call the “jangle-rock” bands to make the leap from heavy college-rotation enjoyed by the 80’s version of hipster dipshits, (like me), to selling out arenas, (like the New Haven Coliseum, may it rest in peace), REM had, (imo), its best work in the 1980’s with albums, (remember those?), like Murmur and Life’s Rich Pageant.
The rest of you are on the clock.

The Bangles

Susanna Hoffs just makes my brain stop working, like that Tex Avery wolf cartoon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8vHq9mqZCc
How did RTD let this slip through his fingers?
I’ve been vacillating on it all morning. The bottom line is that I’m just not a huge fan of their music. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good music and I *like* it, I just am not willing to spend a valuable pretend draft pick on them.
Your rockstar girlfriend is about to make you sleep on your rockstar couch.
First of all, she’s mine. Second of all, well, there is nothing else.
We really need this battle to escalate. I think it’s got real potential to outdo the cookie wars.
We need a cleaned up 4k version of that video – stat!
The Tragically Hip.
I know that they only had one album in the 80’s but meh, it’s a start and it’s a good one
pound for pound the best bo jackson tribute album out there ppl forget that
“Greatest impact in the 80ies” Well, OK then… ZZ Top had some great tunes in the 70ies, but nobody can deny their greatest impact was with Eliminator and those great videos.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae829mFAGGE
Netflix has a good documentary on them making this exact point. Also a great line from the dummer talking about his addiction: “I don’t know if you’ve ever tried heroin, but it’s great!”
I think I saw that. Frank Beard is hilarious.
I deny this. Tres Hombres, and Fandango! were their greatest MUSICAL achievements. 70’s Top 4evah!
X released ‘Los Angeles’ in 1980 and ‘Los Angeles’ has the song Soul Kitchen on it and that’s all I need to make this my 4th pick.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5ikNYY0JgQ
If were going for the pure 80’s sound?
Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
Runs up to the microphone while ArmedandHammered is distracted by Sheena Easton
I PICK PRINCE IN THE FOURTH ROUND!
1999 (1982)
Purple Rain (1984)
Batman soundtrack (1989)
Yes, only ArmedandHammered was distracted by Sheena Easton. No one else. Certainly not me.
I’m not sure those are the “solo acts” RTD was referencing…
All of the New Power Generation stuff came after 1990. Which means you get…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5QGkOGZubQ
For my 2nd pick, I’m taking these suave fucks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlLCC_gF8QY&pp=ygUOc3BhbmRhdSBiYWxsZXQ%3D
looking for other picks is hard as I was twas a kid for much of the 80’s ( was 5 at the start of the 80’s) and most of the stuff I can recall has already been picked or was released in the 90’s
5. I realize I don’t have anybody on my roster that has the classic 80’s sound, so I’m dipping back into the Pretty in Pink well and going with Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, also known as OMD.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPmTGFg06zA
fuck, also on my list.
I was just going to pick these guys too. The name alone screams 1980’s.
So in falling down the 80’s video rabbit hole, just watched U Got the Look by Price and Jayzus Fuckn Christ was Sheena Easton hotter than the sun.
You are not wrong.
Sugar walls, man. Sugar walls
Great metaphor, or greatest metaphor?
The Police.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si5CSpUCDGY
My dilemma with The Police, The Clash, and Van Halen is that most of my favourite songs of them were from the 70s.
Yeah, I had that same quandry with The Cars (& a lot of other bands drafted, really), but since they all didn’t really get big until the 80ies I went with it…
True, but remember you get the albums from the 80’s, not necessarily the songs. The Clash, for instance, released a to of great songs in the 70’s, but did’t put them on albums until the 80’s.
Pretty sure that’s what counts for this draft, but will defer to RTD on that.
6th pick: Run-DMC
damnmit this was my next pick
Since I’m late, I’ll take Men At Work (also I was at this show on Friday)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8134t5zi6Bg&ab_channel=NancyGerman
Kind of interesting to have stumbled onto this blog post this morning, given the subject of last week’s Request Line:
https://kottke.org/23/07/robert-reichs-uc-berkeley-class-on-wealth-poverty
I’ll go with Beastie Boys.
While some of the later albums were awesome, Licensed to Ill was released in 86. Gotta fight for your right to parrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrtaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayy
/ clocks back in
The Pretenders
If I have to have some hair metal, Def Leppard.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4dHr8evt6k
I prefer this: Both for the music and Dee Snider vs. Tipper, plus NIEDERMEYER!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9AbeALNVkk
If we ever did one-hit wonders, sure.
As for Dee Snider, I think One-Armed Drummer beats Dee vs. Tipper.
They had more than one hit, they had this and I Wanna Rock, but to be fair that entire album was actually really good and should have gotten more air time for the other songs.
Forgot about I Wanna Rock, my bad.
The Clash.
I had to look this up to be sure, but London Calling had its US release in early 1980, Sandinista! came out later in 1980, and Combat Rock in 1982. Cut the Crap came out in 1985, but I’m going to leave the one in the remainders bin where I found it.
So I am technically correct in getting London Calling, and as we all know by now, that is the best kind of correct.
The Cars.
Although their first couple of albums were in the 70ies, most of their heavy hitters & fame came in the 80ies. (& they just got that 80ies sound)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_2qkBsf6dA
I basically hated the Car’s 80’s music, much preferred their 70’s stuff.
“Woe to you, oh earth and sea
For the Devil sends the beast with wrath
Because he knows the time is short…”
4. UP THE IRONS!
Iron Maiden (1980)
Killers (1981)
The Number of the Beast (1982)
Piece of Mind (1983)
Powerslave (1984)
Somewhere in Time (1986)
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988)
I mean come on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYXz3vZvtL8
James.
My work is finished.
As an 80’s band? That only gets you Stutter (1986) and Strip-mine (1988). Gold Mother and everything else came later.
Me, realizing that RTD is going to run the hell out of this draft:
First time I heard them was on 91x in the 80’s. I’ll stand by this pick.
Plus one just for 91X
I have a presentation to give in a couple of minutes so I am a little early, comeon commish:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nXGPZaTKik
I was going to pick that up for my next one.
That’s Culture Club for you on mobile.
Surprised this is still out there.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di60NYGu03Y
That’s Pet Shop Boys for the Control F crowd
Dead Kennedys
Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, Plastic Surgery Disasters, Bedtime for Democracy.
bonus, this pick might make that steroid-addled raving loon RFK Jr. cry.
It’s right there in the title.
Killing Joke.
And if you haven’t heard or seen them lately?
Fix that shit.
At last someone picked up on the featured image.
I’d recognize Jaz anywhere just a little slow waking up.
The only song I’m familiar with is the title. As the kids say, it slaps.
They’re still recording. Do some research. These guys grind heavy. Raven played bass for some years in there when he wasn’t playing with Uncle Al in Ministry.
3. The Talking Heads. My “Pretty In Pink” board kinda got blown up by Hippo, but this is perfectly good value in the 3rd round.
Dunno who WCS is gonna kill first when he wakes up, you or LemonJello
Gets me:
Remain in Light (1980)
The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads (1982)
Speaking in Tongues (1983)
Stop Making Sense (1984)
Little Creatures (1985)
True Stories (1986)
Naked (1988)
That’s a solid haul.
Yeah but Talking Heads 77 and More Songs About Buildings and Food are 70’s.
Yup. Character concerns like that are why bands slide in this draft.
If you throw out everything but Remain In Light and Speaking In Tongues, you still have a great pick.
You only need Fear of Music for a Hall of Fame career.
3rd Pick: Van Halen
Diver Down (1981)
1984 (???)
OU812 (1988)
Was wondering when they’d be claimed
They were on my board but I missed my chance cause I was walking the dog. Same with the Psychedelic Furs.
Counterpoint: No.
Although I hated his music, he was definitely 80s music in a nutshell I give you
Howard Jones and please take him.
Wait ten picks or 30 minutes, sir; you are not an Ork raiding party.
Howard Jones remains on the board, and I am in agreement he should stay there.
Sorry, I know I was a bit early, but I am having to pay attention to work and can only make picks when I have a few seconds. So please forgive me.
Also
Wait, he was able to spew out that much shitty music all by himself? I thought it took a band to do that.
This has kept me off the work laptop, and down (non-Q-anon) YouTube wormholes, all morning. Hippo is grateful. Other Hippo says this is why I have had such a mediocre career. But anyway, pick the 5th,
Yes, I was enough of a dork to call them D-squared. I had this single on one of them mini-records, along with several others. Then every 80s album on casette for my Walkman. This particular song was racing up the charts as NC State hoopsball went on its magical 1983 tournament run(s). Pure bliss, these memories. Plus, I have the same birthday as Simon LeBon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJL-lCzEXgI
Haircut 100
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_msHpEa3_Y
With my 5th pick, I’ll take Mötley Crüe.
I got the beat. (And Belinda.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3kQlzOi27M
U2. Their 80’s stuff is their best stuff, and Bono hadn’t quite crawled all the way up his own ass.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EM4vblG6BVQ
Boy and October were ridiculously good. They get lost in…Bono’s later phases.
I’m embarrassed they weren’t on my radar. That’s a tremendous pick.
Goddamn, you people jumped all over this one. Good job RTD.
With the second pick I’m taking Minnesota’s greatest band, (sorry ‘Mats fans, but in your heart you know I’m right), Husker Du. Just pretend I put the umlauts in there.
They were at their peak in the 80’s, including one of the greatest albums ever, New Day Rising. Honestly I’m not even sure they made it to the 90’s intact. if they did they didn’t last long, and their major label work was never as good as what they produced for SST.
You mean these?
Ūü
Thanks, Blair Walsh. You nailed it!
Aight. 2nd Pick: RUSH
gets me: Permanent Waves(1980) Moving Pictures (1981) Exit…Stage Left(1981) Signals(1982)
(LemonJello is now Prime Minister of The Canadia)
I hope he can do something about the fires.
“SoUrry aboot those fires, eh?”
-LemonJello’s press office
It’s been 30 minutes, and I am not cool enough to call them such…but King Hippo selects the massive 4th round value P-Furs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T87u5yuUVi8
With my fourth pick, I’ll take Shawn Spencer’s favourite band:
Tears for Fears
Back across the pond? Sure thing, Other Hippo! Merseyside’s own – and YES, Everton supporters – Echo and the Bunnymen (bonus tidbit is that I heard this song played over the Goodison loudspeakers pre-match):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_bJf3foa5I
Damn, I was hoping they would linger long enough that I could get them with my third round pick.
I was cursing not making them my 2nd rounder. And of course, I really could have saved Fun Boy Three. Monday strategery, yo.
Yes, I suspect Fun Boy Three would have been around just a little bit longer.
funny way to spell ‘undrafted free agent’
Gotta say, Fun Boy Three is a good pick just for the name.
/Buddy Cole has entered the draft
“Why have one fun boy when you can have three?”
With the third pick, I’ll take Depeche Mode.
Even though Violator came out in 1990 and is, arguably, their best, I’ll still take them.
/Starts violent argument about whether or not a year ending in ‘0’ actually belongs to the decade that started with ‘1’
The Mats. I can do without All Shook Down
For Ctrl-F purposes, this means “The Replacements”.
2. INXS.
Gets me:
Underneath the Colours (1981)
Shabooh Shoobah (1982)
The Swing (1984)
Listen Like Thieves (1985)
Kick (1987)
These all hold up really, really well. Excellent pick.
Were you, like Young Hippo, in high school in the late 1980s, trying to chase some hipster pussy? Then you gained a proper appreciation for Violent Femmes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ag0XRlEvap8
That’s wild, I always thought of them as a 90’s band but their first three albums came out in 1983, 1984, and 1986.
I bet that’s because you are a few years younger than me and you hit this…phase in 1991-92 instead of 1988-89!
That’s exactly right!
Yeah, Hippo and I are about the same age and I got into the Femmes in high school, (there’s an awkward phrase), which ended in ’87 for me.
Yep, college spring formal of ’86 we kicked the DJ off the stage (he sucked), started this album and moshed the night away in tuxes and formal gowns. Ahh, the fun times.
Armed and I are both tall, so we have good mosh pit memories!
/for me, was mostly Raleigh-area Sex Police concerts, circa 1991-96
I should add that one of the conditions I suggested to Horatio (and he can confirm whether it applies here) is that you are only drafting the albums that said band produced *in the 80’s*. So for my inaugural pick of The Smiths I’d get:
The Smiths (1984)
Meat is Murder (1985)
The Queen is Dead (1986)
Strangeways Here We Come (1987)
Plus the compilation albums like Hatful of Hollow and Louder Than Bombs.
Rikki did, in fact, say that.
Draft accordingly.
Blondie. Yoink!
https://youtu.be/TU3-lS_Gryk
I think of Blondie has more 70’s, but given the subjective nature of this draft, as well as her work in the 80’s, the pick is allowed.
With my second pick, I’ll take New Order
Peak 80s video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfI1S0PKJR8
Don’t get much MOAR 80s than Fun Boy Three!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWLdZFCMx8Y
Siouxsie Sue and the Banshees
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nAON-MwUPY
With my 1st pick, I select:
Huey Lewis and The News
I liked this band a lot. Really dug their adult vibe as a kid.
Does anyone remember the rumour that Huey Lewis had a ginormous cock?
/frantically opens 8 different search engines
-Deanna Favre
Gentlemen, I thank you for letting me take the number one overall pick: The Cure
Sourry, Litre!
