Hispanos en Todos Lados: 2026 Mundial Final, Finalísima

Cómo me voy a sentir. Beh. Uuu ju ju, jeje. La Final es hispana, ¿okei? Oye ICE,

Had to warm up from the heart, sa ree. Let’s get to the game, which is freakin’ compelling in many ways.

Argentina v. España – Nueva Jersey, 3 EST

La Final has more narratives than One Thousand and One Nights. First, there’s the WTF! about the 2007 photo of a 20-year-old Lionel Messi with baby Lamine Yamal for a UNICEF charity calendar. But we all know what that means:

The easiest angle for this game is the colonizer v. colonized matchup, a most satisfying rooting interest. Spain colonized the hemisphere, but by 1820 Argentina was already independent. Since then, Argentina has been more commonly associated with Italy and being a Nazi sanctuary. And argentinos are infamous in LATAM for claiming / wanting to be European. IN FACT, during a June 2021 visit from the Spanish President to Argentina, then Argentinian President Alfredo Fernández said: “Mexicans come from Indians, Brazilians came from the jungle but us Argentinians arrived in ships, and ships coming from Europe”—tl dr

In a sharp contrast, ARG’s coach Lionel Scaloni recently referred to his players as indios. After Argentina’s win over England in the Semi, this is how the coach described La Albiceleste’s players:

These players are like Indians, may the word be understood. They have grown up in extreme situations, where they were not afraid of anything. They are not weighed down by the responsibility, they play as if they were seven or eight years old.

Full disclosure: Scaloni then added “Indians, in the best sense of the word”, a phrase likely taken from a Michael Scott sensitivity seminar.

Let’s set aside the VARgentina stuff for a moment and think about the team’s performance. Argentina players are fierce and do not back down. While Enzo Fernández’s tying goal against ENG was a beauty, the go-ahead was straight-up guts and guile:

The 2-1 winner was an ARG header by the 1,75m Lautaro Martínez. Lautaro, now THAT’s a killer Indian name. But, to be clear: ARG v. ESP is not indios contra españoles.

Spain and Argentina have treated each other with respect and deference. Scaloni studied to be coach at Spain’s Royal Spanish Futbol Federation’s school. (Scaloni obtained one of the highest five grades in the school’s history.) One of Scaloni’s teachers was ESP’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente.  Both coaches became friends ever since. In fact, Scaloni showed up for the press conference last Friday only because he knew de la Fuente was going to be there.

Sigh. If you watch from YT, you’ll see real affection between both coaches. And I’m on record calling Scaloni a most un-Argentinian nice guy. Although, full disclosure: Madre and I went to an Argentinian restaurant yesterday and the staff was above and beyond. Goddammit. Acts of kindness are my hater kryptonite.

As for España, they have been the quiet and steady powerhouse of this Mundial. Spain’s low points occurred at the group stage: the fabled 0-0 tie with Cape Verde and the 1-0 win in an “extreme battle” against Uruguay. In that game, Spain’s Nico Williams came in as a sub and got injured, and Yeremy Pino got knocked out of the tournament from a clavicle injury. Since then, Spain has not suffered much. Only Belgium has scored a goal against Spain (one), while keeping clean sheets throughout. And I’m still amazed how ESP’s constant passing frustrated the French in their Semi.

I don’t think Argentina can either dominate Spain (the current European Champion), or even intimidate Spain after the roughing it received from Uruguay. But Argentina, no doubt, is on a mission. It got ideological.

Against imputations of favoritism, Argentinians branded themselves as warriors (white warriors), against the woke mob who make up conspiracies and want to give a leg up for developing futbol nations—i.e., every single knockout opponent until England. This superiority discourse from ARG is hegemon talk, not indio rebellion. And if you do not favor this view, you can see examples of F*F* favoring Messi–most recently, Mesi being the reported 2026 Mundial’s Golden Ball Winner even before the Final starts (per Spanish si.com) Argentina is the establishment, which is why stuff like this happens:

Predicción: In a final between campeones continentales, I think this will be cracking game. And I also predict that I will keep an open mind* about the 30-minute halftime show.

* Thinking it’s an abomination, but not on the level of commercial hydration breaks. Yet.

PS – If Spain wins, that means that 47 will have to give to them the World Cup. ♫Awwkwaaard♫

You claim to be poor, yet you have children, a commodity which regularly trades on the black market for several thousands of dollars? Curious, curious…

Surprisingly they make almost all of their food in house. Very little comes from big supply companies

They have excellent cheesecake. No shame in that game!

Even though MetLife Stadium (aka “New York New Jersey Stadium”) is technically the replacement for the now demolished Giants Stadium that was immediately next to it, it is still The Meadowlands” which was the home of the New Jersey Generals of the USFL, who are still considered a great team that suffered from a dumb shit owner.

In what might be the mildest of mid-life crises, I’ve decided to prioritize a couple of the more difficult to get to places I want to visit over the next couple years. Looking at Socotra trips or Tristan de Cunha for late next year. Probably Tristan

Isn’t Tristan the place that only gets one boat a month and has no air access?

You’re going to spend a month in an island with 200 people?

Doktor Zymm

Yup, and the boat trip is 6 days each way. It’s actually less than a boat a month, about 5 a year and they each stay for a different duration so it’ll be anywhere from 6 days on up on the island itself. It’s also closer to 300 people.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

So you’re saying that’s better or worse than West Baltimore
