The Little Idiot

Once upon a time a little idiot was born. The little idiot knew nothing until one day his older brothers forced him into little league baseball. Funny he showed signs of some (Let’s not push it) skill and fell in love with game. Later the idiot’s mother played music for him and being the dullard that he (still is) is didn’t like the Beatles but loved Luciano Pavarotti.

Some time later the little idiot grew into an adolescent idiot and learned about girls. Oh No!!

Now he liked them just fine but that music thing? That spoke to his soul.

Along about 1974 the idiot now a desperate teenager heard Black Sabbath for the first time and proceeded to immediately lose his shit. More drugs were needed right away as the music required dedication and devotion. Only hard cores allowed on this bus.

That music changed the trajectory of my life.

When I was a teen my grandmother came by for a visit and noticed my t-shirt. It was a Black Sabbath “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” tour shirt and she told me one day I would be sorry that I wore such a thing.

That never happened!

Around the same time say 1975 I started really watching baseball. Since I had now been playing organized ball in the summer for some 7 seasons. I fell in love with the Chicago (don’t get me started) Cubs. Loved afternoons with Harry and Jimmy Pearsall. Those guys would drink mass amounts of beer and forget there was a baseball game going on.

In my early twenties my favorite team introduced to me my soon to be favorite (Still is and forever shall remain) player. Ryne Sandberg.

Yes that is both his rookie and an autographed model, thanks for asking.

I was fortunate enough to have gotten to see him play (sorry so many suds swallowed have forgotten many details) several times and either he or Andre Dawson hit a home run in every game I saw during their era. Every one.

In the last couple of days both Ozzy and Ryno have died.

Who’s next? Richie Blackmore? Stephen King?

For good or bad both of these men had a huge impact on my life.

Was watching the Cubs play earlier today and man I love the Pete Crow Armstrong kid and metal?

Without Black Sabbath there would be no Overkill. No Slayer, hell there would be no thrash at all.

Some people die while others live on. One thing is for certain I will miss these lads for all of my remaining days.

Thank you and God speed Ozzy and Ryno.

Why yes I do have Christmas lights up in my room at all times. this was given to me for a birthday by my son Adrian.

Recently both “Brick Meathook” and “ballsofstealandfury” were forced to meet me. You can ask either or both at your leisure what shirt I was wearing when I arrived and they both will answer the same.

It was of course a Black Sabbath T

This cover of the original (that is far, far better) never gets the credit it deserves.

Posting the Sandberg Game reminded me of trying out for the traveling baseball team when I was 11 years old. I’d never played organized ball before because my mother couldn’t afford the traveling costs.

Coach: “What position do you play?”

Me: “Uh, infield?”

Coach: “You’re left-handed, you can’t play the infield.”

Me: “Yes I can.”

/Long Story Short-that coach tried me out at 2nd, Short and Third and eventually had to put me on the team

//Why? Because I was a OCD kid that had a wide gravel driveway, a concrete retaining wall, a baseball glove, a tennis ball and hours and hours of free time. I had the best glove on the team and it wasn’t remotely close.

I watched this game live and all the while I was thinking, “but he’s just a second baseman”

Don’t log me into Todd’s Surf Journal just yet but there’s nothing like shredding TSUNAMI WAVES BRAHHHHHH.

If I’m not mistaken (and when am I ever?) the title of the song is taken from a classic story from Surfer Magazine about a guy who escapes a sinking ship on his surfboard and ends up as a castaway on a Polynesian island.

And that’s a young Patton Oswalt in the video.

I already listen to the Ziggens so I’m in the lifestyle

As soon as he walked in, I told Brick, “That’s DJ TAJ!”

Only because he was wearing that T-shirt.

DJ TAJ was indeed wearing a Black Sabbath shirt!

We missed him last Saturday at what was going to be a trip to Cole’s restaurant before it closes this Saturday (so many people have been coming they postponed it to next month). instead we went to Philippe’s. Hopefully TAJ can make the next one, when I get back into town.

SonOfSpam

Cole’s is staying open longer than next week due to demand.

You did it.

ballsofsteelandfury

We can return to Philippe’s!!

Possibly because I was in northern Nevada in 80’s with no real MLB team to follow BUT a healthy love for baseball card collecting, Sandberg ended up my defacto favorite player when I found I had a lot of his cards and also played 2nd base in pitching machine baseball. I could have picked much worse players.

I got his autograph at some signing event in Tucson. These were not regular occurrences. I went up, got all star struck at my favorite player, and got my autograph. I’d like to think I was another of those forgettable interactions in Ryno’s life that made the fame, wealth, and personal sense of accomplish all worth it.

I just read they had a funeral procession for Ozzy in Birmingham with a brass band playing Iron Man. How cool is that! I saw Ryne Sandberg play against the Pirates back in the day. He was great, not flashy, but always played hard. Baseball needs more like him, then I might be interested again.

Bob Nutting being launched to one of Neptune’s moons would help, too.
