Bryce Harper, Phillies agree to record-breaking $330 million free agent deal (CBSSports.com)

Harper, 26, authored a .249/.393/.496 (133 OPS+) batting line with 34 home runs and an MLB best 130 walks last season. Sketchy defense dragged his overall production down to 1.3 WAR, though the poor defensive ratings are an outlier compared to the rest of his career. He consistently rated as an average or better defender prior to 2018.

Average or better.  LMFAO.

Mark my words, this deal will come back to haunt the Phillies.  Maybe not next year.  Maybe not three years from now.

But according to what I’m seeing, this is a 13 year deal, with no opt outs.

It will come back to haunt them.

At that point they’ll try to deal him because the AAV is only $25M+ per, and I think they said by the end of the contract due to inflation it would be worth $17M per. Throw in a little money and in 2029 Harper could be playing for, I don’t know, the Honolulu A’s?
