Request Line: Stripped Down

INT. RECORDING STUDIO – DAY

The PRODUCER and DJ 3000 stand outside the recording studio, gazing into the booth.

PRODUCER: Wow.

DJ 3000: I KNOW, RIGHT?

PRODUCER: I mean, I’m not…

DJ 3000: OH, ME NEITHER.

PRODUCER: But if I was….

DJ 3000: OH, YEAH.

CRISTIANO RONALDO: Você está pronto para o rock?

PRODUCER: [punches talkback button] Oh, you know we are.

DJ 3000: WE WERE BOOTED UP READY.

CRISTIANO RONALDO: Eu disse, você está pronto para o rock?

PRODUCER: Did you not hear us the first time? We’re absolutely ready.

DJ 3000: MAYBE THERE IS A LANGUAGE BARRIER ISSUE?

RONALDO: Então, como isso funciona?

PRODUCER: You know what? I’ll handle that side of things. You just…do your thing.  [punches button] Hey folks, welcome to Request Line.  We’ve got Cristiano Ronaldo here to help us out. Today’s topic is…[glances at a shirtless Ronaldo]…”stripped down”.  We’re looking for your favorite acoustic versions of songs.  I’ll get us started with…

He is interrupted by the flashing light of an incoming phone call.

RIKKI-TIKKI-DEADLY: Hey.

PRODUCER: Um…hi.

RTD: So, uh, I know this is kind of unorthodox…

We follow the PRODUCER’s gaze as he looks at each of the walls in the room, finally settling on a crack in the fourth one he looks at.

RTD: …but I had this breakup a long time ago and this song really helped me…well, not necessarily get through it…

PRODUCER: Feel better?

RTD: …no, not that either.  Um.  I guess it was just fitting for the situation.  It’s the acoustic version of “Mercy” by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club from the Howl Sessions.  Can you give it a spin for me?

RONALDO: Sim!

Editor’s Note: Today’s theme is “stripped down” – acoustic versions of songs you like.  In order to have videos appear in comments, you don’t have to mess around with embed codes or anything, just post plain links as such: “https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meSSiRul3Z”.  When you hit refresh it should show up as embedded and you can rock out at your leisure. This topic might be a little too rich, so let’s limit things to five picks per person – make them good ones!

5. It took me a while to get into Tom Morello doing mostly acoustic stuff, but this song is catchy as fuck

4. I’m mostly using this one so that I don’t feel obligated to use it when we get to a Covers Request Line, but it also fits well.

I realize I’m breaking the rules here because this is my 6th post. But I had forgotten about this one. The original is acoustic as it is, but this cover is pretty cool and I’m compelled to share it.

It’s not purely acoustic.

Where’s that edit button?

Alas, it doesn’t look like anyone has a full version of Starsailor’s Way To Fall anywhere. The haunting and shockingly fitting end theme to Metal Gear Solid 3 was actually a complete mistake caused when Hideo Kojima misheard someone who was telling him to use something from Stellastarr, the indie rock band from Brooklyn.

Toh Kay is Tomas Kalnoky, former front man of Catch 22 and Streetlight Manifesto, and most of the songs released under that name are acoustic versions of their old ska songs and are catch as shit.

I actually heard Toh Kay before I heard Streetlight Manifesto. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was from a ska band and found myself trapped back in my middle school days when skanking was still a thing.

Low Commander of the Super Soldiers

I’m seeing Streetlight Manifesto at the end of the month. They’re doing their entire first album front to back and I’m very excited about it.
