I’m watching Rocky IV which I haven’t seen probably since it came out. It really is extraordinarily good filmmaking. It’s an action movie and a basic morality tale, that’s what it is. My favorite character is Ivan Drago’s girlfriend.

There was a discussion earlier about this shitty fucking fire season and these shitty fucking Santa Ana’s and it turns out Raymond Chandler said it best close to a century ago.

Weird. When I lived in Redlands over 40 years ago, I loved the Santa Anas, because I could finally see the top of San Gorgonio.

I visited the Verdun battlefield about 15 years ago. It was a crappy rainy day, I was by myself in a rental car. I visited the museum, and went to Fort Douaumont. I then went to the cemetery/ossuary. I didn’t even know what an ossuary was at the time.
I looked through the windows of the ossuary and saw that the place was full of bones. I initially thought I was looking at bones that were being catalogued for identification/research. As I walked along the walls of the building, I realized that this was just a mass grave. I grew short of breath, had to sit down, and could not stop tears for some time. Even if all the dead were assholes (and being mostly German and French, many of them no doubt were), no one deserved this kind of anonymous slaughter.
Building is 450 feet long and contains the unidentified skeletal remains of around 130,000 soldiers.
A very sobering experience which I have no desire to repeat.
