I know we are all doing our best – or what qualifies as “we”, or “doing”, or “best” – under these trying circumstances. But what have you put your time towards? Hopefully not learning some second- or third language like some smarty-pants!
Like many people, I have taken to cooking experimentation. Now, as an avowed fan of the Sunday Gravy, there are many recipes I have tried & successfully mimicked.
So this week, I decided to go into my own arsenal, and – without posting my own recipes, because I am not stepping on toes – I like to think I did a pretty good job at making WineWife happy she continues to stay married to me.
On Monday, I made deep dish, using a cast-iron skillet.
The recipe for dough is pretty straightforward – flour, yeast, salt, sugar; the key is what you do to if afterwards. I chose to add Umami seasoning to the dough base, to give it some added flavour. Toppings were whatever I could find in the fridge. The verdict was “delicious”, and what I learned was where to cut down on dough production so I could have enough for calzones the next day.
Thursday night, I took a frozen pork loin & a half-pack of unused bacon & turned that into a wrapped pork loin.
This was even simpler – the only real addition was the honey-mustard glaze I needed to make to use as glue to affix the bacon to the loin, beyond the effect the skewers had. It tasted as good that night as it did a couple of days later when we reheated the rest for leftovers.
So let me know what you’ve been up to. I think we can all agree that yeah right‘s been the boss with all of the good food ideas, and that thick sauce is better than runny, but to get ready for tomorrow’s showcase let’s talk about what we’ve each done during this nonsense to keep from dropping the weight.
Tonight’s … entertainment?:
- Super Bowl LIV: San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs – 8:00 PM | FOX
- A two-hour replay of both the game & halftime show.
- The Great British Baking Show – 8:00 PM | PBS
- The remaining bakers make “saucy puds” (delicate cakes with a gooey filling or saucy surprise); tiramisu; and baked Alaska.
- Speaking of prep for “Sunday Gravy”…
- 30 for 30 – 8:00 PM | ESPN2
- A repeat of the repeat about the antagonists from Episodes 3 & 4 of “The Last Dance”.
- The distinctive late-’80s Detroit Pistons squad under Chuck Daly is chronicled, featuring core players Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, Rick Mahorn, Joe Dumars and John Salley, as well as top rivals of the era.
- Classic boxing – TSN
- 10:30 PM: De La Hoya vs. Chavez
- 11:30 PM: De La Hoya vs. Trinidad
Not a lot going on, so please do entertain yourselves talking about food before we all go to school tomorrow.
I love this song so much because you have to listen to the lyrics to understand what the acronym means.

Well that’s awful. I followed up on Annie and found that she has fibromyalgia, and that she had a son that died after 17 days from SIDS, and that the father of that son died less than a year later from a drug overdose. His name was Robert Paulson.
I am not making any of that up.
Okay, tomorrow is officially “get your shit together day”.
There’s always next week just in case.

Driving through Wyoming at night on gas fumes with this playing was the eeriest experience of my life so far.
Spoiler: I survived.
People can dog on Jim Morrison all they want; The Doors still made some pretty great music.
This guy gets it.
Actually I’m already on this program.
Greatest PSA ever.
KITTEH!!1!@!1#@2!!
This movie was a lot better than most people gave it credit for. It wasn’t nearly good as *I* gave it credit for.

Not from this song, but “like a trash can fire, in a prison cell” is one of the greatest lyrical lines ever penned.
Drinking vodka out of the freezer. It’s gonna be one of those nights. But presumably the last of one of those nights for a while, so I’d better make the most of it.
Welcome to the club!

I have probably seen this band (this guy?) play more than any other musician. I guess that makes them (him) my favorite? One time he politely declined to write music for a project I was working on.
I’ve been reading about the Florida Panther. They had almost no genetic diversity and were down to under 30 panthers when they had to introduce Texas pumas to reinvigorate the species. It probably wouldn’t have happened if they weren’t the Florida state animal, voted in by schoolkids
Native species and habitat be fucked just about everywhere. This is a good example of one that is gone.
It’s safer on the outside.

Sorry…not sorry
Adrienne promised me a better credit!
Well, my erect penis has kept many women away. Not sure they were all evil.
Weird how something so small can be such a repellent.
HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
I now have the coolest webcam set-up in the world.
Prove it
Without nudes please.
gimme a sec and i will
That’s the image I can put on Zoom for work now. The taking lens is a 1943 Kodak Aero-Ektar 7″/f2.5 barrel lens, built for U.S. bombers in WWII for aerial photos. It’s mounted on a 1951 Speed Graphic Pacemaker. Behind that, a Canon 5DMKII DSLR is viewing the ground glass with a 28mm/f1.8 prime lens. The Canon is rigged as a virtual camera into my Mac via USB and can be ported to Zoom and Google Groups and all that other shit in use today. I’ve been using the Canon alone for a month now but I stuck the Speed Graphic in front of it.
Neat
Depth-of-field of the Aero-Ektar wide open at this distance is about three inches. The bokeh is fantastic (those are little xmas tree lights about three feet behind me there).
You’re quite handsome out of focus.
If I stopped drinking now and went to bed, there is a huge mess in the kitchen that would not be dealt with. Guess I’ve got no choice.

Is the choice to drink more and not deal with the huge mess in the kitchen?
Yeah, I can’t leave that shit unattended.
Oh shit. I still need to make dinner.
And drink more.
Okay, 1 out of 2 ain’t bad.

The unspoken law is the person who didn’t cook cleans?
Yeah but I also cooked unless you count the baked potatoes.
Though cooking was predominantly grilling. And it’s not like the “cooking” part of fondue was tough. Though I *did* grow the spinach quite literally from scratch.
So….if you leave it till tomorrow morning, what happens?
Didn’t you see the cockroach movie down below?
I have to stop drinking and go to bed! Not a viable option.
That doesn’t seem like an and
