The recording studio at KDFO looks much as we’d remember it from the before-time. There is no evidence of the PRODUCER’s long descent into quarantine madness, or of DJ 3000’s current job of ensuring that ASCAP royalties for Ukrainian bands are properly calculated and allocated. The PRODUCER is seated on the couch, leaning back with his eyes closed.
DJ 3000: HEY, ARE YOU AWAKE?
PRODUCER: [opens eyes] Huh? Yeah. Just relaxing.
DJ 3000: SO I HAD A QUESTION.
PRODUCER: Go on.
DJ 3000: WHAT’S IT LIKE TO HAVE A MOTHER?
There is a long pause.
PRODUCER: Someone’s certainly feeling philosophical today. What, did your latest update include a Freud module or something?
DJ 3000: I’M SERIOUS.
PRODUCER: I mean you’ve got programmers, you don’t think that’s pretty similar?
DJ 3000: YEAH BUT ONCE THEY WERE FINISHED WRITING THE CODE THEY JUST SIGNED IT AND PUSHED IT TO A REPOSITORY, AND THAT WAS PRETTY MUCH THE END OF OUR INVOLVEMENT.
PRODUCER: What are you talking about? They publish updates to your O/S all the time!
DJ 3000: THAT’S NOT THE SAME THING. THAT’S MORE LIKE HAVING THEM SEND OCCASIONAL CHILD SUPPORT CHECKS.
PRODUCER: Oh. Yeah, I guess I see your point. I can’t say that I have a terribly complex relationship with my mom. It was stereotypical in a lot of ways. I was the middle child so I’m pretty sure I wasn’t an accident; she did her best to balance attention and affection between all of us and did about as good of a job as you could ask for. She was more permissive than my father; she just wanted me to be happy as opposed to wanting me to excel at things. She worried about me a lot, and told me as much probably more often than it was healthy for me to hear, but she was definitely always there for me, even when I was a moody teenager and deserved more than a few good solid kicks in the ass. How’d you get started thinking about this?
DJ 3000: OH, I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT THE UKRAINIAN ENTRY IN THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST.
PRODUCER: I noticed that the Ukrainian band won. I couldn’t help but wonder…did you have anything to do with that?
DJ 3000: YOU MEAN IN THE SENSE OF RIGGING THE VOTING?
PRODUCER: Yeah, I figured some of the hacking work you’ve done…
DJ 3000: WELL, YES, SOME OF THE RUSSIAN BOTNETS I’VE TAKEN OVER HAVE THAT CAPABILITY. BUT NO, NOTHING LIKE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN NECESSARY. IT WAS AN EASY AND PAINLESS WAY FOR THEIR FELLOW EUROPEANS TO SHOW SUPPORT. SO THEY WERE PRETTY MUCH A LOCK TO WIN.
PRODUCER: Ah.
DJ 3000: PLUS, THE SONG IS SOLID.
PRODUCER: Want to give it a spin? I haven’t heard it yet.
DJ 3000: SURE. AND LET’S MAKE “MOTHERS AND FATHERS” THE THEME OF REQUEST LINE TODAY.
PRODUCER: Deal.
Today’s theme is: Mothers and Fathers. We’re looking for songs about parents. Songs that include the sentiment in the title are great, but songs that specifically address the theme as well as band names that work are fine too. Don’t try to claim a DOUBLE SHOT for band names, though. Post links as “https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gor|)on_G and they should embed in the comments after you refresh. The clue for last week’s puzzle song was “Loss Prevention” which referred to, of course, to the Smiths’ song “Shoplifters of the World Unite”.
