Hatingly hating the hater hater’s hate: A Tuesday Open thread

Apologies for the lateness of this thread, some idiot decided to drive into some other people’s cars on the highway.  While they did generate many negative feelings among the thousands of people stuck in the resulting traffic, which is totally on-brand for Hate Week, it did delay this post.

While I will always and forever hate the Cowboys, even after the NFL collapses and football is played exclusively by cybernetically-enhanced shark/gorilla genetic monsters, this post is not about that.  It is about another, more pervasive and successful force at work in the NFL and the country at large.  I speak of NEPOTISM.  How many coaching families can you think of just off the top of your head?

In the Owl last year we had Sean McVay.  His grandfather coached for the Giants and later worked for the 49rs.  Belichick’s dad coached for the Lions in the 40s, and his son was Safeties coach.The two head coaches in the Owl this year? Kyle Shanahan, son of noted tanning-bed enthusiast Mike Shanahan, and Andy Reid who actually appears to have no relatives that I can find who previously coached football, but did meet his wife at a Fundamentals of Tennis class, which may or may not say something.

The main reason this blows is that it prevents other people from entering coaching, primarily former players.  So it’s basically another screw you from the NFL to the players, and it’s a big reason there’s not more minority representation in the coaching ranks.  The Rooney rule just means you gotta talk to a minority candidate, but that doesn’t mean much when you’ve already decided to hire Scott Turner because Norv put in a word.  It also stifles innovation in coaching, the Air Raid offense was pioneered by Hal Mumme, and he wasn’t hired by his uncle, he slogged through tons of shitty coaching jobs before being able to implement something SUPER FUN TO WATCH!

And then outside the NFL we got that whole politics thing going on, so there’s some bonus hate for y’all.
