Ladies and GENTLEMEN, I am former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and it’s my great honor as your GUEST DEEJAY to welcome you to the Door Flies Open Request Line. Tonight’s show is DEEP CUTS WITH RAY LEWIS. One of the many things God blessed me with here on this earth is a love of MUSIC. In particular, I have an abiding love for unappreciated album tracks and B-sides. It takes heart – I tell you this – it takes heart like you wouldn’t believe for a song to be able to sit tight in the background, and STAY OUT OF THE SPOTLIGHT. Being able to FLY UNDER THE RADAR is a great quality in a song and something that me and my friends REALLY APPRECIATE. This week we’ll be playing songs that are so understated that MOST PEOPLE DON’T EVEN KNOW THEY WERE PRESENT IN THE FIRST PLACE and THEY’RE HAPPY TO KEEP IT THAT WAY.
To get you folks started on this week’s edition of Request Line, I’m going to share a favorite track of mine from the 1984 Violent Femmes album Hallowed Ground. Most people are familiar with the Femmes for their EPONYMOUS DEBUT ALBUM and have probably heard one of the other MINOR HITS THAT GOD SAW FIT TO BESTOW UPON THEM, like their cover of T-Rex’s “Children of the Revolution” or “American Music” off of Why Do Birds Sing. Now, a lot of people feel that the Femmes’ other albums are trash. That they should be DISCARDED IN A GARBAGE DUMPSTER BEHIND A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT. But those people are blind. I tell you that – BLIND. They are missing out on some HIDDEN GEMS. Now let me tell you that I really dig Hallowed Ground because a lot of the songs are about FAITH. In particular, this next track is about how it’s important to be able to HAVE FAITH that someone is NEVER GOING TO TELL anyone what happened or what they saw, WHICH WAS NOTHING, and certainly NOTHING THAT CONCERNED THEM.
Thank you for tuning in tonight, folks, and GOD BLESS. Make your own submissions in the comments and I’LL BE HAPPY TO GIVE THEM A SPIN FOR YOU!
[…] first edition of Request Line was all the way back on August 14, 2015 – Deep Cuts with Ray Lewis. Since then we’ve covered 155 topics, including Guns, Electricity, Money, Cities, Names, and […]
nice
I like a lot of Trent Reznor’s instrumental numbers, and even though a lot of his later albums didn’t fully land like the earlier ones did, I really like the couple he had on The Slip.

I heard “Me So Horny” on the radio a while ago. Why did the clean version even exist? It’s practically a Kidsongs cover.
That was for Rikkis comment below, btw.

That banner pic – it’s like he’s stabbing my soul!
He’s just giving you a stern reminder that to bear false witness is a sin, and that describing things you *think* you saw when hadn’t had your contact lens prescription updated in several months and you’d been drinking and plus it was dark definitely counts as FALSE WITNESS.

John Stainer is the best rock drummer I’ve ever heard. Helmet was so good after their first album, and it kills me that Paige Hamilton “resurrected” them after they broke up, with him as the only returning member. THERE IS NO HELMET WITHOUT JOHN, YOU MONSTER!

Danny Carey would like a word with you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=245-thqPI3I
I don’t know why I read that as “Drew Carey” at first…
He’s great, but uses double bass drums. DISQUALIFIED!
Agreed; Drew Carey is not a talented drummer.
Helmet was a pretty good live show. I saw them with Faith No More about…Jesus H. Christ, 20 years ago.
Pass the prune juice.
Before everyone learned who 311 was thanks to the self-titled album, they were actually pretty awesome:

That WAS a good album, and this could totally be the Sex Cannon’s anthem (he’ll be hosting his own edition of Request line soon enough). “This one goes to all the birds that drowned…”
Man…I’m listening to the “clean” version of this album (it’s the only one available on Spotify) and all the edits to mix out the swears are unbearable.
Dennis Reynolds is correct. Steve Winwood is the shit.
Lionize has quickly become one of my favorite bands. Starting as very Reggae heavy, they’ve gone more towards Rock but keep a lot of those influences.

“Hell is other people…” except for you guys, of course!
Lionize was a decent Eagles song.
Hate the Eagles, but +1 for the pun.
