Hey! Here’s a light, frothy question for a Saturday night. And I’m asking because I feel my emotions being manipulated and am unsure of some basic facts. How bad is the illegal immigration/asylum seeker problem along our border with Mexico? And what would be the broad strokes towards a common sense solution going forward, irrespective of any political leaning? Seems we had people streaming into our northeastern borders at other times in our history, and there was a system in place then. Personally, I want anyone who wishes to live here to be given that opportunity. Let’s get your kiddos in school. Let’s get you working, but on the books. We need more tax base. Let’s diversify the populations of our communities and schools. Let’s be bilingual (at least).
I feel like this may be the key issue of the midterm elections (especially if there’s going to be photos of despondent children living in makeshift concentration camps), and it’s so mired in partisan horseshit, I feel the need to understand it at its root.
I’m angry that these children are being taken from their parents. I’m terrified that apparently no one seems to know where any of the female children or infants are. I’m angry that the care workers ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH THE CHILDREN, who are experiencing toxic stress syndrome from the anxiety they’re suffering. I’m angry that the people responsible for this are using these children as living bargaining chips in order to fulfill an absurd campaign promise that does nothing but serve the unquenchable ego of a narcissistic maniac. And I’m angry that no matter how hard I try to escape the truth, the reality of the situation is, regardless of who I voted for, I am an American and this is a representative democracy. Therefore, all of this is being done in my name.

Yup, it would be great if the issue were how do we fix our broken immigration system rather than the party in power is good with demonizing brown people and the party out of power is painted as being for open borders when they’re for the very orderly system improvements you’re calling for. All I know is that what we’re doing now is unfuckingconscionable, and it’s pretty clear the modern day know nothing party isn’t going to fix it.

Just an anecdote; I grew up in a rural area that was primarily agricultural economically speaking. A similar group got elected and the INS (at the time) cracked down and got rid of any undocumented migrant workers. The politicians used the justification that we should do what we did in the past and have high school kids work for farming families and harvest the crops. Well, HS kids didn’t want to work in the hot sun for twelve hours doing back breaking work for low wages. The crops rotted in the fields and most farms lost a lot of money, several went bankrupt. This was fifty years ago. We have certainly gotten worse on a larger scale.

It is the politics of rich or wealthy people telling people who’s wages have stagnated in real value for the last 40 years while corporate profits and individual wealth for the top 5% has skyrocketed that the people causing this stagnation are brown, poor, desperate people who speak broken English are the root of the problem.

Immigrants benefit the economy; it’s just fact. Even illegal ones do (benefit corporation anyway). It will never happen, but a sound work VISA program, combined with a crackdown on firms that employ those entering the country illegally, worker protections for migrant or temporary workers, reform of the laws that punish those who are actually more beneficial, etc., etc.
