In AFL news, the St. Kilda Saints beat the Carlton Blues earlier this morning at Marvel Stadium by 17 points. Also, this weekend’s excellent matchup between the GWS Giants and the Hawthorn Hawks will be televised LIVE and IN COLOUR on ESPN 2 Saturday night/Sunday morning at 1 AM Pacific.

Today is the start of the 4th of July Holiday weekend here in the States. Most people will get a long weekend out of the deal as July 4th falls on a Saturday. Many people are taking Monday off too, making it an even longer weekend.
Here in LA, fireworks shows are being cancelled, the beaches are closed, bars have been closed too, and more restrictions have been put into place. I suppose people can drive to Vegas, but that’s just lunacy with the spikes in cases throughout the Southwest.
As you know, though, dumbasses gonna dumbass.
I myself will take advantage of the time and get some much-needed rest. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve found that I’m working more from home than I used to at the office. It’s hard to “switch off”. This weekend will be the perfect opportunity to do just that.

I was very bored today and checked out a commentless deadspin, which has basically become a sports adjacent version of the Root.
That’s not my point though, I went to deadspins Twitter out of morbid curiosity and on almost every post someone inevitably posts “scab” and I think that’s a load of shit.
I’m a unionized worker. We have clear language in the contract of what can and can’t fly. That doesn’t mean management won’t try to pull shit because they have different priories than we do. I know Gawker was bought out by a hedge fund and they then tried to pull some shit, which if you saw the last two years of deadspin they had a point in what they wanted to change.
So you resigned thinking they would miss you. That’s risky but hey it’s an option! They didn’t, and honestly neither did I. You thought you were the teamsters but you were the umpires in 1999. Who knew finding people who could repackage other people’s news in a cunty, condescending way was actually pretty easy?
You had your union (which honestly you only started after you published a story about Vice’s terrible salaries and Vice then found out Denton paid you guys even less than they did) and you let your management walk all over you. Too bad.
I get some of theirTwitter stuff. There are a few of them who appear to be experiencing a nervous breakdown.
You seriously can’t blame a young writer trying to find their voice. It doesn’t matter the platform.
It matters if people read. If their work is good it should transcend.

What bugged me the most was they had the union protection and didn’t want to do the legwork to maintain it. Do I like threatening grievances and having to yell at a manager because in some cases it’s the only way they’ll stop busting your balls or doing something that’s against the contract? No, I hate it because I’m not that person at my core, but as long as management tries to do unethical things to meet productivity then it needs to be done on occasion.
Agreed. The biggest problem that unions have is members that don’t use them correctly.
I always tell people read the goddamn contract. It’s not a spiral bound paperweight they send you out of the goodness of their hearts, it can save your ass.
Is something fucked up going on? You can ask for a shop steward immediately and they have to oblige your request.
It’s a battle between ignorance and apathy and I honestly think apathy is winning at least at my work.

Sound mixing is a category I never understood at the Oscars, but it sucks on this movie on HBO right now

Apocalypse Now was mentioned earlier, which has some of the most amazing cinematography ever. Yet the post-production took just as long as the famously long principal photography. The entire soundtrack is a complex and detailed build, evoking the entire universe of the film. Only synch-sound dialogue close-ups (and all of Brando) were recorded on set and used in the final mix; everything else was re-recorded in post.

Did anyone watch the Colin Farrell version of Total Recall?
It was on AMC a while ago and I could only handle five minutes…
I watched the whole thing. I am very forgiving with most scifi. It was very forgettable for sure….. they didn’t try very hard, but spent a lot of money making it.
The look of it was off to me. The cinematography and mood of the original film was so good. Maybe I shouldn’t have been comparing it, but I couldn’t help it.
I viewed the original as campy comedy, unintentionally in large part, but enjoyed it nonetheless. The new one was so meh, it didn’t last at all. Well, except for the three titted mutant, which was fantastic in both films.
I’ve been watching movie fight scenes. What year is it?
