Talk about wildly over/under-performing expectations.  The Pac-12 has been on fire, whilst the B1G has been a dumpster fire.  This is a pretty tough ask of Quack Attack, though.

8W Oklahoma (+14) v. 1W Gonzaga (2:40, CBS)

Media-beloved Zags easily covered a 33.5-point spread in Round 1.  That should make me gunshy about saying this 14-point chasm is way too much, but I’m not the kind of fella who learns from his mistakes.

14E Abilene Christian (+4.5) v. 11E UCLA (5:15, TBS)

This has been quite the dance for the religiously-inclined.  Unless you’re a Stormin’ Mormon.  I wonder if UCLA even packed their home uniforms?

13W Ohio (+5.5) v. 5W Creighton (6:10, TNT)

They made it past the 5/12 landmine, but Creigh-Creigh is super perimeter-oriented, and such sides are always prone to being upset.  Is it really a Bananacakes Torneo without some MAC-tion in the Sweet 16?

Anything announced by Curt Gowdy takes me back to when men were men and shorts were short. Second best NC State tourney run after the the 83 Jimmy V team IMHO, but I’ll defer to you real Wolven fans. Anyway, I always loved hoops and I was about 7 years old when this game was played. Could have been this game or earlier in UCLA’s run, but I remember watching a game with grandpa and my dad. My gramps lettered in baseball and track at Purdue and knew John Wooden, and so always had a soft spot for UCLA . My dad thought Walton was amazingly agile for a big man and pointed out to me then that Walton’s vertical jump would clear my head without him even bending his knees. I was just happy they allowed me to sip or two from their Stroh’s when the womenfolk were out of the TV room. Anyway, I am obviously a hell of a lot older now, but only slightly taller — at this point Bill is not agile enough to jump me even if he could bend his knees! I have Cal season tickets and went up to him and shook his hand at a game he was announcing in the pre-pandemic times. He was good natured about it so not all pro sportsball players turn into assholes.

I am certain I watched this game live on NBC, but I was like 9 months old, so memory is hazy!

Bill Walton, David Thompson, and Lenny Elmore were all freaks of nature. 1974 was a special time in college hoopsball.

We are hard-wired for patterns, and Round of 32 in non-#NuAIDS years has always been Saturday/Sunday.

The Sweet 16 and Elite 8 are off by TWO WHOLE DAYS, so expect enhanced dementia feels this coming weekend.

This is very much the least amount of hoopsball I have ever watched in a season. I only watched about half of NC State’s games, even. Maybe 2-3 hrs (pre-NCAAT) of non-Shitty Wolves play, total.
