Sharkbait’s Cocktail of the Week: Midnight Bourbon To Show

Happy Kentucky Derby weekend everyone. Since it is derby weekend, I found it fitting to make a drink simply called The Derby from Vintage Spirit & Forgotten Cocktails. As with most derby related drinks, this one has a bourbon base which I am all about. The interesting ingredient here is the orange curacao. I wonder how the orange flavors will play with the sweet vermouth and the bourbon.

Speaking of the orange, I did have to substitute orange juice for the curacao in this. Initially I was hesitant to make the substitution, but I figured I would give it a shot, and add a little more bourbon to compensate for the missing alcohol in the curacao. The derby is all about gambling right? Why not take a risk here?

The Derby

1 oz. Bourbon

.5 oz. Sweet vermouth

.5 oz. Orange curacao

.75 oz. Fresh lime juice

Shake in an iced cocktail shaker and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a mint leaf (optional)

The nose has a slight orange-y aroma. I suspect that is mostly because of the orange juice I had to sub in. I also get a little bit of the bourbon smell coming through as well. I will say the combination of the bourbon and orange is nice to be honest.

The sip starts off with a little hit of the orange juice. That flavor does not last very long, as it is immediately mixed with the whiskey notes, with a slight hit of vermouth undertones in there as well. Those three flavors meld together and constitute the remainder of the sip. The lime juice seems to be lost. I believe the orange juice is at fault for that. The finish is nice, however the orange juice lingers on the palate for a few seconds, leaving a bit of an acidic aftertaste once you’re finished. The sip is very well balanced and no flavor truly dominates or overshadows anything else.

Overall, I would say this is a pretty good attempt at this, given the major substitution of orange juice for the curacao. I think it plays, especially since I added an extra half ounce of bourbon in here. The one complaint I have is the orange juice introduced too much acid into the equation here. Not enough to ruin the overall drink, but enough where it is noticeable, as mentioned above with the ending. This is definitely on the short list to make properly, once I get more curacao. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to finish deciding on which horses I want in my $1 trifecta box…

25 hours in since 2nd Pfizer jab. Sore arm and maybe a little achy overall, but I’m gonna pretend it hit me hard and take the day off. Edibles time!

Dunstan

Between the lesser footy coverage and this referring to “jabs,” I’m expecting DFO to hoist the Union Jack and secede from the EU any second now.

I got mine this morning. My arm isn’t sore, which seems ominous. Here’s your house!

I forgot that tomorrow’s the Derby, maybe because the first Saturday in May is also the 1st.

I’d say wake me in time for the Belmont (which I’d like to go to at some point), but I also don’t want to deal with the construction across the street (the Ice Jets new arena that they wouldn’t have needed if they just did the Coliseum right in the first place, but that’s Nassau County bullshit for you).

Being that it’s May Day, I think they should play the Internationale instead of the Star Spangled Banner during the opening ceremonies. I mean, the commies are running this country now, right?comment image

More importantly, it’s almost May The Fourth, a day of celebration inside my office.

I just ordered a new Scentsy warmer for my office. This one projects (as seen in the pic) a certain princess’s outline from a blue light in the back of the warmer. R2’s head comes off, but the back of the droid’s head is open to allow the scent out.

Because I am forcing my likes upon you all, here is a link.

The Child Scentsy warmer is the one currently in my office. The Mandalorian scent isn’t bad at all, so that was a real plus. I have that plush The Child in my office, too (actually, 2 of them, one is still in the box in my car).

The Falcon warmer looks cool on the side, but I don’t like the top design.

Vader one is the next one I want. Those lights on the chest plate actually light up, and that’s enough for me to waste money.

Those are kinda cool… However – “The Mandalorian scent isn’t bad at all”
Well that’s not very realistic. After running around on Tatooine in that armor I would think the Mandalorian’s scent would peel paint.

TheRevanchist

Yes, but “ass sweat” as a scent isn’t going to sell. That would be for a more specialized German audience.

The thought reminds me of the Vader / Palpatine phone call sketch on Robot Chicken: “Wait a sec, you’ve been flying around for two weeks trying to get a signal? Oh, you must smell like…feet wrapped in…leathery…burnt…bacon”

Just heard about Najee Harris having his draft party at the homeless shelter that helped his family out when he was a kid.
I suppose I could make some smart assed comment about this, but I gotta say that’s pretty damn cool..

Damn. That is cool. He may make me care about this team again…
