Oh hey, it’s 11:39 pm on a Sunday night and I just remembered I need to have one of these up and running tomorrow. I took tomorrow off so I could help a friend saw holes in our ceiling and put in an attic entryway that won’t cause kill or maim anyone trying to pull the ladder down, because that is decidedly not the case with the ladder we put in 20+ years ago. Also it’s my birthday and no one should work on their birthday. You all owe me a gift.
So based on the open thread we’re currently in, (authored by the estimable Don T), I was reminded that a topic I’d been hoarding, comedy films, was till available. Rikki’s going on about comedy/sci-fi films, which would be an excellent topic if it didn’t run out at about 10 picks, so we’re just going to do comedy films.
Anyway, to qualify the film has to be an intentional comedy. ‘Sophie’s Choice’ doesn’t count; seriously, anyone who’s had more than one kid knows there’s an easy choice to be made. Don’t kid yourself otherwise.
With the first pick, and keeping with tradition, I will take ‘Kelly’s Heroes’, which qualifies as a war film, a heist film, and a comedy, because parts of it are very funny. Also it means Sharkbait can’t draft it, which is half the fun.
There will be no commissioner. Frankly we’ll be lucky if I roll in much before noon.
The rest of you are on the clock.
Los Caballeros De La Cama Redonda
Next pick:
Waiting
Next pick:
Clerks:
Can’t believe none of the Friday movies are here. My pick is Friday After Next:
So I Married An Axe Murderer
Sheeeeit, great pick
Very strong honorable mention/massive oversight:
Tropic Thunder
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwkCXz_Kohs
The Man with Two Brains.
I tried to post this earlier but wasn’t able to. Abbot & Costello Meet the Mummy. My brother and I used to watch these every Sunday. pretty sure it was the only way we’d behave in church.
I remember watching Bullwinkle when I got home from mass. Ma and Pa Kettle movies too, when it wasn’t football season.
Happy Gilmour
Ok, I’m closing it out with my favorite Eddie Murphy film, The Distinguished Gentleman.
And I want to compile a list of all of today’s picks to make it a freaking to watch list.

Bridesmaids
Spies Like Us was funny and had Donna Dixon
It also had Vanessa Angel. Which I’m sure is not a name that was changed for purposes of stage and screen.

Not a full length feature, so not an official pick, but if you haven’t seen the Beasties’ Fight For Your Right Revisited – highly rec’d.
(Even if you don’t particularly care for their music, still worth it for the gags as well as the cameos)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evA-R9OS-Vo
5 – I’m Gonna Git You Sucka .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgHcYxKjwVE
I’ll take Booksmart, not just Lady Superbad, it makes me laugh out loud every time I rewatch it (especially the graduation scene).
https://youtu.be/tX2MvB0kyA0
That was a delightful film. In particular the pizza guy stickup scene.
4. South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
5th: The Jerk
Now that’s great value
Yesssssss!
Going with a bit of a sleeper for my last pick: Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Not the most popular film, but I always loved it.
?w=768&h=602
4 – the best of the horny teenager genre, Superbad.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qqN21WfQOI
M*A*S*H
Final pick for me, and I found that the Army was not exactly like my childhood impressions. I was expecting more pretty nurses.
The Aristocrats! (If you haven’t seen it, highly rec’d)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxGD0rk547Y
History of the World Part 1, with the delightful Madeleine Kahn
Old School is still on the board? This scene had me choking with laughter the first time I saw it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFW-yxe13lo&ab_channel=Movieclips
I am going off my draft board to go with the other musical movie I will rewatch whenever I stumble across it, That Thing You Do!
The whole movie is genius but Steve Zahn is masterful.

Undercover Brother
Very underrated. The part where both sides stop fighting, take a seat and bring out the popcorn as the chicks fight in the shower cracks my silly schoolboy butt up.
4. Dragnet ( the Aykroyd/Hanks version)
The Virgin Connie Swail, so good
“Milk. Just like the sign said on the building before you obliterated it. ‘Fresh, wholesome milk.'”
3 – Raising Arizona
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCYtC1p6xbo
Here’s a comedy: We ripped the old attic stairs out and then Mrs. Horatio discovered that we could fit a slightly wider new staircase in there so it’s off to Home Depot to return the old one and get a new one and there’s a hole in the ceiling where the vermiculite insulation can fall down from and it’ll be there all day.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
According to Mel Brooks, that is the essence of comedy:
“Tragedy is when I get a hangnail. Comedy is when someone else falls into an open sewer and dies.”
2) Hot Fuzz is off the board, but Shaun of the Dead is no slouch
Top Secret! (sooooo many sight gags)
Third and final pick. Reefer Madness!
Truly a laugh riot.
A Day at the Races.
As a kid they were still showing the old Marx Brothers movies. I enjoyed them a lot.
Slightly different from the rest of my picks, taking School of Rock. Heartwarming, funny, songs pop into your head randomly.
https://youtu.be/IU1U8n5s7wI
Just beat me to it.
Speaking of, it’s more likely a UDFA acquisition down the road, but the Rocker was sneaky good and when they sped this song up, it fucking worked.
https://youtu.be/LFzIw1WCSYg
3. Revanchist took International Man of Mystery, but left the best movie of the trilogy on the table.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Jay N’ Silent Bob Strike Back
Seriously, do we have the same sense of humor?
IE: Filthy and puerile? Yeah, kinda sounds like it…
Tallying up:
1. Ghostbusters
2. The Naked Gun
3. Office Space
4. Army of Darkness
5. Beavis and Butt-head Do America
6. Borat
7. Risky Business
Good squad. Probably wouldn’t have hurt to have an older veteran on the team, but I think it’s a solid B+ draft.
I could do this draft forever. Thinking about at least going to ten picks.
Yeah there were a lot of things left on the table, and I had to make some pretty hard calls to keep my roster from getting out of control.
I’m picking again, because I got here late and it’s Horatio’s birthday.
Happy Birthday Horatio!
Got here late, but Beerfest is still available
7. Closing things out with a sex comedy: Risky Business.
The Hangover
I know… more like a documentary
Pretty sure I already had the rights when I woke up this morning.
Night Shift.
Great pick.
Awesome song, too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG37S8C9lyw
Happy Birthday Horatio! My first pick is Arsenic and Old Lace.
.
6.
https://youtu.be/AwSra5p8MDw
If any of you haven’t seen Good Morning, Vietnam yet, please rectify that immediately
Galaxy Quest
2. Return of the Pink Panther, just for Clouseau crashing two trucks in the same swimming pool which gets me every time.
https://youtu.be/emykVnzB4_Y
40 Year Old Virgin.
…mostly for this bit
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ricfZxjExt0
I’m very concerned about the similarities between BeefReefer and my tastes
I was told that I did not give everyone time to post the George Stevens movie and for this I am terribly sorry. So lets see, no Buster Keaton, no Charlie Chaplin, no Harold Lloyd nor Abbot and Costello or Laurel and Hardy. How about ” Beetlejuice” no wait “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” no let’s go with the stunning Jean Shepard’s A Christmas Story. Yes?
“I’ll take MacGruber!” – Tua Tagovailoa, making his third pick
“He keeps picking all the best ones!”
-Lea Michelle
6. Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
My prom was listed in my iCal as four pimps no hoes in reference to the below scene.
This ended up being false, as only two of us went stag and the other two had the gall to actually get dates, and not have them renege three days later!
/Oh, it’s a phenomenal story.
Fun fact: “No hose” was Deanna Favre’s only comment when she saw Brett dressed up as a fireman for Halloween
