I was watching ‘The Bear’ when I realized I hadn’t written this post yet, which is dumb because I’ve known what it was going to be all week, but knowing that meant that I could just keep kicking that can down the road because I knew what it was going to be.
Anyway, Richie was apologizing to Natalie when I remembered this, so I put the show on pause right when Natalie was looking all pensive and
Hnggh! And she’s damaged from a hellacious upbringing with a batshit crazy mother? Sign me the fuck up and bring me my tool kit! I can fix her.
Hang on, Mrs. Horatio is informing me that Natalie is not real and that even if she were I could likely not, in fact, fix her.
We’ll get the draft in a second but if you are not/have not watched The Bear, and if you have not seen The Banshees of Inisherin you need to remedy both of those with a quickness.
/looks at word count
Anyway, the draft!
This week we rely once again on Rikki-Tikki-Deadly who, when not dodging vacuums, does a great job coming up with draft ideas, as does Scotchnaut. The rest of you, frankly, could be doing better. As this off-season draws to a close and we prepare to move out of this space for Hippo Thoughts I do want to thank both of them; you’ve definitely made my life easier.
RTD was so excited about this draft that he kept after me for a couple of weeks, and I do think it’s a good one, although maybe not for Redshirt who might be too young to know what the hell’s going on.
This week we’re drafting bands from that long ago decade of mystery, mirth, and Ronald Reagan fucking up everything he touched like some kind of reverse Midas. Seriously, fuck that guy and his goblin, (that’s a pun!), wife.
The rules are simple yet complex. It must be a band. No solo acts. The band does not have to have only existed in the 80’s but it must have had its greatest impact in the 80’s, which is completely subjective and likely to generate all sorts of arguments, which is something I’m looking forward to. I already plan to get pretty much no work done tomorrow.
For instance, one of the bands RTD mentioned was The Ramones. The Ramones were indeed active in the 1980’s, but to me, (who is very old and for whom everything hurts), The Ramones are a 70’s band because that’s when they got their start, that’s when their best albums came out, (fight me on this), and that’s when they got their reputation as America’s first punk band.
But you could (and someone almost certainly will), argue that they were an 80’s band because they did a lot of stuff, (some of it even legal), in that decade as well. So go for it, but be prepared to make an argument.
Rikki has given me his first pick. Ladies and gentleman, The Smiths are off the board.
Not sure Rikki’s reasoning behind the pick, but to me they’re a perfect representation of the 80’s because they were never as good as people said they were, and also the lead guy made a bunch of money and then turned into a reactionary asshole when he got older.
With the second pick I’ll go with a band I think is a great representation of the 80’s as well, albeit for different reason, Athens GA’s REM.
Probably the first of what I’ll call the “jangle-rock” bands to make the leap from heavy college-rotation enjoyed by the 80’s version of hipster dipshits, (like me), to selling out arenas, (like the New Haven Coliseum, may it rest in peace), REM had, (imo), its best work in the 1980’s with albums, (remember those?), like Murmur and Life’s Rich Pageant.
The rest of you are on the clock.
Wait a sec, nobody picked Devo??? This oversight will not stand!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56u6g0POvo0
Yeah, that’s crazy!
Oh and I’ll take Aerosmith just for Pump. Permanent Vacation is a bonus.
I’m overseas, but did any of you pick Queen? If not, I choose Queen and you should all be ashamed of yourselves.
I know they were more 70s but flash Gordon and live at Wembley make it worth it
The Mighty Lemon Drops, just for this song. (1988)

I know that Ben’s powers are the stuff of legend, but I had no idea he could make women so dry they literally become in danger of catching on fire.
His wife can’t risk jogging this time of year
She can never wear corduroy pants.
Or go on hay rides.
or orgasm.
So that’s how the wildfires started?
Taking my own advice to add some skirts to my draft…Bananarama

My son was afraid of the tall blonde. He said she looked mean.
Berlin. Teri Nunn being the leads singer is mere coincidence.
Tallying up:
1. The Smiths
2. INXS
3. Talking Heads
4. Iron Maiden
5. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark
6. The Pogues
7. The Waterboys
Good draft. One of my best, probably. Giving myself an A today.
future draft idea, is to take a previous random draft and draft the bestest picks from within by user
but not your own
Can’t give an A to a sausage hang.
Get some chicks in there.
Kirsty MacColl singing on “Fairytale of New York” is really all I’ll ever need, but just to be agreeable I’ll sign the ladies of Heart as an UDFA. I could use a little more hairspray on my roster anyways.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41P8UxneDJE
ew, 80s Heart
Whatever, man, “These Dreams” is the platonic ideal of an 80’s music video.
Just a horrific song. Or the one where she gets pregnant, just awful.
[looks around sheepishly] – Rex Grossman
Is that the one with the panther? Lololol!
ok, last pick is Missing Persons. Bonus Fact: you can drive your young sons nuts by singing along with any of their more well-known tunes at the top of your voice.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQF7FDeUePA&ab_channel=AnalogueAudio1985
Dammit! I just thought of them
Last pick: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Yeah, they started in the 70ies and had great hits afterwards, but their greatest successes & songs were in the 80ies. (Their music videos on MTV sure helped)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtLpZWNyM0I
U2 wasn’t the only quasi-Christian band from across the pond.
The Alarm was pretty cool.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM3U6WLnXYI&pp=ygUJdGhlIGFsYXJt
XTC
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-JeQduJ0f8
ETA: And I should probably get some work done. So this is what I have.
The Replacements
U2
Pet Shop Boys
Def Leppard
The Bangles
Simple Minds
The Judds
XTC
I’ll take Squeeze. They started in ’78 but banged out 6(!) albums in the ’80’s.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbx_6gavLno&ab_channel=SqueezeVEVO
I didn’t see this one yet. Howsabout The Replacements?
https://youtu.be/k6cud1gp4RE
Yours Truly’s first pick. 🙂
Shit. I thought I looked at everything!
It was in a second level comment, so it would have been easily overlooked.
Noboby’s weighed in with some Country yet. The Judds
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXV1Q_AcerM
Was the soundtrack for my brothers and I beating the snot out of an Eight-Ball Deluxe pinball machine at the local bar. This was about the best of what they had on the jukebox.
Stealing my last pick, who I believe you will all agree wins me the draft. They started in the 70s but were undeniably most felt in the 80s, when they single-handedly preserved rock in the face of hair metal, pop, and everything else.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: AC/DC
I was going to pick them, but Highway to Hell, arguably their most popular album, was released in ’79.
Back in Black was bigger.
I think there are a lot of videos on a certain hub that have that as a central theme. Plus my highschool ( 80-84) feathered hair self did a lot of damage to my neck rocking to AC/DC, Krokus, Quiet Riot, Y&T, Alcatraz, Ozzy, and the Scorpions.
The argument about them being an 80’s band is finest I think of them as a 70’s band. I’d much rather have their 7 albums from that decade than the albums released afterwards.
Steal of the draft. Does anyone deny this? Nobody? No one denies this? Very well then.
Another band that was around in the 70ies, but didn’t hit the big time until the 80ies: Judas Priest.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCNNQxdO9H8
I even mentioned them in an earlier comment:
Ministry.
Off topic, happy 40th anniversary to George Brett losing his fucking mind
Maxx Crosby’s fave band? The Fixx, of course. Red Skies, Saved by Zero, One Thing Leads to Another, Stand or Fall, etc. And a even a little bit of paper thin philosophical questioning!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mP8Pe8tp2TQ&ab_channel=TheFixxVEVO
exxcellent choice
Technically, WHAM was a band.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yf_Lwe6p-Cg&pp=ygUEd2hhbQ%3D%3D
Dire Straits.
I’ll take “O’Canada” as it was created in 1880, no mention of the century in the post, and as I have been pushing the rules today, it’s a song, but as part of a larger celebration and they didn’t do albums back then
That’s not a band.
it was performed by one
Several, even.
Spaceman 3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVIl-rVzm2w
Simple Minds
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljIQo1OHkTI
Couldn’t get away from them for a little bit in the mid-80’s.
They are surprisingly well-represented on that 800 songs from the 80’s compilation that I have mentioned in the past.
[sees remaining picks on his board quickly getting crossed off]
[runs up to the podium in a panic]
7. The Waterboys
The Waterboys (1983)
A Pagan Place (1984)
This Is The Sea (1985)
Fisherman’s Blues (1988)
/knocks over Minnesota Vikings rep, who just realized they’re at the wrong draft and are gonna be late again.
What an extraordinary 5 year run and they are hardly talked about.
Thompson Twins cranked out a ton of hits in them ’80’s.

More Georgia jangle pop:
Definitely was on my list.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kb5rwG9e838
They were next on mine. Great band, deserved more love.
I would have called this band and told them, “If you’re not drafted, I’m gonna offer you a free agent contract.” The essence of jangle pop.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvuetnVoxIs
4th pick (playing catchup, sourry if this is too speedy), great late round value with the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwRnW89EsxI&pp=ygUMb2luZ28gYm9pbmdv
yeahright doesn’t know yet that he’ll be kicking himself very soon.
Oh indeed.
[refreshes page to see if there’s enough picks gone by to make his next…]
[throws down clipboard]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8-dzxTsA0M
The Eurythmics.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNJeKXr1I2w
Damn, they were my next pick.
For the haircut alone one must add Flock of Seagulls.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIpfWORQWhU
Hoodoo Gurus. The four albums from the 1980’s in that link are just fantastic. Another jangle-rock band, another college-radio staple that broke big, (nowhere near as big as REM, of course), and another favorite of my misspent youth.
They may still be touring. I need to check that out, although I’d be surprised if they got anywhere near me.
I loved those guys, saw them play in Athens GA back in the 80s. Same weekend I saw the B-52’s.
I checked their tour dates. The closest they’re coming to me is (checks notes). Australia.
Maybe I’ll just order a T-shirt.
And, not to steal a bit from any of our other DFOers, I would have killed a hobo to see a show with the Hoodoo Gurus and the B-52s back in their primes.
It was a wild weekend, saw Gurus on Friday night, B-52’s Saturday, ate all of our meals from the Varsity, and got kicked out of Cheetah 3 because my friend tried to muff dive the girl on the stage. Shit, I miss being young and being able to do stupid shit without being jailed.
What’ll ya have, what’ll ya have! I loved the Varsity!

Gonna defer to RTD on whether mythical bands qualify. I’ve completely lost control of the draft.
Mythical? you can buy their album. Hell, even Billy and the Boingers from Bloom County had a single.
They toured!
3rd pick: The Beat. Rank away.

Unrelated, the sports washing continues unabated.
https://twitter.com/SkySportsNews/status/1683501266666766340
6. The Pogues. There a few more distinctly “80’s” bands still on my board but I cannot pass up this kind of value:
Red Roses for Me (1984)
Rum, Sodomy, & the Lash (1985)
If I Should Fall from Grace with God (1988)
Peace and Love (1989)
The most suspiring thing about the Pogues and the 1980’s is that Shane McGowan survived either of them.
Pretty sure the 1980’s (the year 1980 specifically) was the last time Shane MacGowan was sober.
[checks Wikipedia, sees that he was born in 1957]
That means he’d have been 23 in 1980…oh, goodness, no. Retracted. Had to have been sometime in the late 60’s.
Check out the documentary ‘Crock of Gold.’ The last time he was sober was at best 1965.
Revised 4th pick: Metallica
Ride the Lightning (1984)
Master of Puppets (1986)
…And Justice For All (1988)
I personally detest Metallica but this is a fantastic pick for anyone who doesn’t.
They made some great music and made tons of money and somehow they’re still some of the most insufferable, miserable bastards you’d ever want to meet.
