Beaches Ain’t Shit: Tuesday Open Thread

I survived yet another encounter with my arch nemeses, Sand and Sunshine!

Victory is mine!

Just got back from the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, and it was…strange. Part of that was stumbling through the afternoon half-darkness caused by poor Canada’s fire issues. But more it’s Lake Michigan itself.

Quite simply, it’s too big. It looks like an ocean. You expect it to be grand. You expect it to be salty. You expect it to be…somewhere other than the Midwest.

Seriously, seeing this view while the weird flat Michigander accent floats up from the trail behind you is genuinely disconcerting.

Indiana: There’s Nothing We Can’t Ruin

The heart of darkness to this land of bland madness: Nelis’ Dutch Village. It’s a theme park in Holland, Michigan, where the theme is “What if we were in Holland, Holland?” The staff all wear 19th Century Cliche Dutch clothes, down to the wooden shoes. I downed several medicinal beers in an effort to smooth out the jarring strangeness of the experience.

Anyway:

-EMF Strikes 49ers Again! Well, no, not really. Modern electronics DO figure prominently in the story of Kyle Shanahan’s Wild Ride, however.

As you have heard by this point, the Niners head coach suffered severe injuries several weeks ago due to a head-on car crash. The incident (mysteriously kept quiet for two weeks) left Shanahan on the coaching equivalent of the Physically Unable to Perform List to start training camp.

By Shanahan’s own account, he was driving his Tesla with his cell phone on his lap when it (the phone) slipped between the seats. When he looked back up from his efforts to retreive tbe phone, a Mercedes SUV was bearing down on him.

Dramatization

Shanahan was left with a severe concussion, forty stitches above his eye, a broken left hand, broken nose and and three ribs.

No, wait, that’s the Niners’ Week 5 injury report.

Seriously though, biggest surprise here is that Kyle was driving a Model S. If you made a list of Most Cybertruck Coaches, Shanny would be number three (behind Sean Payton and Liam Whatshisname).

-Vita Vea wants out of Tampa. Buffalo desperately wants a gigantic defensive tackle to improve its league-worst run defense. The Bills would have to free up roughly $10 million in cap space, but for the love of God, Brandon Beane: make this happen.

-Denzel Ward is going to be paid $30 million per season to be the Last Man Standing in Cleveland. I appreciate that (as of press time) he’s not made any horseshit statements about Bringing a Championship to Cleveland. Get your money, bro, and hope both your brain and your soul are intact enough to enjoy it after you hang up your cleats.

Found a funny:

say what you will about AI, always-on voice recording and auto dictation has been a game changer for my workflows. Save post and close app. Yeah Footlong meatball sub on white. No veggies. Don’t toast it. Ranch and barbecue sauce. Yeah, ranch and bargecue sauce. More. More. Little more please

I think I’m going to start using “It’s staying weird!” when a Cincinnati team doesn’t blow the game and actually wins.

Thanks Rev.
Odd theme parks of the world sounds like a potential Monday morning mock draft topic to me. I’m sure we’ve all run up on a couple of those.

I’m taking The Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz, CA!

I had to attend to some business in Hollywood this afternoon and it was 87° and sunny and as such the women were all half-naked and IT WAS FREAKIN’ AWESOME.

If you have yet too see the epic masterpiece “The Odyssey, Run don’t walk for you simply must see this (Anne Hathaway sucks) adventure on the big screen. The sound, the cinematography? Beyond compare. This one will stick with (yes they did make sweeping changes to the novel) for years to come

Breathtaking film making.

Horatio Cornblower

I do appreciate Shanahan owning up to being at fault for the accident, despite the Palo Alto police “accidentally” saying the person who wasn’t a famous local football coach was actually at fault.

Yeah, credit to Shanahan for that. Not to single out 49ers fans but I guarantee more than a few dipshits would have made it their life’s mission to threaten and harrass the poor guy if Shanny had let that go uncorrected.

FUN GEOGRAPHY FACT: The biggest lake on the planet is the Caspian Sea in Central Asia, and very far Eastern Europe. It’s so big, it’s filled with seawater.

THIS HAS BEEN YOUR USELESS GEOGRAPHY FACT BROUGHT TO YOU BY FORMER GEOGRAPY PROFESSOR WCS

Gatoraids

tip of that hat to you Professor

Sharkbait

Holy shit what a throwback. I loved watching this. I even had the MS DOS game.

Too bad the show itself aged like milk

Gatoraids

yeah fun edutainment game back in the days, harder to find images of the old game cuz the new Netflix show clogs up search and im too lazy to find references to the old gumshoes

There’s this weird thing about most of the “Great Lakes”-(Lake Erie excepted because it’s a shit piece of water) They’re gotdamn massive. It’s like “Great” referred to their size and not how wonderful they are.

/also, I’ve swam on(?) five different beaches on Superior and they were all ice cold

ballsofsteelandfury

I first heard of Great Slave Lake and Yellowknife through a Hardy Boys book.

I’ve always wanted to go there…

We backpacked Isle Royale on Lake Superior and I never managed to stay in that goddamn water more than the 5 seconds it took for me to resurface and lunge for shore.

There was shrinkage

Superior never gives up her dead.

Gumbygirl

Is that the big lake they call Gitche Gumee?

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Is Denzel Ward going to the Browns or the Cave? And does it matter?

scotchnaut

Many thanks to you for filling in for me. I really appreciate it.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

My pleasure. Thanks for carrying the load 90% of the year.

Doktor Zymm

The most surprising thing for me about Baby Shanny’s accident is that his Tesla didn’t burst into flames and lock him inside. Not at all surprising: that neither Kyle nor the Merc SUV driver was paying enough attention to the road not to drive directly into each other

ballsofsteelandfury

No amount of money is worth going to Cleveland

BallsofLacrosseAndMapleSyrup

But what about for the skyline chili?

ballsofsteelandfury

Hey!
