Good morning!  The sun is finally out in Los Angeles after a couple more days of rain and I’m thinking it would be nice to drive out east and see how much snow there is on the mountains.

Are there sports? Probably! Let’s see what ESPN says:

Oh, the FA Cup is happening!  My understanding is that it’s basically a giant open tournament in England where everyone can participate, from the biggest moneyed powerhouses like Arsenal and Chelsea down to the tiniest town club teams like Westonfieldshire and Derbylivingstonpool. Fun!

Hockey!  There’s a bunch of stuff.

College Basketball!  Some of that going on too!

NFL!  Speculation season!  Today’s topic: how much did the league pay Colin Kaepernick?

So we went hiking up the Mt. Wilson trail. I didn’t get to see any snow, really (I was hoping to see it in the mountains; we could only see a little from the freeway) but it was still a pretty nice hike.

They used to play there every night, now just on Saturdays. I think they’ve been there since the 1970s, and haven’t added any new songs since then. I first saw them in 1996 and it was like being in a time warp even then.

/fave anecdote regarding folks that work for ‘the city’-meaning small communities

It was Xmas eve about 8 years ago. One of my uncles-in-law was drinking up a storm. And a snowstorm was brewing outside. It was very obvious that he’d be called into work to start plowing the roads. I said, ‘you’re gonna be at work in a bit…’ He understands what I’m getting at and replies, ‘it’s okay, I’ll be fine and my buddies are going to be okay too’.

He then goes on to tell me that he’s quite sure that the other snowplow driver and the sidewalk-cleaner guy are all in the bag at this point and they’ve all gone thru this several times before. “They can’t fire us all at the same time. They’d be completely fucked.’

This wasn’t a ‘the union has our back’ thing. It was a ‘no one here in this small town has the requisite licences to operate the machinery that we operate’ thingy.

I had a six months where I was doing the job of three people in two locations. Thankfully, I’m a nice, trustworthy guy so I didn’t abuse my authority, but I had carte blanche to do what I wanted, how I wanted, so long as the job gets done.

I pretty much told my boss and their bosses, “I can this, but I need you guys to get out of my way and let me do my job.”

Every time I ride the LA Metro, I think of instituting a DFO Metro Crawl where we visit various bars adjacent to Metro stations. It would certainly eliminate the drinking/ driving element and the need for Uber.

My last trip on the Metro was abruptly stopped since a train in front of ours killed a pedestrian which forced me to get an uber in the middle of Watts.

I’m amazed the driver took the call. We got in the car and said “Get me to El Segundo right now!”

I need to do more stretching but can never remember to do it. I’m also kinda scared of how much yoga is going to hurt for the first few weeks when I do it
