Your “Ugh – Two (More) Weeks of that ‘PATS NATION!!’ Garbage?” Monday Evening Open Thread

NFL News:

  • The most exciting Superb Owl week news so far is that Jim Tomsula has been hired by the [Redacteds] as their new D-line coach.
    • the hobo has come home!
      • I hope Big Daddy Drew keeps the “lifehacks” going.
    • Dan Snyder is relieved he now has someone he can pay in old Six Flags mattresses.
  • Bob Kraft’s son Jonathan took a run at Ryan Grigson as he walked out Indy’s door, stating that the Deflategate game “might have been Ryan’s pinnacle”.
    • sounds like New England’s Dean Spanos has his own “participant” list.
  • Here is most pundits’ talking point for the next two weeks: “Is Matt Ryan A Elite Quarterback?”
    • but here’s the good stuff

Finally, just fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

Two weeks of this shit

is going to kill me. According to PFT, New England is a three-point favorite over Atlanta, and the over-under is set at 58.5.

Canada 150:

January 23, 1922 – the first human test of insulin is conducted.

  • 14-year-old Leonard Thompson, near-death from diabetes in a Toronto hospital, is given the test injections.
    • he survived.
  • Following more successful tests, the Toronto researchers — Frederick Banting, Charles Best, J.B. Collip and their supervisor, J.J.R. Macleod — were able to announce the discovery of insulin.

  • Research into diabetes dates to 1869 & German medical student Paul Langerhans, found that within the pancreatic tissue that produces digestive juices there were clusters of cells whose function was unknown. Some of these cells were eventually shown to be the insulin-producing beta cells.
    • followed in 1889 by German researchers Oskar Minkowski and Josef von Mehring,
      • they discovered that removing a dog’s pancreas led to immediate onset of diabetic symptoms,
  • This one was named Marjorie.
    This one was named Marjorie.

But despite further research (& many dead dogs), no one could identify the pancreatic secretion that prevented diabetes.

    • until Banting & his team decided to try injecting an extract of degenerated dog pancreas into a diabetic dog
      • this lowered its blood sugar enough to give them a direction to follow, leading to human tests and eventual transition to fetal – later adult – swine & bovine insulin.

I’m sure Sill could further enlighten/correct this.

Here’s a signet ring that belonged to my dad. He was a ground radar operator during the Berlin Airlift, at Tempelhof Airport. The brass ring is made from melted down artillery shell casings.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

My dad was flying patrol/ escort/ saber rattling duty at that time as a crew chief aboard a B-29; it’d be interesting if there was a beep.

laserguru

My dad was a recent enlisted man and he got his jaw broken by a life time and very straight CPO in San Diego when my dad tried to drunken proposition him.

That’s my Pops WWII story.

Nice work. Also I apologize for me tonight. I am mixing overdosing on cold meds, allergy meds and then alcohol a small bit on top of it tonight. I am hoping for like 4 hours of sleep.

Unsurprised

You are a hero.

People behind devices bitching about people taking it to the streets makes me gladder to be older every fucking day.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

Yep, fat worthless fucks setting at their keyboards bitching about someone else’s expression who is actually making a public statement and putting a face to it.

Big Black Richard

I find both groups useless, though not equally useless.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

They aren’t protesting for you or your convenience, but from what you’ve said I believe you agree with the sentiment. My own way is to donate to several organizations that are antithetical to the rightwing and looneywing in power now, but have no problem with and support those that speak out in person.

Unsurprised

They’re protesting to make themselves feel better. Like I replied to a black friend who posted a photo of a man with a sign that asked “Will I see you nice white ladies at the next BLM march?,” the answer is an obvious “Fuck no.” Solidarity is a myth. Intersectional opposition is a myth. The Women’s Marches were 100% useless except to make a bunch of mostly white women feel better about themselves without doing any actual hard work.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

And my point above comes shining through.

Unsurprised

Anyone who thinks protests and marches matter is wrong and/or ignorant. They don’t. They never have and they never will. MLK’s civil rights march didn’t move Congress to act. The white boys murdered in Philadelphia, Mississippi did – a fact that the Freedom Bus organizers not only considered might happen, but it turns out EXPECTED to happen. They sacrificed people’s lives and safety for federal action. Schools were desegregated by protesters and marches – they were desegregated by armed U.S. Marshals and armed, federalized National Guardsmen. Millions of people have protested against government action in this country and never has that alone changed anything. It didn’t end the Vietnam War, Desert Shield/Storm, or OIF. Occupy Wall Street failed. BLM has failed.

Globally, there have been rallies and marches of groups well over 1 million people strong. I witnessed two when I was in Spain – one in Barcelona and one I stumbled into in Madrid – against ETA. Didn’t change anything. People have marched against autocrats like Putin and Mubarak and Erdogan. Nothing changed.

The only thing that can and does ever change is force. Most people equate that with physical violence. I am more interested in economic coercion, and more importantly, political manipulation. But no one wants to get involved in the machinery of electoral politics. Democrats have a flawless system to give mini-autocrats just enough power to otherwise shut the fuck up – people who are either so invested or have the time to bother. Most people don’t. Gerrymandering can’t be done on the basis of race, sex, or numerous other criteria because it’s unconstitutional. You know what isn’t? Gerrymandering based on political registration. And since most minorities are Democrats, and in the states where this is most ruthlessly applied, that’s basically enough to gerrymander the whites together and the blacks together, and the Supreme Court said that’s perfectly fine. But God forbid minorities change their political affiliations. God forbid anyone try any new or different strategies. There’s a reason why HRC lost using the same idiots that she used to lose the 2008 primaries – because they’re invested. They would rather hire people who are loyal than those who are smart. And they don’t care because they won’t suffer the consequences of Democrats actually losing. No one with any power in the state parties or the DNC will suffer, so they don’t care. They don’t want new people. They don’t want new ideas. They are okay with being “principled, civil, [fill in the blank bullshit term]” losers because that’s good enough. I’ve had enough. I’ve been telling everyone I know that they’d be better off becoming Republicans and trying to change that party from inside than sticking with the losers in the Republican Lite Party.

Which all goes back to my original point: NONE OF THIS MATTERS.

No one will do the hard work. The ones who will try won’t have enough support to matter, and Trump will be re-elected in 2020. Sure the Dems may get a few seats in 2018 because that is the historical trend during the midterms after a new President is elected, but they won’t take either house.

Fuck it. I’m done with this shit.

Unsurprised

Fuck. The only way to stop these fuckers is to vote them out. Litigation works, sometimes, but there is always the chance that they will take the Andrew Jackson approach, who defied the Supreme Court and got away with it because he had the Army and the only way the Court could make him not force the Cherokees onto the Trail of Tears was for them to get their own army to stop him.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

The protests make a point and always have; people out in force are a physical manifestation of opposition; it is simply making a statement, and most likely a cathartic release to anger and frustration. Making 100% generalizations about large groups of people is wrong and/or ignorant. You have no idea what people are doing hard work and those who are not. You have no idea how these people are motivated; being together physically with those that share this is a powerful momentum. Separating the protests that you mentioned above is an oversimplification of interrelated actions and movements. Large groups of organized people in the streets makes elected people nervous and moves them to action, granted sometimes that action is cosmetic, sometimes it is apart of meaningful results. It provides people with a basis visceral basis that they are part of something.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

“The only way to stop these fuckers is to vote them out.”

True that.

Don T

Tch, every real revolution and uprising has been the product of asses in the street or jungle. With or without financial backing or arms. One demonstration is never enough, maybe a hundred won’t be enough either. The Plaza de Mayo Mothers in Argentina knew it. The Indians under the British Crown knew it. But you take your convictions to the street. I can see where demonstrations in this age would lend themselves for vanity, selfies, and crap, but damn: putting the issues and the massive and unequivocal affront to comformity in the farthest background is, in my opinion, perpetuating injustice by complacency. Letting posers, whether real or strawpersons be the narrative IS the tactic of the establishment. That’s my take anyway, not a universal truth.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

However, all that I said above will be moot in a few decades; it’s just that these assholes will hasten our descent into a dystopian future.

So cheers mate.

Big Black Richard

I have no problem with them protesting, I just don’t think those in power will ever take the protests seriously. We could put 75 million people on the streets of America, and the powerful won’t do a damn thing unless they see that their power is in jeopardy. That ain’t the case right now.

The days of protesters being able to shame the country into doing the right thing are long over. This country no longer has the ability to be shamed.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

Agree to a certain point; I believe that is simply a statement more than any effort to shame them; agreed that it can’t be done.

Don T

On the other hand, if only a guarantee of success would spur action, immobilty would feel like an accomplishment. That would make for a liveable life, a happy one even. Scruples do get in the way of good times, and abnegation is not an imperative.
Point is, uh… ¿Don’t procreate?

Don T

In the abstract, of course. Everyone should do their thing. Just, for the love of everything dear, NEVER make me hold a baby.

Don T

I don’t think “use” is an appropriate metric for protest.

Don T

For the record: I don’t think all keyboard warriors are fat. And, in the spirit of full disclosure, I’m quite portly myself.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

Yeah, that was a very internetie statement, but the point is valid. Typing very hard is the ultimate in inaction. Yet here I am. Better post another confusing gif.

Don T

The reach through media is immeasurably more efficient, but serves its purpose only when it behooves one and others to action–i.e., stuff other than tap tap tap words words SCREED.
Goddamn, I’m not even a fan of democracy, and here I am: defending the only valuable thing it has, open dissent.

I just double checked to make sure the Sovlenian…Sovanian…the fucking dude from Slovenia crashing in my apartment from work, is laying where if he vomits, its pools to the side of him, as oppose to in his throat.

Fucking Mondays right?

Side note…people from the old main land apparently cannot handle Scotch.

Unsurprised

Which is probably why no one has successfully invaded Scotland in centuries

JustStopDude

Didn’t Mel Gibson invade the English to save the English, from the English?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I just read that NC State beat Duke. Some folks around here are probably pretty happy about that.

Unsurprised

Deliriously so

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh
Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

So here’s a question: the President’s tax records aren’t subject to FOIA. But why doesn’t Congress amend the FOIA to make it so? I would think even the Republican congress could see the value in this; it gives them ammunition to use against Trump if they ever happen to need it or want it.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

They won’t do shit. They are in a great place to benefit themselves and cohorts, and oppress those that are different from their fantasy.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I would think they’d prefer Pence – he’d be perfectly happy to enact the exact same agenda with far less fanfare – and thus draw far less attention to it.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

They have plenty to do and Trump will just sign it like a good boy.

Unsurprised

This too

Unsurprised

People won’t care if Trump does it. They’re too stupid and easily distracted by his tweets and symbolic shit like the lack of diversity in his Cabinet. People worry about insignificant shit while letting the big things pass by unmolested because, well, for the same reason that it’s easier to sell a big lie than a little one. People are generally trusting and optimistic. You know – stupid. Selling a big lie requires bold assertions and shamelessness, which Trump is perfect for. More importantly, millions of people like Trump as a person and it cannot be overstated how important that is in politics. Pence looks like a fucking wraith, and people don’t like him. That’s why he got his ass kicked in the primaries. The funny thing is that Kasich was too principled or whatever to run with Trump, and at least he’s bearably evil. Pence is just Dark Lord of Hell evil and he could never successfully run for President or really be much of a President on his own, even with the Democrats in opposition.

Unsurprised

For the same reason that almost no laws apply to the President or Congress: They’re selfish assholes

Marc Trestmans Windowless Van

I have no idea how Trump didn’t try to steal this and use it as his campaign theme.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEqxalOs_58

WCS

He most certainly tried, only to have Parker and Stone sue.

Unsurprised

HOW DARE SOMEONE STAND UP TO TRUMP!
