As you might have read by now, Tom Petty has died. I’m not aware of any particular connection that Tom might have had to the NFL, whether he was a fan of the sport or of any team in particular (he was born in Gainesville, so let’s not sully the man’s memory by assuming he liked the Jaguars or even the Gators). What I do know is that Tom Petty’s musical performance at halftime of Superbowl XLII heralded quite possibly the greatest moment of football schadenfreude in the history of the sport.
I hope that Tom is resting in peace among the wildflowers, and I thought we’d sent him off with a surprise edition of Request Line. Drop your favorite Tom Petty songs (or Traveling Wilbury’s songs, or King of the Hill clips where he voiced Lucky), in the comments and you can help cheer up your fellows here on what is turning out to be a terrible, terrible day.
Big fan, yesterday sucked, today ain’t gonna be much better, other than that it’s not yesterday.
Just a wonderful, happy, pretty song:
Well fuck.
Despite playing a musical style a little easy for my musical tastes there’s no denying he was a soundtrack to my entire adult and near adult life.
This one I remember from high school.
as is this one.
This seems somewhat appropriate.
Such a great soundtrack; cover of Beck’s Asshole (phrasing):
One of my favorites. The Johnny Cash cover with TP&HBs as backing band is worth a listen, too.
Super sneaky pick. He was a huge fan of Lindsey Buckingham.
Love this tune. Wish I could find the original live version.
Gotta get that other creepy af video in there
Amazing video that.
…and Carr is down 2-6 weeks. Today sucks.
“That’s my job and I do it well.”

I’m not sure whether I should anticipate an easy Chiefs win or a heart-rending last-second win for the Chiefs brought on by a series of boneheaded mistakes by the [*Redacteds].
/went bungee-jumping in the early 90’s
One of my buddies made a mix tape to play while we all took our turns. I was the first to jump. This was the first song.
This tune was on his tape as well.
Can’t ever hear this song without thinking of Buffalo Bill.
And the song that introduced me to Lucinda Williams many moons ago.
How PFT readers view the NFL concussion settlement:
(driving home)
“How can today get any worse?”
(turns on radio, hears new about Tom Petty)
“That wasn’t a challenge, 2017.”
I have a dumb irrational affinity for this song, but it also feels relevant to the occasion
[sees he’s got a matchup with Chris Conte, begins humming to himself]

I’d forgotten that Plax kneeled after he scored that touchdown. SO DISRESPECTFUL TO OUR TROOPS
Plaxico Burress was being disrespectful to Patriots before it was cool.
Another fun one we get to watch the bodies drop to:
Long time lurker, first time poster. This one just hurts, especially after everything else that happened today. Here’s my contribution:
Thanks so much for weighing in, OhQueso.
Shit. Didn’t see this here. So crossposting:
Folks, there’s an unacceptable number of Traveling Wilburys left breathing. In fairness, it took me .4 seconds to make a Tom Petty and the Heartstoppers joke after the news broke in the office, but I’m getting really tired of watching all the good shit die.
Oh shit! Tom was Lucky!

Are you fucking kidding me, CBS?
What’s the time on it?
Just now. He’s not expected to survive for long.
Yeah, just read chronology of the posts.
If you’re worried about having put the post up, doesn’t sound like you need to. If he’s not gone yet, he will be.
Let’s do this.
This one belongs to me, dammit.
Damnit, I was going to post that song.
Sorry man. I’ve used that as my walkaway song too often to forget about it now.
Some of Mr. Petty’s more recent endeavours.
This one just so happened to have become very recently pertinent to me.
RIP, Sir.
