Hey! Here’s a light, frothy question for a Saturday night. And I’m asking because I feel my emotions being manipulated and am unsure of some basic facts. How bad is the illegal immigration/asylum seeker problem along our border with Mexico? And what would be the broad strokes towards a common sense solution going forward, irrespective of any political leaning? Seems we had people streaming into our northeastern borders at other times in our history, and there was a system in place then. Personally, I want anyone who wishes to live here to be given that opportunity. Let’s get your kiddos in school. Let’s get you working, but on the books. We need more tax base. Let’s diversify the populations of our communities and schools. Let’s be bilingual (at least).
I feel like this may be the key issue of the midterm elections (especially if there’s going to be photos of despondent children living in makeshift concentration camps), and it’s so mired in partisan horseshit, I feel the need to understand it at its root.
I’m angry that these children are being taken from their parents. I’m terrified that apparently no one seems to know where any of the female children or infants are. I’m angry that the care workers ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH THE CHILDREN, who are experiencing toxic stress syndrome from the anxiety they’re suffering. I’m angry that the people responsible for this are using these children as living bargaining chips in order to fulfill an absurd campaign promise that does nothing but serve the unquenchable ego of a narcissistic maniac. And I’m angry that no matter how hard I try to escape the truth, the reality of the situation is, regardless of who I voted for, I am an American and this is a representative democracy. Therefore, all of this is being done in my name.
