Your “Now What Will He Do?” Wednesday Evening Open Thread

NFL News:

  • No London Jags just yet: Shad Khan has withdrawn his offer to buy Wembley Stadium.
    • It was rumoured that he didn’t have enough FA member votes to get the deal through, so he decided to stop wasting his time.
      • It doesn’t help that the team he owns – Fulham – is 17th on the Premiership table, with only 5 points after 8 matches.
    • The Jags will, however, continue to play one game per year in London.

  • The owners meetings were this week. Here’s some highlights (?):
    • NFL transparency everyone: Jimmy Haslam has been named to the NFL’s compensation committee.
      • He replaces Clark Hunt & Bob McNair, as the size of the committee is being reduced from 6 to 4 members.
        • Jerry Jones has left the committee’s unofficial fifth position.
    • Roger Goodell says, “I don’t think there has been a better time to be an NFL fan.”
      • Well sure – it’s easy to talk tough when you don’t have to kiss the President’s ass anymore.
    • The Chargers have increased their PSL projections to $150 million from $400 million.
      • Roger Goodell echoed the belief that everything is doubleplusgood:
        • “Lots of football, lots of building still to do,” Goodell said. “And frankly, we were out of the market for a long time, and we have to earn our way back with our fans. We have to build that relationship back with our fans and make sure that we do it right.”

  • With Josh Allen hurt & Nathan Peterman being a turnover machine, the Bills will start Derek Anderson on Sunday.
    • Meanwhile, in New York, Colin Kaepernick’s lawyer received an unexpected erection.
  • Adam Vinatieri is just 10 points from Morten Andersen’s all-time points record.
    • In his career, Vinatieri has 570 field goals, 823 extra points and one two-point conversion. Andersen had 565 field goals and 849 extra points.

Finally, the reporters portrayed in the movie “Spotlight” apparently still all have jobs, and have turned their attentions to the life of Aaron Hernandez.

  • This week’s installment is about his time with the Patriots.
    • The highlight is about Tom Brady telling ex-Gators QB Tim Tebow, then with the Denver Broncos, that he was doing his best to “watch over” both Hernandez and former Gators player Brandon Spikes:
      • “I appreciate that, man. They’re good guys,” Tebow responded.
      • “Yeah,” Brady said. But they’re “a lot to handle.”
  • The whole thing is, in retrospect, a blueprint for not noticing someone in a spiral, because everyone sees one part of the oncoming crash, but “code” keeps people from sharing those concerns with others.

I’m not sure what’s more ridiculous about this email I got from the GWS CEO, the content or the fact he’s not playing shitty music:

Dear BFC,

Thank you for your support throughout the 2018 season. It was a season we can all be proud of. To make finals for our third consecutive year was a very strong performance against a backdrop of significant injuries. And whilst we would like to have progressed further, we do believe we have the playing list and off-field personnel capable of challenging strongly in 2019 and the years ahead.

This time of year is a period of change for all 18 clubs in the AFL competition. The trade period saw some change for our club, with some long-serving players in particular moving on. We know such change is felt acutely by our members and fans, but rest assured we have secured some excellent outcomes for the short, medium and long-term success of the club.

As a valued member, we feel it’s important you have an insight into why some of the changes occur. Broadly speaking we are a unique club when compared to the other 17 AFL clubs, simply by virtue of the fact that we were set up seven years ago with unprecedented list rules. The major factors that have caused our player movement this trade period include:
A highly talented list – arguably the best in the AFL – that needs to be remunerated appropriately
Changes to our original list establishment rules over recent years, most notably the reduction in our list size and salary cap ahead of schedule
The removal of the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) affecting our player payments plan
Many of these list rules have been phased out over the past two to three years – well ahead of schedule – and in some cases they have been removed despite an expectation they would always be in place. I believe we have done an excellent job adapting our list management strategy in accordance with these rule changes, in addition to retaining the vast majority of our list. We have been aggressively managing our salary cap for multiple seasons, but the reality is when you have in excess of $3 million removed from your salary cap in the space of 2-3 years, it’s inevitable some high calibre players would need to find new clubs.

We also have a group of players in a similar age bracket that are approaching the prime of their careers in terms of performance and earning capacity – they will also reach free agency at similar times. Should players leave through free agency, the club has no control on what compensation it will receive; which is why in some situations we have made the decision to facilitate a trade before a player is out of contract. When making decisions about trading players a range of factors are considered for each individual – such as injury history, salary cap impact, on-field opportunity etc – and although we’d obviously love to keep all our players, the AFL list management rules, salary cap mechanisms and free agency parameters make this simply impossible.

The important thing to remember is that we have been focused on getting quality returns for our players and obtaining high draft picks to add more talent to our already outstanding list. We now have three first-round picks and four picks in the top 25 in the upcoming NAB AFL Draft which is an extremely strong hand. We look forward to heading to what is widely regarded as one of the strongest drafts in recent history with a host of selections to secure the next wave of GIANTS. And in the 2019 draft we already have secured Essendon’s first-round pick, Carlton’s second-round pick and Gold Coast’s fourth-round pick.

So, while the trade period can pose some challenges, it also provides us with a huge amount of opportunity and excitement and I couldn’t be more optimistic about our chances of success in 2019 and beyond. We have continued to set ourselves up for sustained success. We will enter 2019 with a strong culture and an outstanding playing list.

Dylan Shiel, Tom Scully, Rory Lobb and Will Setterfield all depart with our best wishes. They have all been part of building this club and as such we will always consider them GIANTS.

Once again, thank you for your support in 2018, we can’t wait for the 2019 season to begin.

David Matthews, GIANTS CEO

Hi folks!

Happy to report that after 2 weeks of grueling agonizing knee pain I was able to get my five miles on the beach today.

I’m still doing my gym work but my morning beach walk is my damn meditation.

A little soreness but nothing that ice, ibuprofin and CBD can’t cure.

Don’t let nobody tell you that atmospheric pressure doesn’t fuck with a persons preexisting condition.

Where’s my rheumatiz medicine?

I’m back y’all!

Man, it’s awesome how you plow through it to get your walks in. May the marine layer help. Or not. I still haven’t learned how it works.

Fronkenshteen

HOT TAKE!!: Marmalard will lead the (severely underrated) Bolts to the AFC Championship game, where they will lose to NE or KC. BUT they will cover the spread in the loss.

WCS

Holy shit, this is Casey at the Bat now.

I didn’t win the Powerball, but, neither did anyone else. Next drawing is going to be close to half a billion dollars.

Whomever wins this, or the MegaMillions will have enough to run for President. That’s how it works in this country, right?

Game Time Decision

FYI as a Canadian, i don’t pay tax on lottery winnings, so give me or one of the other Canucks the ticket, we’ll take %25 percent and gift you the rest. Deal?

Dolph Ucker

I know it’s early and it’s a long season and it was just the Blues and all that…
But the Ice Alouettes just won another one. Which means they already have more wins than the Manziel Alouettes. I did not expect much going in (and I still shouldn’t, I guess), but they’re a lot of fun so far.

“You think you’re a better fan than me? Prove it!”

Look you little shit, I root for one, count ’em one, goddamn team. I don’t decorate my room and clothe my body with every fucking team in the National League and call myself a fan. You suck, kid, and if you don’t get your shit together you’re gonna wind up turning tricks on the Deuce for quarters to support your combination meth-and-baseball-hat habit. AND NO ONE’S GONNA FEEL SORRY FOR YOU!!!

God I hate that fucking commercial.

Don’t think I’ve seen this one.

Man, I never realized how uninterested in baseball I really was. Which is too bad, because I think the people who enjoy really get ‘it’. It’s the opposite of the nfl. Nobody watches baseball (or hockey) but those who do really enjoy it and really love the sport. Then everyone watches the nfl; so much so that even people who go form communities based on their hated for everything about the league, well those are your primary audience.

I really hope Khalil Mack’s ankle is healthy enough to step on Tom Brady this weekend.

Ok, after 3 flights in the last 36 hours, I don’t have to fly again until Sunday. Time to rest, and by rest I mean do entirely too much work until I burn out and can’t stop bitching.

Brick Meathook

You fly more than a pilot.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

And lately, soberer.

That Treehouse ever get there? Because you would have three days to drink it, and I have faith you can do it.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

The treehouse I shipped to my buddy whose wedding I’m going to or the case or so I brought back as my luggage? Because yes.

Horatio Cornblower

Greatest wedding gift ever.

I hear ya. Not to long ago I did the 24 hour four legged trip (not a dog joke) and wasn’t good for a few days. You stopped and went, got back on. At least I got it over with.
