Monday Morning Mock Draft: Chapter The XVIII

One of the biggest things I miss from our old site was the mock drafts that used to run every Friday. Those were fantastic time wasters, and a good one was a virtual guarantee that you were going to be far from productive at work, as your day instead degenerated into arguments with strangers over who would be the best Saturday cartoon character to have sex with, (and now we all know how that would go), or some other equally inane topic, all of which were still more important than that TPS report deadline your boss was yelling about. Good times.

Well, it’s been long enough. After a discussion in the back channels yours truly is bringing it back, with some slight rule changes. The old site had 4-5 main contributors, one of whom may not have been real. So they’d do 2-3 rounds themselves, then kick it to the kommentariat to draft whatever was left over. You can do that when you’ve only taken 10-15 of whatever topic was up for drafting. We, however, are a much more connected group when it comes to the writin’ and draftin’ of things, so if we did that we’d easily take out 30-50 before we threw the bedraggled leftovers to our beloved readership. That’s no fun. So these drafts will just leap right into it.

Also, for content and alliteration reasons, we’ve moved the draft to Monday mornings, so get ready to kill your productivity right from the start.

First come, first served, subject to my randomly assigning the first pick to someone else, generally because they came up with the idea. Or because they bribed me. For now, please wait 10 picks or 30 minutes before making another one.

This week’s subject comes from Twitter thread I’m involved in with some people from KSK and DFO, although I don’t think any of them are all that active around here these days. Maybe we should air out the Clubhouse? Eh, seems like work.

Anyhoo, one of them, Duchess to be exact, was talking about persons being perfectly case for roles. A couple of names and films were tossed back and forth and a lightbulb went off above my head. After replacing that bulb, and brushing the glass out of what’s left of my hair, I went back into the conversation and it would eventually occurred to me that this would be a good draft topic. I did tell them that I’d be using it, so perhaps one of more old friends will stumble by.

This week’s topic is an actor or actress you feel was perfectly cast in a movie or on a TV show. I’d say plays, too, but that seems like a waste on a group like us whose main ambition is to spend as much time inside as possible and as little of that time wearing pants as is possible. So movies and TV shows it is.

With the first pick of the draft I will take the actor and role that Duchess started the conversation with, James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano.

Yeah, he’s the featured image, too. The casting was that good.

The rest of you are now on the clock,

Ted Knight was such a great actor.

BeefReeferLives

Didja ever see “Novocaine”?

BeefReeferLives

Mixed reviews, but I liked it a lot. Thought Steve was great in it.

Gumbygirl

Yes! He hates these cans!

This flight is taking off and you guys are slower than the kid Britt Reid hit with his car after drinking a pony keg. So i leave you with two picks to space out over the time I’m in the air–

1) Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy

https://youtu.be/q3M_wBxZQpE

2) Peter Sellers as Inspector Closeau

If you think Steve Martin “did fine” then you need to reconsider.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Oh and since no one will pick her, I’ll add another:

Courtney Cox as Jules in Cougartown

BeefReeferLives

Not to mention Cyrano de Bergerac. Ghaaaaa.
Yeah, Steve has done great stuff, but he has also grabbed the money with both hands and done some absolute shyte.

Hey how come no one has picked Dr. Huxtable?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Cause he wasn’t perfectly cast. Darren Sharper could have easily played that role just as well.

Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct

I really liked Lebowski as Rooster Cogburn.

So did I, but John Wayne will always be “Rooster” to me.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Couldn’t understand a word he said. Resort to subtitles!

I’m shocked this is still here

This is deep value

Kieran Culkin in Igby Goes Down. There’s nobody in the world that could make you root for Igby, really, but Culkin is probably the only person on earth who could make you feel sympathy for him.

I read Lonesome Dove before the miniseries came out. After seeing it, Robert Duvall will always be Augustus McCrae to me.

Warthog

I felt that Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall were great choices, but they should’ve switched roles.

ArmedandHammered

Clint Eastwood – Dirty Harry and yes, I know I just entered one but I have to be away from the PC for the rest of the afternoon

ArmedandHammered

Paul Newman – Cool Hand Luke

scotchnaut

Oof. I think we have a failure to communicate. It’s Strother Martin that kills it in that movie.

I’ll take Hunter Henry in The Glass (tight end) Menagerie.*

*he hurt himself in practice today

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I’d like to draft every single person from The Princess Bride, but since the killjoy commissioner is all “you can’t draft fourteen people with one pick” I’ll go with one of the leads: Westley.

Michael Chiklis as Vic Mackey from The Shield. I didn’t think the commish had that performance in him.

Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump

Most would pick the Lamb movie as far as Jodie Foster is concerned but I really liked her turn in Inside Man. (please don’t tell me it was actually Rod Steiger) SPOILER CLIP-Her intelligence and uber-cynicism enables her to suss out what is actually going on and vaults her from a handler to one of the main players.

As could have Matt LeBlanc and/or the monkey from Ed.

Carroll O’Connor does the racist sheriff in In The Heat Of The Night to perfection. Just watch this scene.

Warthog

That was Rod Steiger. Carrol O’Connor did the TV show.

Warthog

You could just change the clip and then nobody will know what the hell I’m talking about.

scotchnaut

Oh, fuck me. I knew that!

Warthog

To be fairrrrr, Carrol O’Connor was cast perfectly as Rod Steiger in the show.
