Monday Morning Mock Drafts: Let’s Run It Again

Guten Tag, drones.

For this week’s draft we reach into the Grab BagO’ Suggested Topics and find one from frequent contributor and vacuum-adjacent enthusiast Rikki-Tikki-Deadly.

All this note says is “sequels”…

And “sequels” is spelled wrong!!!

That may be my fault, but that won’t stop me from blaming Rikki!

Anyway, this week we draft sequels.  What is a sequel? you ask, and to which I reply, what do you care, no one around here follows the goddamn rules anyway.  Nonetheless I swore an oath when I took this job…(takes call from Puerto Rican counsel)

OK, it wasn’t an oath, per se, (phone rings), OK, there was no oath, (phone goes ominously silent, but still somehow en espanol) but whatever, I’ll still throw some rules out.  Slowly.  Using small words.

DFO draft rooms everywhere:

No.  Pay attention.  Let’s say someone writes something.  Or films something.  Or does something.  Literally anything, they do a first of that thing one time.  That thing, the first thing they did, is not eligible.

BUT, then they do that first thing again, but maybe they do it a little differently.  And maybe they change the title.  Could be a little, could be a lot.  Maybe it’s just the same title, but with a ‘2’ in front of it.  That one you can draft.

Also doesn’t just have to be the second one in a series, you can draft any movie/film/event that is based on or otherwise relies on an original one which, again, you cannot draft.

You can also, at the risk of blowing your minds, can draft a prequel if you want, if it was made after the initiating project.  I’m think here specifically of the ‘Star Wars’ prequels, although why you’d want to draft any of those hunks of crap is beyond me.  The point is you can if you want to.

But you shouldn’t.  That’s unsigned free agent talent right there, that’s what that is.

OK, I’ve been writing this for 12 whole minutes and RTD has rudely not gotten back to me about the message I sent him 13 minutes ago.  He does have the first pick, so I will put this on ice for now.  I’ll try to remember to check in before going to bed, (this will almost certainly not happen), and update as appropriate.

The rest of you are on the clock.

Coming here stupidly late to take Odyssey. Because it was written after the Iliad so it counts.

I’m sitting in a very nice cafe on Lincoln Square in Gettysburg PA, eating a General Meade burger with Hancock sauce and Buford fries. Dessert will be a Big Round Top of homemade vanilla ice cream with seasonal fruit (I avoided the Pop-Sickles for obvious reasons).

In the meantime, here’s a photo of “The Wheat Field” at the left end of the Army of the Potomac’s line on July 2nd, 1863:

For dessert I went with 2 scoops of Sedgwick Sorbet and a Pleasanton Punch .

Another that seems to get unfairly shit on. This is my favorite of the trilogy. It’s also my fave trilogy-trilogy. Hoverboards, flying cars, and the Cubs beating the Miami… Gators(?) in the 2015 World Series; what more can you reasonably ask for?

yeah right

The Raid 2.

Both it and Redemption were balls out insane.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

That’s still on my “must watch” list.

yeah right

It most definitely should be.

ballsofsteelandfury

The Cleveland Browns are the most Cleveland Browns team in the history of Cleveland Browns teams..

Jesus! To the Rams?!? For basically nothing?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

They’re getting a first, a second, and a third round pick plus the 2024 Defensive ROTY. That’s not nothing. Garrett can’t save them from sucking next year and he’s expensive, might as well save some money and collect a few assets while his value is high and try to rebuild properly.

WCS

It’s still #ThePauls. They’ll use the first round pick on Johnny Manziel, and trade the others for a hot dog and bottle of Popov vodka.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

This is true. But on paper it’s not the worst trade ever, not by a long stretch.

Brick Meathook

The greatest sequel of all time is:

Son of Kong (1933)

It opens with producer Carl Denham hiding out in a NYC boarding house avoiding all the process servers with subpoenas for all the damage that King Kong caused. The sea captain helps him escape to the tropics, they watch an all-monkey orchestra in an island nightclub, and then they find the Son of Kong, but surprisingly no Mrs. Kong.

Released by RKO nine months after the original, made by the original production team, with most of the same cast. Stop-motion animator Willis O’Brien based Kong Jr’s fight scenes on professional wrestling moves.

This one gets a lot of weird hate, and I’ve never understood why. No, it’s not as iconic as the original, but, it’s tons of fun. It has a dancing toaster!

Brocky

I mean is it really that weird that its hated? They toned it down and made it more kid friendly

WCS

Read the reviews, both critic and fans.
It has definitely warmed over time, but it was shit on throughout the ’90s. It got a one-star rating from TV Guide.

Ya gotta include this in the picks just for the name. Squeakquel? That’ll never be equaled.

Can’t believe it’s still on the board, so I’ll take Backdoor Sluts 9

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

That’s barely even a sequel, it’s just a random collection of references to the original eight and some extremely questionable retcons.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Your Terminator take disqualifies you from being taken seriously on this matter

Yes, Skynet? This guy right here. Yeah, he goes by the online handle BrettFavresColonoscopy but his real name is John Connor.

Don T

El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha Parte II, by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the second best book ever written. (The best? Parte I, although the majority of folks prefer Parte II because ther morans). The first Don Quijote was a global hit back in the early 1600s and multiple Don Q books emerged by lesser authors. One of them got too popular for Cervantes and he decided to write Parte II, and the prologue flat out says that Don Q gets killed off. Now THAT is how you do spite.
Man of La Mancha? Does not exist, refuse to acknowledge it.

Don T

Goddammit, it sings even in English translation. This is the end of the Prologue in Part II:

Say no more to him [the author poacher], and I do not wish to say more to you except to tell you to consider that this second part of Don Quixote, which I offer to you now, is cut by the same artisan and from the same cloth as the first, and in it I give you a somewhat expanded Don Quixote who is, at the end, dead and buried, so that no one will dare tell more tales about him, for the ones told in the past are enough, and it is also enough that an honorable man has recounted his clever follies and does not want to take them up again; for abundance, even of things that are good, makes people esteem them less, and scarcity, even of bad things, lends a certain value.

NotShogunButShogun

This presidency. It really is blowing the original out of the water. Nothing else in the water, but still.

SonOfSpam

Holy shit, Myles Garrett to RAMMMMMIT for Jared Verse, a 1st round pick, and other assorted stuff.

Again I say…HOLY SHIT.

What is this a sequel to? The Micah Parsons trade?

SonOfSpam

Obviously, it’s impossible to match the first one, which is one of the greatest movies of all time. But the sequel was still delightful.

Army of Darkness

Brocky

Excellent choice!

I have such mixed feelings on evil dead 2, because its basically half remake half sequel, but still, the way army darkness fully commits to the slapstick puts it over the top

BrettFavresColonoscopy

This feels like a good time to take Book of Shadows (Blair Witch 2). Can’t believe it’s still on the board.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

2. The Dark Knight.

Brocky

I stole a batman sequel from you, you stole a batman sequel from me.

Fair play,my friend

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I never even knew there *was* a third trilogy. I quite enjoyed the first one, and I seem to remember liking the second one even better because – especially the second book – it was like The Empire Strikes Back. Just more and more bad times for the protagonists that set up some pretty satistfying victories.

[goes full Renfrow]

Like when Honninscrave is chained up in the dungeon repeatedly gathering himself and lunging against his chains, then the bracket fastening the chain to the stone wall breaks and swings out and breaks that asshole wizard’s neck, and you’re like “Ha! Suck it you stupid piece of shit!” and then he comes back to fucking life and it’s like, man, can’t the good guys even get one single win?

SonOfSpam

Book of Shadows (Blair Witch 2), which should prob be the judge for this draft, but its my pick. The ratings for this movie are brutal.

Mad Max Fury Road.

Decades later and crushed the sequel.

I don’t know if I’d say ‘crushed’. The Road Warrior is pretty good, even 40 years later.

I’ll take aliens

You dont want to take Book VII of The Dark Tower, which is twice as long as Book VI?

I put in my hold for it this morning and just laughed at the length. Of course it’s all only just now beginning.

Brocky

Lol I never finished dark tower because of how absurdly long the series became.

According to friends, I never missed much

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Also @blax when King tells you to stop reading at the very end even though there’s a few pages left, take his advice.

blaxabbath

I’m so excited to drive through this thing. I’ve eaten so much shit in my life that seeing through the story of the first books I very much enjoyed is pretty white bread, especially when you know to not have hope. I hope it’s just King punishing the readers who prayed for him to survive long enough to have to deal with the *SOS-style arm waving around ‘all that’* of his sobriety challenges. I feel very tee’d up to get to the end of this and it’s just like, “yo, I’d do that FIFA-pricing shit with my books if they’d let me. Go to hell.”

It’s not, though. It’s close, I’ll give it that, but the original will always be king.
