Greetings from a smoke tinged L.A. County!
Yeah, there’s another big goddamn fire burning north of here. It’s a strange colored sky, overcast but not with marine layer, more burnt orange.
UPDATE: At 4:00 this afternoon this is what it looked like from my back balcony.
The fire is in Santa Clarita and has burned over 11,000 acres since yesterday afternoon and is 10% contained. One of the drawbacks to living in SoCal.
Anyway, this weekend is baseball’s Hall of Fame Induction Weekend. Today they will be presenting the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting to Graham McNamee who I honestly don’t really know anything about. If you want to question the validity of the inductions all you have to do is notice that they are giving Dan Shaughnessey the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for writing. Yeah, fucking Shaughnessey, I guess if you throw enough shit at the wall eventually something sticks.
Jesus, fucking Shaughnessey.
The big induction(s) are tomorrow when The Kid, Ken Griffey Jr. is inducted. No questions this fucking guy was one of the best I’ve seen play. On his last go round I saw him play at Dodger Stadium, there was this kid, maybe 8-9 years old who was awestruck to be near Griffey. He was playing long toss during warm ups and I told this kid, “Junior’s a cool guy, go get an autograph.” The kid was a little nervous and didn’t really know about that so I walked down the steps got right up next to the field and addressed Junior “Love and respect, Junior. Love and respect. It’s been an honor and a privilege to watch you play!” He gave me a quick turn of the head, a smile and a nod. I go back to the 8-9 year old kid and say “See! He’s approachable” The kid runs down to The Kid and gets his baseball glove signed by Junior. Very cool.
Tomorrow they will induct Mike Piazza also.
What The Fuck Ever. I don’t see it.
A few years back brother DJ Taj and I made the trip to Cooperstown as any good baseball fan should and it was fucking gorgeous. We tied the trip in with a couple of games at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park AKA the best stadium in baseball.
Here’s a shot of the Roberto Clemente Bridge walking in.
After Pittsburgh we flew into Syracuse and drove to Cooperstown. Guys? It’s like a really long drive. Beautiful but really long across Upstate New York. When you get to Cooperstown it’s as incredible a town as you will ever see. Drop dead gorgeous. I would retire there if it didn’t turn into the South Fucking Pole during the winter.
The Hall itself is almost church like. Here are the original 5.
That’s pretty much the Hall right there. The baseball museum though, that’s the shit. They’ve got everything.
Here’s Lou Gehrig’s locker.
Here’s Ernie Banks stuff.
Each team has an area to appease all fans.
Easily for me the highlight of Cooperstown was this place.
The Yum Yum Shack! Best goddamn clam strips EVER!!!!
After visiting the Hall we drove back to Syracuse for one last trip highlight.
Dinosaur Barbecue!
I’m obviously a food guy.
So there! A regular goddamn itinerary for the Hall of Fame.
Go Visit. Eat! Drink! Go in the spring or fall.
This thread is officially OPEN!
I’m going to get some work at the gym, then I’m making a 40 mile round trip to get a key ingredient for next week’s Sunday Gravy then there’s this Creole place in Mid City I’ve been meaning to visit.
Get after it peoples!
I finally did the free upgrade to Windows 10 a couple days ago because there was only a few days left to do it for free, is there any way to turn off notifications about the internet “going down” when it doesn’t (or really it updates me that my printer that works if I want it to is down every 15 min with a notification and a noise) . Turning off all notifications works, turning off network notifications does not.
I keep going to reddit because I’m masochistic and I can’t stand just the boring and dead-eyed nature of Google News to catch up on the world, but it proved useful today. I read that Behavioral Activation has proven to be even more effective than Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is interesting because I’ve been half-assing CBT for the last six months and I feel pretty good. If BA works even better with less work, then who knows, maybe it’s for me after all. This is based on a study submitted to The Lancet — which I’m still suspicious of since it originally published Andrew Wakefield’s “research,” but OTOH, the safest airline to fly is the one that just suffered a crash. Except for Malaysian Air. 😐 But I digress.
I’ve also been recommended DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) or ACT (Acceptance and commitment therapy), but anyway, some new information to look into after this week.
I’m a child for laughing at banana innuendo, but fuck it. https://imgur.com/gallery/vZmrH
???
As a fan of repartee, I agree
Hey
Mornin there, sunshine.
It’s still evening. The sun only went down an hour ago.
It’s pushing 2 AM on my coast.
Ugh.
I just took a nice stroll. I guess it was nice to be around people having a good time. It didn’t feel good at the time, but it does now that I’m looking at things more rationally.
I usually like to go take a walk on my lunch break but it’s for the opposite reason. I found a little half-assed park that doesn’t close at night so I can go see some trees and water and nature for a few minutes instead of the inside of my office and other people.
What’s the deal with clapping, anyway? Am I supposed to be impressed that you have fine motor control and working ears?
It’s almost Sunday.
I may have to go Live here.
You gave me a whole day to rant!
Ain’t you learned nothing!?!
Yeah fuck it, Sunday Gravy going live..
in 3…2..

Wifey just had her first real “baby blues” moments. That was utterly terrifying.

Yikes! I am sorry to hear of it, though likely quite overdue by now.
How is she now?
She’ll get better.
Parenthood ain’t easy.
Not by a damn site.
She’ll be fine.
It will all get back to normal in about 19 years.
Bah, child rearing is simple.
Crows and Old 97’s would be a damn good show.
I would pay to see that.
Yup. I heard Robinson’s new(ish) band isn’t so hot though. I’m kinda surprised he hasn’t completely lost his shit yet. I heard an interview with Todd Snider a couple years ago and he said Chris eats assorted hallucinogens pretty much all day every day.
I’d like to give a hearty FUCK YOU to rental car companies
This needs it’s own post.
You can do it!!
Watching the South Park where Cartman leads the Confederacy in the Civil War reenactment.
Turn this up and go full screen.
My eyes are wide open.
Nothing is grounded right now.
Has trump used “Fortunate Son” on his campaign yet?
Jumping from CCR to other bands with contentious breakups…
The Band- The Shape I’m In
https://youtu.be/aXXmJwcAmso
Ok, got an idea here and since it’s dead around these parts, I’m gonna entertain myself. “The Shape I’m In” was sung by Richard Manuel, who was the subject of the Drive-By Truckers song Danko/Manuel.
https://youtu.be/3KSaXdG0ML4
The writer of that song, Jason Isbell, had a contentious split with the Truckers because he couldn’t get his drinking under control amongst other reasons. He has since had a stellar solo career with songs like Codeine.
https://youtu.be/4V_vBPaI1d0
Isbell was helped into sobriety by his close friend Ryan Adams who has had a successful career as a solo artist…

…after his contentious split with his former band, Whiskeytown.
https://youtu.be/vT43nU0RY7M
All of these artists/bands have been influenced by the band mostly credited with launching the alt-country movement in the early 90’s, Uncle Tupelo.
https://youtu.be/t7CGkuLEs5U
Uncle Tupelo split up when co-founder/co-bandleader Jay Farrar left the group. He went on to form the kick-ass band Son Volt.
https://youtu.be/_GHpqrSnXos
The other co-founder and other members of UT stayed together but changed their name and the direction of their music. And that would be Jeff Tweedy and Wilco.

End of story.
Very well done!
Thanks. Sites kinda slow so I thought I’d run with it.
They had some great covers too. CCR- Midnight Special

This was me railing against the war in Viet Nam.
I think we found a theme.
For me at least.
Creedence Clearwater Revival: Lookin’ Out My Back Door

Harumph
Here is my bastardized version of a Dark and Stormy: Get out your little plastic tub of Margarita salt and put 2 Tablespoons or so in the lid. Add an equal amount of turbinado sugar and mix together with a fork. Rub a lime wedge around three quarters of the rim of a tall glass and into the salt/sugar mix to coat. (The gap leaves a spot to start drinking with out getting an overload of salt/sugar.) Fill a tall glass with good ice and squeeze the lime wedge then drop it on the ice. Two fingers Cruzan Black Strap Rum and fill with Royal Jamaican Ginger Beer. Enjoy!

Variation: When I first made Dark and Stormys for The Lady she would scrunch-up her face and say “It’s sooo bitter!” After some experimentation (Hey now!) we determined that the bitter she was so sensitive too was from the oils in the peel/pith not the needed lime juice. The eventual solution was to geeeently squeeze the lime wedge then discard and add a splash of Cruzan Vanilla Rum (SO DAMN SWEET!) Enjoy!
Confession: I have begun to add the sweet stuff to my drank too.
Sounds delightful.
I think it’s time for a shot.
SHOTS!
Black rum shots can lead one down a long and dangerous path … A DARK AND STORMY ROAD !!!!11!!1! GET IT!?!!1?

Tonight I’m gonna ride the Bulleit.

Love Bulleitt too much. I have a fifth of the ten year old on my shelf and have plans to crack it open to start the NFL season.
Oooooh, not big on dark and stormys, but Cruzan Black Strap is good shit. Two fingers isn’t cutting it though.
Baja Oklahoma – Lesley Ann Warren – Willie Nelson

I love this band.
Me too. Wish they loved each other more.
I think Fogarty and Brian Wilson should form a band called Fuck Our Awful Families.
John Fogerty? Or his brother?
I think people tend to forget that John Fogerty was his own worse enemy. The dude basically decided to handle all the band’s contract negotiations on his own and then blamed everyone around him for not stopping him. He cost his bandmates millions.
Heck one of the big reasons they are so popular, even today, is that using their music in films is super cheap because Fogerty sold the rights next to nothing. He literally gave the shitty record company Fantasy Records, more than what they even wanted (which came to a hilarious head when Fantasy Record sued Fogerty for plagiarizing himself).
Yeah, but John wrote all the music. He may have been a shitty businessman, but it was his music. CCR wasn’t famous because Tom Fogerty was a musical virtuoso. It was because of John’s songwriting and voice, plain and simple. It’s hard to say that he cost them millions when he’s the only reason they had a dime in the first place.
