Sharkbaits Cocktail of the Week: Outsourcing

Hey and welcome to Friday! This week I’m outsourcing the cocktail of the week to a local Italian place Mrs. Sharkbait and I went to last night as part of our date night. It was a bourbon based drink called “Red Sweater” It’s definitely holiday themed given the name and the ingredients (I’ll get to those in a minute), but we’re holiday adjacent enough still so I figured I’d go for it and see how it was:

Red Sweater

Bourbon

Home made ginger elixir

Cranberry

Lemon

Candied Ginger for garnish

The home made ginger elixir sounded intriguing as I think the flavors would work very well all together. The addition of the cranberries is what sold me on this being holiday specific. It’s also giving me some ideas to use my cranberries I have sitting in my fridge from the holidays…

Anyway on to the drink itself. It sure looks great. The cranberries give it a nice hue that could be easily dressed up (pardon the pun) to make it look even more festive. The nose here is non-existent. Even with the candied ginger as a garnish, there isn’t anything giving away any kind of aroma.

The first sip is very tart. More than I was expecting to be honest. I’m curios as to the proportions of lemon and cranberry in here. But subsidies fairly quickly. Also the tartness is more intense in the front of the palate, not a sour “back you at the back of the throat” kind of intense. The bourbon absolutely gets lost in the flavors going with this. However the up front tartness from the cranberry and lemon keeps you from downing this too quickly. The finish is a diminished sour/bitter flavors, with some lingering effects on the palate. The latter really makes it a one and done kind of drink. Overall this was good, and I’d be interested in trying to replicate it on my own, and maybe add a little more of a twist to make it mine.

When I read the title I got confused, since I’m usually the outsourcee here.

My music tastes are wild. My ‘Random Ass Music’ playlist will go from Led Zeppelin to Chappell Roan to NWA to Bill Withers to Sinatra to BADBADNOTGOOD to Nirvana/Pearl Jam to Carmina Burana.

Right now? Naz – NY State of Mind just popped up.

listening to one of the playlist’s that litre has shared with me, doing the same head bob, but with less rhythm and much more awkward.

I make a ginger simple sizzzurp by scrubbing & chopping 2-3 inches of ginger root, then simmering it in a solution of half honey or agave / half water for a while.

Then I cool it, add half a teaspoon of vodka (to prevent mold growth) & refrigerate it for use.

Works great in Mexican penicillins. (mezcal, lemon juice & ginger simple)

Is that similar to the “ginger elixer”?

Doktor Zymm

That sounds delicious, I love ginger in drinks

ThePirateSloth

I’m gonna assume this ginger is NOT welcome in your drink

He’s not welcome anywhere.

BeefReeferLives

It’s pretty tasty. If you really love ginger, you would probably want to add more to my recipie.

Also, this is recommended by the Good Mrs. Reefer (also loves ginger):

Today feels like a Saturday, which isn’t a good thing, because it means a) no football and b) I have a bunch of stuff to get done before I can go into proper weekend mode. I’ll be taking the first dose of the shingles vaccine today, so I’ve planned for tomorrow to be a proper day off in case it hits me too hard.

BeefReeferLives

That’s a good plan. YMMV, but the 1st dose of the shingles vax hit me pretty hard. Just felt achy and sick, like a low grade flu.

Horatio Cornblower

The first dose for me wasn’t terrible.

We don’t discuss the second dose.

It does beat actually having shingles, though.

Gumbygirl

Yes, that was my experience too.

yeah right

Exactly right. Don’t remember the first dose and will never forget the 2nd.

BugEyedBoo

Word on the street is that shingles sucks. “Like being burnt with lit cigarettes.”

Gumby had it on his sub. They kept him morphined up, woke him up to tell him our son was born. He said it was as bad as you hear it is.

I’ve got the script for the vaccine, just need to get off my butt and gets it done
