25 Questions! SexiMexi edition!

Good day to you! Usually when drunk I fire many random Mexican queries to Balls. I always get a response even though I know it should be why are you bothering me internet stranger. Instead of drunkenly asking I grouped them in to his usual 25 questions format.

As most of you know I have a futbol addiction (among other things) lucky for me our friend Balls has led me towards the wackiness of SexiMexi futbol and I love it! This started out by asking Balls what the hell is going on in Morelia? I saw that fans were camped out in front of the stadium stopping the club from taking their trophies and moving the team.

1. What the hell is going on in Morelia?
Balls : Basically, the ghost of Robert Irsay has moved to Mexico and is reliving the good old days.  Over the weekend, a whole bunch of moving trucks showed up at the Morelia stadium and started taking things away. The fans got wind of it and a bunch of demonstrations happened.  As was the case with the Colts moving to Indianapolis, it is not because the team was losing money, it’s because ownership is/was greedy.
2. Does moving happen a lot? I heard in the past that my adopted Puebla was threatening to move. Go the Sweet Potatoers! (Seriously that is a nickname).
estadio cuauhtémoc
Balls: Unfortunately, it does.  Actually, Puebla was the team that was slated to move but, as we’ve discussed before, there is way too much history for Puebla FC in Puebla so no way was that team moving.
3. This seems like an NHL type threat that we normally hear in Canadia for stadium deals. Do the board of governors or owners in Mexicao have to approve?
Balls :This one is unique in that there is a stadium in Mazatlan that was built and was ready for a team.  A real “if you build it, they will come” type move.  Undoubtedly, some developers from Mazatlan (which is in Sinaloa btw and oh do you know who in Sinaloa has a lot of money?} got to the Football Federation and told them they would build a state-of-the-art stadium if the league moved a team there.  You can guess what their response was.
Incidentally, this is in keeping with the direction that Liga MX is going in that they may completely eliminate relegation/promotion and follow a MLS-type model.  If you remember, very few teams were eligible to come up this year as there were stadium requirements that needed to be met. And then there was that whole Veracruz fiasco!  To top off everything, there is even talk of an MLS-Liga MX merger.
I also read that teams that were fighting promotion were pissed as it was no longer an option this season.
4. Will they take the name Monarcas with them?
Balls: No, the new team is supposed to be named Mazatlan FC.
I found news about this. Mazatlan must pay to change the name and move office.
5. Is Morelia the seat of Mexican royalty back in the day?
Balls : Morelia has, as most Mexican cities do, a complicated history.  It was originally called Valladolid after the city in Spain where the city’s founder was from and now the home of Real Valladolid in La Liga. It was a big royalist stronghold but after the War of Independence, it was renamed Morelia after Morelos, a war hero.  The Spanish influence remained, however, which is why the city’s flag is red and yello, just like the uniforms of Monarcas.  The Monarchs referred to in the name of the team are not Mexican monarchs, but Spanish monarchs.
6. After reading on reddit it seems that the supporters of all coloUrs hate the commissioner of the league. What shit has he pulled?
Balls: Well, let’s see…. Proposed merger with MLS, elimination of relegation, blatant corruption in letting teams “buy” their way back into the league, underhanded deals with developers to move teams to other cities with complete disregard for how fans feel…  Nope, nothing to see here, move along.
Oh, here is an article about the Liga’s new rules, and it is on a MLS site, how interesting.
7. Who would have won this year?
Balls: It’s really hard to tell because of the Liguilla system that Liga MX uses.  Last year, Monterrey won the league after barely squeezing into La Liguilla in 8th place.  Any of the top 12 teams could have won.
So you are saying there’s a chance for Puebla.
8. Who would have finished in the basement?
Balls: Well, Veracruz is no longer in the league, so not them.  Possibly one of the newly-risen teams.  However, that really may have been pointless as I don’t think anyone was going to get relegated.
9. Would they have been relegated or tried to buy their way out? This system confuses the hell out of me.
Balls: Maybe?  I really think they were going to do away with relegation.  It’s becoming a league of the Haves and a Closed Shop.  The system is confusing right now because it’s moving in one direction while pretending it’s not.
10. Why has the Frenchman Gignac stayed there so long and why is he so fucking loved?
Balls: Gignac is a National Hero.  He really is one of the best things to happen to Liga MX.  He is loved in Nuevo Leon because he wears his heart on his sleeve and does everything for the team.  Think Eric Cantona in Manchester United.
11. I have been watching Taco Chronicles on Netflix, what style is your favoUrite?
Balls: I’m not familiar with that show, but I will definitely check it out.  I will always gauge the worthiness of a taco stand by their Al Pastor tacos.  If they are not good, they should not bother putting them on the menu.
12. Is now the time for me to buy a Morelia jersey on DHGate for a souvenir?
Balls: Yes, it is!
13. Who should I put on the back of it?
Balls: Nobody on the current squad deserves to be on your back. Marco Antonio Figueroa, a Chilean player, is the team’s all-time leading scorer.
14. Did you know that Mexican wine country is up-incoming? Great stuff coming out of Baja and Sonora. (If you ever want a booze exchange I am in)
Balls : Oh yes!  The Baja wine country is located in a triangle between Tijuana, Ensenada, and San Felipe.  Their stuff has just recently been recognized.  I’m not sure about Sonora.  I used to live there and I can tell you it’s mostly desert.  There are some hilly/mountaneous areas in the north, so maybe that’s where it’s from?
Obviously hot climate grapes. I am very intrigued in this list.
15. What is  Rompope? It is the # 2 booze apparently as per world liquor guide.
Balls: Rompope is the milk that comes out of Pamela Anderson’s pre-surgery boobies. To compare it to eggnog is a sacrilege and in no way accurate.  But people do.  There are two main brands:  Coronado and Santa Clara.  I find Coronado to be a bit boozier than Santa Clara.  They’re both creamy liqueurs made with eggs, milk, and vanilla. Santa Clara also makes a flavour using almonds.
16. How big is the Mexico City subway system? As I did research on Puebla for a future trip the subway goes all the way out there?
Balls: It’s big because Mexico City is big. It’s actually the second-biggest system in North America after New York.  It doesn’t really go to Puebla, although you can connect to a commuter train that will take you there.
17. This is a lot of questions, I don’t know how you routinely do this. Do you prefer the split season or 1 season in futbol? The Canadian league just changed from split season to 1 whole season and I prefer it.
Balls: This may seem like sacrilege, but I think the split season system makes the season more exciting.  Everyone has a chance to regroup quickly after a bad campaign.  There is also a bigger sense of urgency and wins/losses are more important.
18. I know you were aware of it real time but did you watch the Maradona in Mexico documentary?
Balls : I still haven’t.  I am a bad Mexican.
19. Any subtitled or dubbed Netflix recommendations for me? The Barca doco was basically a promotional video.
Balls: Nothing soccer-related, but I did enjoy “A Very Secret Service” which was recommended by Scotchy and is great.  It’s in French and I watched it with French subtitles in the original French so I could try to get some of my French back.  I also recommend “Ocho Apellidos Vascos” and “Ocho Apellidos Catalanes” which in Netflix are called “A Spanish Affair” and “A Spanish Affair 2”.  They’re great Spanish comedies.
20. Speaking of recommendations, did you listen to “What went Down” – Foals yet?

Balls: Yes, yes I did.  Excellent stuff!

21. Have you missed any shows due to ‘Rona?

Balls: I’ve stopped going to concerts.  The last one I went to was probably about ten years ago.  The last concert I saw was the Cure show you and I watched in the early morning over the Internet from Sydney.

22. Vegas is supposed to open in June, is that a bad idea or the worst idea? (I have a wedding to go to)

Balls: The absolute worst. However, it means we get to see Darwin in action.

23. Did you catch their mayor on the news saying she wanted to be a test site? She seems insane.

Balls: First of all, that’s hilarious because the Strip is not within the city limits of “Las Vegas”.  It’s in a city called “Paradise”.  The only thing within the city of Las Vegas is Fremont Street.  Trust me, COVID-19 is the least dangerous disease you can catch on Fremont Street.

24. Do you think the NFL will start in Sept or will the civil war/Rona push that back?

Balls: Goodell will make the NFL a test site.  They’ll play.

25. Lastly, fave Mexican destination and why?

It’s gotta be Cancun.  The water is warm, the beaches are gorgeous, and the nightlife is legendary.  If you’re young, go there at least three times in your life.  If you’re older, you can go to the resorts to the south along the Riviera Maya and enjoy all the same sights without someone jamming a shot of tequila down your throat and shaking your head all around.  Unless you’re into that.

Thanks! I will continue to pester you with questions about Mexico. Especially when I start to plan my trip to Mexico City and Puebla whenever the hell that happens now.
Eh why not?

WHOA HOLD ON ONE SECOND HERE

I’ve never heard of an “al pastor” taco and I just looked it up and that is amazing. It’s like a “Zankou Taco.”

Where in Los Angeles can I get one of these? The best one?

ALXMAC

Angel’s Tijuana Taco

The King Taco ones are pretty good. For a chain, although it’s local and family owned, their recipes are very authentic.

Individual taco stands can also produce some hidden gems but it’s trial and error. It depends on the cook and their recipe.

Now you’ve done it. All I can think of is Zankou chicken with the garlic sauce. I can be in Pasadena in an hour or so if I fly down the mountain driving with reckless abandon!

Brick Meathook

The best Zankou Chicken is on Sunset at Normandie.

Gumbygirl

I’ve only been to the one in Pasadena, but next time I go to LA I’ll try that one, thanks for the tip!

Brick Meathook

Sunset is the original. Zankou Chicken is actually Armenian (via Beirut) and the garlic paste is key. It’s like nowhere else. Zankou has an interesting back story.

Gumbygirl

I used to live in Birmingham, and there are a ton of Lebanese restaurants there, so I love me some toum! I tried making it myself, but it was an epic fail. Seems like it should be easy, only a few ingredients, but it’s tricky as hell.

ballsofsteelandfury

Pasadena Zankou is awesome! It is dangerously close to me.

Brick Meathook

There are 12 Zankou Chickens. 8 are run by one set of cousins, and 4 are run by a different set of cousins, all from the same family. They refuse to do business with each other, after a big inheritance fight after the founder killed his wife and then his mother and then himself. The mother was the one who “invented” the Zankou garlic paste, which was her specialty back in Beirut. That’s why the locations are, to me, slightly different.

Gumbygirl

I thought my family was fucked up!

ballsofsteelandfury

One website lists 9 locations.
The other lists 3 locations.

Brick’s favourite is one of the 3…
Pasadena’s is one of the 9…

Brick Meathook

Ha ha I wonder if one of them defected

Brick Meathook

I just read about it. The Hollywood one is the original and I’m telling you it’s the best one. The others are good (I’ve been to West LA and Van Nuys) but I always noticed it just wasn’t quite the same. The others have the blood of the mother and sister in their garlic sauce, while the Hollywood location has the angelic guidance of the victim’s ghosts. It’s real Armenian shit.

SonOfSpam

Still trying to get past the idea that a SoCal guy has never heard of “al pastor”

I’m whiter than Powder and I’ve had those.

Brick Meathook

I never order tacos, unless they’re fish tacos, and even those have to be done right. The first (and best) one I ever had was in San Diego ( I can’t remember, Pacific Beach somewhere). The best in Los Angeles I’ve had is at El Original 7 Mares on Sunset @ Descano in Silver Lake.

I just searched on the website menus of all the Mexican restaurants in Santa Monica/Venice and Playa del Rey and even Fullerton that I’ve been to and not of them has the words “al pastor” in them. So it must be a regional Mexican thing because these were all authentic family owned restaurants.

But I am going to find me an “al pastor” taco now that I know what it is. I looked at the King Taco menu and “al pastor” is all over it. I think I would have noticed this if I had seen it before, or an autodoner in the kitchen.
