Request Line: Gone, But Not Forgotten

Earlier this week Don T served up a touching tribute to our dear departed friend the Wee Baby Seamus.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: nobody contributed more to Request Line than tWBS did.  Whether it was filling in for me when I couldn’t get my shit together, or just contributing his heart out every week, the man clearly had a lot of music in his heart.  And like many great rock stars, he lived fast, loved hard, and died (relatively) young.  So I thought in tribute to a year since his passing, today’s topic would be a pretty simple one: artists who left the stage tragically early.  I’ll get us started with one of the most talented (and troubled) young women who ever stepped in front of a microphone.

Kinda sad that he passed without having received any acclaim.

Ric Ocasek went pretty recently, but Ben Orr’s death was way too early.

The real talent behind The Cars, imo. Check out this live version of Bye Bye Love back in ’79-if only for Redshirt playing the synthesizer. Is he a time-travelling shapeshifter? The question remains open.

I was (re)watching some of their performances from “Midnight Special” & “Fridays” recently. Damn, they were good. Ben especially.

Horatio Cornblower

Apparently Ocasek met Paulina Porzikova when he was 40 and she 19. Then, after 30 years of marriage, cut her out of his will saying that she’d abandoned him, despite the fact that they were still living in the same apartment and that she found him dead while bringing him coffee.

Ocasek sounds like kind of a dick.

SonOfSpam

Didn’t realize the age difference. Yeah, definitely an asshole.

Best post-Beatles Lennon song? MAYBE.

Does my old high school girlfriend’s awesome butt recall being squeezed by me (while slow-dancing back then) when this song plays now? MAYBE.

Chrissy is still kickin it, but pretty much the rest of the original band wasted no time killing themselves.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H6re3PCP3E

Yeah, those first two albums were so great,

Just saw her a few years ago, and the drummer is still touring with her.

Another drummer gone too soon!

Yep, way too young whatever the age.

SonOfSpam

True, but it was stupid fucking brain cancer, and he coulda gone another 5-19 years.

I guess a 40 year career ain’t bad though.

When I heard MCA passed I felt like I’d been ambushed-never saw it coming and it hurt quite a bit.

INXS holds up incredibly well, especially when you consider how much “pop appeal” they had.

Horatio Cornblower

Too bad the pole in the closet also held up well.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Seems like they’re every fourth song on First Wave.

And maybe some Keef Richards

Trent Reznor, who actually did a collaboUration recently that wasn’t total shit (unlike everything else he’s done post-needle)

ah will not have you speak ill of mah precious opium, good sir!

BeefReeferLives

Hey, I’m fine with the poppy. Putting it in a form where people shoot it and then die of sepsis of the heart is not so great, however…

BeefReeferLives

BTW, you’ve prolly already read this, but I thought of you when I came across it. Makes me wish I had a backyard…
