Under Canadian law, the date is reserved in anniversary of the birth of the monarch. A national commemoration dating from the time of Queen Victoria, whose birthday was May 24, 1819, an amendment to the Statutes of Canada in 1952 established the celebration of Victoria Day on the Monday preceding May 25. In Quebec, Victoria Day has been known as Journée nationale des patriotes since 2002, which commemorates the struggle of Louis-David Papineau and his patriotes to establish “Responsible Government” in Lower Canada. It replaced a holiday called Fête de Dollard in 2003, which had replaced Victoria Day in 1918.
In 1957, Victoria Day was permanently appointed as the Queen’s birthday in Canada. In the United Kingdom, the Queen’s birthday is celebrated in June. Her actual birthday is April 21. The Royal Union Flag, commonly known as the “Union Jack”, where physical arrangements allow, is flown along with the National Flag at federal buildings, airports, military bases and other federal buildings and establishments within Canada, from sunrise to sunset, to mark this day. Most “physical arrangements” are “curiously absent” outside of Montreal.
Whatever – it’s the unofficial start of summer in Canada, meaning it’s officially tolerable to talk about fucking off to a cabin/lake/golf resort on weekends and not feel like an elitist dick. After Labour Day, you’re a snob again.
