Oh hey, it’s 11:39 pm on a Sunday night and I just remembered I need to have one of these up and running tomorrow. I took tomorrow off so I could help a friend saw holes in our ceiling and put in an attic entryway that won’t cause kill or maim anyone trying to pull the ladder down, because that is decidedly not the case with the ladder we put in 20+ years ago. Also it’s my birthday and no one should work on their birthday. You all owe me a gift.
So based on the open thread we’re currently in, (authored by the estimable Don T), I was reminded that a topic I’d been hoarding, comedy films, was till available. Rikki’s going on about comedy/sci-fi films, which would be an excellent topic if it didn’t run out at about 10 picks, so we’re just going to do comedy films.
Anyway, to qualify the film has to be an intentional comedy. ‘Sophie’s Choice’ doesn’t count; seriously, anyone who’s had more than one kid knows there’s an easy choice to be made. Don’t kid yourself otherwise.
With the first pick, and keeping with tradition, I will take ‘Kelly’s Heroes’, which qualifies as a war film, a heist film, and a comedy, because parts of it are very funny. Also it means Sharkbait can’t draft it, which is half the fun.
There will be no commissioner. Frankly we’ll be lucky if I roll in much before noon.
The rest of you are on the clock.
Up in Smoke.
“You get a job before sundown or I’m shipping you off to military school with that goddamn Finkelstein shit kid. Son of a bitch!”
I’ll take Idiocracy, even though it was basically a documentary
Yeah, I’m not sure I can even allow that as a comedy anymore.
“I’ll take MacGruber!” – Tua Tagovailoa, making his second pick
3rd: The Waterboy
The Blues Brothers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgzMNQjQVHk
5. Need an animated film, and it really couldn’t be anything else.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzBuWOZGcuc
That’s Beavis and Butt-head Do America if you’re ctrl-F’ing
“I’ll take MacGruber!” – Tua Tagovailoa, making his first pick
And because I have to run to the bank I’ll pick again. It won’t be popular but “Sleeper” by Woody Allen made young me snort several times.
“made young me snort several times.”
Hey, no one put that rolled up bill in your nose but you, young man.
That movie was hilarious. Great pick.
After realizing he’s in the future: “This is worse than California” 😆
A Fish Called Wanda
Kevin Kline at his psychotic best
“How about a blow job?”
/Picking Repo Man
“Nice friends.”
“Thanks, I made ’em myself”
4. Since BeefReefer beat me to Dr. Strangelove, I’ll take Clue.
Slight reach based on strong demand from others in the clubhouse. Also:
/
Bachelor Party.
v
Or “Woman of the Year” classic comedy featuring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn which includes the Miss Hepburn trying to make toast bit.
Probably should have emphasized “wait 10 picks or 30 minutes before making your next pick” up there in the post, but in my defense that 12.5% beer from Snow hit me like a freight train.
Also I’m fairly confident no one else was picking that.
I share your confidence that it will be available in 10 picks or 30 minutes, whichever comes first.
Also I don’t really care. I’m just killing time until my friend gets here and we put the new attic ladder in. He’ll be here at 11, I’m told, but since it’s currently 11:16 I am beginning to have my doubts.

Speak for yourself.
Easy, I’ll take the brilliant satire masterpiece by the greatest director (Billy Wilder) who ever lived and it’s got some classic Marilyn Monroe laughs. “Some like it Hot”.
Dr. Strangelove. A dark comedy, but a great one.
DAMMIT
Get here late, nearly get your arms claimed by the subway, miss a lot. Let’s see, Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles, and Eurotrip are off the board, and I know I’ve got some value later on…
It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
4. Need to round out my roster a little bit, so I’ll go with horror-comedy here and take Army of Darkness.
Euro trip
Since I Blair Witched myself I’ll take Trading Places.
Added bonus, peak Jamie Lee Curtis
Coming to America
Vacation.
Blades of Glory.
Caddyshack is still on the board? Yoink!
Yup, Blair Witch is a great choice!
I think you shanked that one, Blair
I am kind of hungover. Probably scrolled right by it.
Since it’s my birthday I’m keeping the pick.
“THAT’S GREAT HUSTLE!”
/slaps Horatio on the ass. Hard.
Happy Birthday
2. Fletch
3. Office Space.
#3: Slapshot
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zM6Na3cZz8
Road Trip
#2 – The Big Lebowski
Super Troopers (I traded up in the second so i don’t have to waste time waiting).
Strong pick
3rd pick, as I am then done for the picks:
Ice Pirates
Balls has a similarly named third favorite film
It doesn’t count as a movie, but are the 2022-23 Ice P*ts on the board?
Pick 2: Spaceballs
“She’s gone from ‘Suck’ to ‘Blow.’”
Stripes.
Dumb and Dumber.
https://youtu.be/KsalCdGMHO8
2. Austin Powers: international man of mystery
2. The Naked Gun.
Pick 2: This is Spinal Tap
Wayne’s World.
“It’s sucking my will to live.”
Draft picks are going off the board faster than the brisket when Andy Reid settles in at his favorite BBQ joint.
1st: Caddyshack
Hot Fuzz, no worse than my third-fave movie.
2 – Monty Python and the Holy Grail
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgj3nZWtOfA
1. Ghostbusters. There are probably stronger first round picks, but things are happening fast in this draft and I’m panicking.
Also I got drunk as a lord last night (“I heard you singing” – Dr. Mrs. Deadly) and I’m definitely not at my sharpest.
#1 – Better Off Dead
Do you know what the street value of this mountain is??
Excellent pick
$2!
Pick #2 is Animal House.
Airplane!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE12zeIyPx0
Sorry, Blair Witch is not a comedy
I forgot to refresh before I made my pick. Sorry, then Monty Python Life of Brian.
Are there any women here?
Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.
It is hysterical, quotable, and the scene with the sketches of them on the news was always referenced by my Asian and Indian colleagues in finance.
You monster.
Young Frankenstein is my first pick.
So is Horatio the monster or the doctor who created it?
Yes.
Since Blazing Saddles is off the board, I’ll take Airplane!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Blazing Saddles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNTw3x40I0o
Damn, beat me to it.
Strange Brew – Bob and Doug McKenzie
Best version of Hamlet evah!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC6dBsNz0oc
Worthy of the first overall pick!
