Sharkbait’s Cocktail of the Week: Pretty In Pink

Hello and happy Friday yet again. The theme of this week is ‘simplicity’. Mainly because it was a short week and somehow time got away from me. It’s a good thing that I keep a running list of recipes I come across that are easy, either in one of my books or various places online. This week’s recipe comes from the latter source. Of which, I kind of feel a little guilty using. I have a plethora of sources in the books I have but using online sources somewhat seems like a bit of a cop out. I know it isn’t but it kind of feels that way.

Regardless of source, this drink can’t be any easier. It’s called Pink Gin. Because it’s just gin and bitters. The bitters giving it a pink(ish) hue.

2 ounces gin
3 to 4 dashes Angostura Bitters
Lemon twist, for garnish

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes, combine the gin and bitters Stir well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist. Serve and enjoy.

Of note, the gin is from a small batch distiller from Kennebunk Maine. I snagged another bottle of their gin when I was in Portland last week, and thought it would be a good one to use here.

It’s definitely got a good gin aroma going for it. The bitters and the lemon are also quite noticeable here as well and add a nice touch.

With little to no surprise here at all, this drink is strong. I mean it’s literally just gin with a few dashes of bitters. The gin of course is the main attraction and it stands out. All the various plants and herbs that go into this gin are detectable. Though this gin is a bit less on the drier side, which makes sense because it’s not a London Dry gin. One ingedient that surprised me was the addition of the lavender. I think I would have missed some of the aromas and taste had I not looked up what goes into their gin. Knowing that I think I can pick up on some of the additions it brings that say a Gordons or a Beefeater does not have.

I will say the colder you can drink this the better. Chill the glass if you can. Unfortunately my freezer space didn’t allow for that. So it got warmer than I would have preferred, but it didn’t really affect how I felt about this. Of which, I did enjoy. However, I don’t know how often I’ll be going back to this. I do enjoy a good stiff drink, and gin especially. But, I think there is much more that can be done with this. Gin and bitters is a good base, but I think it can be improved upon. In a pinch it will do, but it seems like just the gin and the bitters keeps it too basic.

Now that I got that fucking 3D printer working, I’m going to have my son make me one of these cocktails.

More LA history:

If you want to truly understand how and why Los Angeles is the way it is, you need to read about Henry E. Huntington.

Another fun LA history fact:

LA used to have casino ships offshore. I first heard of these reading Raymond Chandler, but his fiction was based on fact:

HBO’s Perry Mason S2 had casino ships as part of the plot.

Can someone please explain to me why I’m suddenly hearing about something called “Bluesky” everywhere now?

BeefReeferLives

It’s an alternate twitter. Lots of people are flocking there since Elmo has turned Twitter into a nazi bar.

blaxabbath

The bowling alley has PTI on one of the channels.

Pathetic.

Horatio Cornblower

The bowling alley seems like the perfect place to watch PTI, in that you can’t hear anything.

Doktor Zymm

I used to drink a martini version of this quite often, so pretty much exactly this but with a bit of dry vermouth as well. Haven’t had that in a while and kind of want one right now, but all my gin is in Chicago. Hmm, how lazy am I feeling this afternoon?

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Did he say why he doesn’t visit?

Since it’s Friday and it’s cocktail day, and since we’re sharing gasoline stories, and since gasoline motor fuel is actually a cocktail of petroleum distillates and additives, here’s a gasoline story:

The map below is El Segundo CA, which is just south of me. The “empty” area in the center is actually a gigantic Chevron refinery that produces something like 5000 gallons of 87 octane gasoline per minute. All of this gasoline goes by pipeline to an enormous terminal at Santa Fe Springs CA where it is continuously loaded into tanker trucks which have a capacity of approximately 8000 gallons each. It is at the trucks where the higher octane additives are added to make premium fuels. The gasoline is then trucked back to El Segundo (and elsewhere) where it is sold at three Chevron retail stations that ring the refinery and have some of the highest gas prices in the area, even though the gasoline was refined just yards away.

https://ibb.co/6gYfK4C

More lore: The refinery was built in 1911 by Standard Oil of California. It was the second refinery in California, after the first one in Richmond CA in the Bay Area, and was named El Segundo, meaning “The Second.” The City of El Segundo grew out of this and took their name from the refinery, and two roads adjacent to it are Richmond Street and Standard Street.

The road on the south side of the refinery is Rosecrans Avenue, a major E-W drag across Los Angeles County which runs from the beach all the way to Fullerton, which is in Orange County, and passes through Norwalk which is just south of Santa Fe Springs. The road is named for General William Rosecrans of Civil War fame. He had a very good career in the war and in California later except for the battle of Chickamauga where he was routed by a rebel army led by Gen. Braxton Bragg (mostly an idiot) and Gen. James Longstreet (mostly not an idiot). Rosecrans was relieved of command by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, and Grant’s later victory at Chattanooga leads to him being given command of the entire Federal Army.

South of Rosecrans is actually Manhattan Beach. Until I saw this very map (taken from a gas price phone app) I had no idea there were neighborhoods called Smoky Hollow and Tree Section.

“Where do you live?”
“I live in Tree Section.”
“Nice. Where the fuck is that?”

https://ibb.co/10pM61F

ballsofsteelandfury

I’m not sure but I’m pretty sure the pipeline runs completely underneath Rosecrans.

Love the history!
It’s nuts that LA had its growth spurt so recently that large chunks of prime beachfront real estate are taken up by an oil refinery and LAX.

Brick Meathook

Both the refinery and the airport are worth many many times more than the adjacent residential areas. Neither one is going anywhere soon.

In fact, when LAX expanded in the 1960s they got rid of already established prime beachfront communities. Look at the area between the runways and the ocean below. That was a prime and wealthy development called Surfridge that was built in the 1920s and removed completely by the early ’60s. It’s all fenced off and only the streets remain today. The L.A. powers that be did this to a wealthy white community using eminent domain, paying top dollar for the first house and then steadily dropping the price in order to cause a sales panic which dropped the prices further, and then paying peanuts to the last hold outs. This is the same thing that was done to Chavez Ravine, Bunker Hill, and most freeway right-of-ways. Chavez Ravine fanboys constantly whine as if they were the only victims but sorry they weren’t, and they were neither first nor last. It is merely “The L.A. Way.”

Also: Most beaches around L.A. were covered with oil derricks until the 1970s, and many are still pumping oil with facilities that are disguised. The ground is toxic, but now developed by expensive houses. This includes Venice Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Huntington Beach, to name a few.

Fun Fact: I live between the two “Playa del Reys.”

For example, Marina Del Rey doesn’t exist yet.

Brick Meathook

I love this map.

When they condemned the land for Marina del Rey in the early ’60s, it was mostly marsh but also some old beachfront mansions, including one once owned by Rudolph Valentino. These sat abandoned for a few years until marina construction began. Venice was kind of a shit-hole back then, with lots of bikers and grunge. American International Pictures was based in Venice and they shot a bunch of biker movies in the abandoned houses. In fact, the Venice Canals were kind of a dump until the late ’80s.

LAX doesn’t exist on this map either. Actually, it was just Mines Field back then, which is now the south runway 25L (greatly expanded and paved). The original terminal is still there, tucked among the cargo terminals. The main airport for L.A. back then was in Glendale, and that terminal building is also still there (minus the runways).

ballsofsteelandfury

Remind me the next time we get together to bring you a copy. I have an extra.

I really need to read more LA history, anyone got book reccs?

ballsofsteelandfury

There are so many LA stories and subcultures that there’s books just about each one of them.

I’d suggest to pick an area/topic and then we could do reccs.

If you’re ever back in LA with some time, I highly recommend a trip to the LA Central Library in DTLA. They have an extensive section on local history.

Doktor Zymm

I’ve been to that library a few times, but never checked out the local history section, will have to do that!

I always do a bunch of reading about the history of a place when I move there, so I’ve got DC, NYC, Chicago, and the Bay Area pretty well covered, but since I’ve never lived in LA I just have a bunch of stuff I’ve picked up from scattered sources. It has had a very different evolution from most cities and I’m very much in a history reading mood recently for some reason so seems like a good time to learn more

Cadillac Desert was also made into a PBS documentary that is seemingly not available anywhere but YouTube. The book is really good and so is the documentary.

Possibly buying my last car ever because by the time it wears out, I will probably not be allowed to drive anyway. Thinking of going with Volvo C60 Ultra as a compact SUV will allow me to take stuff to the dump and for trips. Other than that, I was thinking of looking at Audi as well. Anyone have any really negative experiences with either brand? Rav4 is also on the table but I wanted something a little higher end. And will be going hybrid.

blaxabbath

None.

Hi GumbyGirl!! Hope you are doing as well as possible.

Saw your comment last night about how you are on BlueSky, but needed to figure it out. Here is a guide. I hope it is helpful. (block lists are very helpful, so you don’t have to deal with maga trolls or crypto pushers)

I mean, my consumer gasoline usage is pretty low. So, like you, the plus/minus is…..low priority.

But Biden drove up my food prices so much that I was able to use my Safeway $1/gal savings at the pump almost immediately this month.

That’s why I voted for the couchfucker’s boss.

My local Costco gas price today is $3.77/gal, and that’s always the lowest around here.

I filled up there 3 days ago at @3.90/gal.

https://ibb.co/7zKbfwT

Gumbygirl

I paid $3.89 at Morongo the other day. Anything under 4 bucks seems like a bargain.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

So, I made a cranberry – thyme simple syrup I stole from a reddit old fashioned recipe and am thinking of repurposing it with gin. Maybe gin, the syrup, Cointreau, lime juice? Other thoughts?

BugEyedBoo

I might need to expand my distilled liquor palate, because to me gin tastes like Aqua Velva smells. Not bashing it; I like gin and tonic. But if always end up buying Gordon’s or Beefeater maybe I’m not experiencing the full range of gin flavors.

blaxabbath

Some people just don’t like consuming certain poisons.

I like Hendricks — it doesn’t matter.

BugEyedBoo

And tastes change. The first time I tried scotch I thought it tasted like gasoline. Today, maybe I like gasoline now or something. Not joking, pretty sure this was me drinking Laphroaig for the first time: “Hey, this seaweed and kerosene flavor kind of grows on you.”

ArmedandHammered

Your taste buds die with age. Why do you think so many old people use hot sauce?
