So it’s school vacation this week, so House Sharkbait has been busier than usual with both kids around full time. Thankfully I was able to take a couple days off from work and we decided to head down to the Cape for a longer weekend while the kids were off.
While I like to think the bar at the Cape is well stocked, it’s not as diversely supplied at home so my options for cocktails have been somewhat limited. Mostly the stuff for variations of martinis and the like. I did discover an older bottle of Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur, which sparked some research into using that. I found a recipe for a Casino and went for it. The unfortunate thing is, it turns out after I had finalized my summary of the drink, I discovered I already made this. Granted it was way back in 2023, but still, I’m not one to repeat drinks, but in this case, I’ve got no choice.
Casino
1.5 oz Gin
0.75 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
0.5 oz Lemon Juice
2 dashes Orange Bitters
Luxardo Maraschino Cherries garnish
Lemon Peel garnish
Pour all ingredients into a mixing glass with plenty of ice. Stir until the drink is well-chilled. Strain into a coupe or Nick and Nora glass. Garnish with a Maraschino cherry and lemon peel.
Cherry nose for sure. Been a while since I’ve used luxardo liqueur, forgot how strong it is. I was hoping for a bit more lemon. Maybe it’ll come through in the flavors
It certainly does, though not as much as I’d hoped. It starts out very citrus forward, but the luxardo can’t be held back for too long before it starts to dominate the palate. It’s not terrible, but I think it’s a little much for me.
The dry gin is completely covered by the lemon and the luxardo. If you didn’t tell me gin was in this, I don’t know if I would be able to tell what the base spirit is at work here. Though Im thinking that’s the point. The two powerful flavors in the lemon and the liqueur would be hard to overcome, even with the most formidable bases.
The finish is a combination of lemon and cherry flavors, with a little aftertaste from the lemon, as well as a slight palate coat from the luxardo
While good, I don’t know how often ill come back to this. The cherry liqueur is a bit too strong for me, and the residual flavor is a little too much. It was a good break from having a regular dry martini that I’ve been enjoying recently

Color Commentator: “That’s…interesting for sure. But I would like to note that the little black thing being batted around is made of vulcanized rubber, which is the result of cross-links between polymer chains! Now let’s go to Charles rinkside.”
Sideline Reporter: “Sitting in the third row here, I’d have say that ‘Extraordinary Delusions and The Madness of Crowds’ still remains relevant in the 21st century.”

“Hard to know how the American hockey team’s play is going to be affected, given the recent Supreme Court ruling against Trump.”

In the midst of the gf’s cancer fight, our landlord has said she’s going to jack the rent 300 a month (on top of the usual yearly raping) and double the security deposit. For no reason. No improvements, nada. Bare minimum repairs.
Gf has lived there over 10 years, no problems. I am beyond livid.
Lease renewal? Even so, check in with a local tenant’s rights org to make sure everything is legit
I don’t want to upvote this, but your anger is shared here
Not upvoting the landlord.
Shadow self-portrait of myself on the floor of the “Jaws” exhibit, which is an exhibit devoted to the movie “Jaws.” The shadow you see on the floor is a self-portrait of myself, on the floor of the exhibit about “Jaws,” which is 1975 movie (also known as a “motion picture”).
Interesting. Can you tell us anything about the picture?
Here’s an amazing fact I just learned at the Academy Museum on the famed Miracle Mile in Los Angeles:
Can you believe that? “Movies” and “motion pictures” are the same thing!
So far this museum is boring as fuck. I’m getting my entire coolant system replaced so I came over here to kill time. I think I’d rather kill myself. Or maybe I’d rather go back and watch them replace my water pump.
Did that Finnish player just try a pass off the face-off instead of one-timing it? Or am I drunk on hot chocolate?
I’m voting drunk because I sure am.
Stupid Fins blowing that sure fire win.
Well, that was a gutfull display by them Cauckians.
This tournament has been insane.
It’ll get even more insane if this desperation offsides challenge pays off.
I’m in agreement that Marchand did nothing wrong on that goal, and now I’m questioning everything about my life.
I like Luxardo Maraschino but there are a ton of (other) cocktail snobs who hate it because it can overpower a drink. They tend to recommend Maraska or Lazzaroni, but I haven’t gotten around to trying other given how fucking big the Luxardo bottle is.
“Wilson with Marchand” sounds like something that’s only going to end with the intervention of the RCMP, and probably a lot of them.
Who needs a laugh?

OH! Canada!!
Just saw a Budweiser ad where ‘Freebird’ plays in the background while a Clydesdale jumps over a log while an eagle flies over the Clydesdale and the sun rises over a field. Then someone slams a can of Bud down on their deck while ‘Made in America’ appears on the screen.
The only thing more American than that ad is a school shooting that no one does anything about.
Didn’t a version of that play in the Super Bowl?
And there’s nothing more American than beer brewed by a Belgium-based multinational conglomerate.
If it did I missed it. Probably because I was home alone drinking beers with a higher amount of alcohol in them than Budweiser.
Yeah, that was a Superb Owl ad.
FREE BIRD!
I had never heard of a “Nick & Nora” glass before. I had seen them, and have probably drank out of them, but don’t recall hearing that particular name for it.
Once again, I learn something new from Sharkbait. Thanks!!

The movies are fun!
The Supreme Court has (surprisingly) struck down most of the tarriffs as an executive overreach. Not sure what is more likely to happen in the next year – the Raiders win the Super Bowl, or I get some kind of refund.
I’m a Daywalker. I’ll check Truth Social for his majesty’s perfectly rational and reasonable response…assuming they haven’t hidden his phone.
God I hope he strokes out.
That’s not surprising at all. The tariffs adversely affect the economy. Nothing else matters in America, especially a cult of personality when the head of that cult has take to (allegedly) shitting himself in public.
Plus SCOTUS doesn’t want to cede ALL their power like the repubs in congress are
Also, they wanna HELP the GOP for the midterms.
Cape Canaveral or Cape Horn?
Cape Fear is always open.
How long before Metamucilini changes Canaveral to Cape Trump?
I’ve been in Chicago all week avoiding the buckets of water dumping down on California. Going to a steakhouse for dinner tonight, so very high probability of a martini to start. Haven’t been to a steakhouse in ages, there is a 100% chance of leftovers!
Ooh
THE FIXER
prosciutto-washed macallan 12 year, averna amaro, walnut bitters
Prosciutto washed somehow reminded me of the old Steve Martin joke.
People : Steve how can you be so damned funny all the time?
Martin : It’s easy… I put a slice of baloney in each shoe every morning… That way I feel… Funny…
Always loved his routine about a drunk at a Vegas show. “There must be 57 tits up there!!!”
Picking up the family at LAX yesterday during a downpour was a shit show. No rain today just very cold for LA. Think we’re heading to DTLA today for lunch and some visuals.
