Sharkbait’s Cocktail of the Week: Boxes, Boxes Everywhere

Hello from the new base of cocktail operations. The bar has been put in its place, however the bar books are still boxed up, and the glassware is still buried somewhere in my kitchen. At least the booze is a bit more accessible…

So what does this mean for the drink this week?

It means I should have built up a backlog of drinks that’s what. It also means I need to get creative here. I decided to utilize a nip of honey whiskey I got as part of a Christmas gift that is relatively accessible and a lemon to try to make a faux Gold Rush, a Fools Gold Rush if you will. Normally a Gold Rush involves bourbon, honey syrup and lemon. Since my honey is also buried in a box somewhere, the honey whiskey will do for now. I do plan on making a real version of this in the near future, so be on the lookout for that.

Fools Gold Rush

1.5 oz. Wild Turkey American Honey

Lemon wedge

Add the whiskey to a glass, squeeze the lemon wedge into the whiskey. Add ice and a lemon twist.

This might be the saddest looking drink I’ve made

The nose is citrusy and sweet. No discernable whiskey aroma at all.

The sip is quite nice actually. The sweet honey flavor starts off before the fresh lemon juice cuts it and brightens up the overall flavor.

That’s….about it unfortunately. This preparation is just a whiskey with lemon. Of which, is a fantastic combination in it’s own right, but a cocktail it does not make (If we’re going by the rule that a cocktail needs three ingredients). However beggars cannot be choosers. The goal for this weekend is to unpack, clean, and re-stock the bar so I can get back to proper beverage preparation.

“Ship of Fools” by Karl Wallinger’s World Party. If you thought The Waterboys kicked ass on a few of their earlier albums, he’s the reason. He was an early environmental advocate- probably read Edward Abbey’s “The Monkey Wrench Gang” just like all those other Communist bastards!

He showed up at The Lieutenant’s Pump (in Ottawa, on Elgin Street) after a concert way back in the day. Us regulars felt sorry for the servers that had to stand hand and foot behind him.

SonOfSpam

Why? Was he a demanding bitch?

Gumbygirl

I love this. I’ve always been surprised that he wasn’t a huge star. But I think the Waterboys were more about Mike Scott than him.

Horatio Cornblower

SLC Punk was an underrated movie.

“Golden Years”. Bowie’s output during the 70’s is the best argument for cocaine.

Songs about “Fools”, “Rush” or “Gold”? I’m in.

Freda Payne’s hips could bring it. I present “Band of Gold”.

He’s looking like a less-talented Gord Downie. Do you think it was intentional?

You know… I’m starting to overthink about the Chief’s vacay. The Payton Clots took Week 17 and a bye, then lost in the Divisional. (Source: biased and damaged brain.) The Chiefs could too. It’s the KHunt revenge game. KC’s D isn’t WOW. The Browns are objectively on fiya.
Bills vs. Browns for the AFC Champ. and being the eventual Superb Owl winner might happen before the apocalypse. More likely trigger it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with making do with what you got. Plus, I’ve never really subscribed to the three ingredient rule. If you add bitters to a Jack and Coke does that make it a cocktail?

Who gives a fuck, it tastes good.

Hear hear. For stuff that’s ultimately judged by taste, caveats add nothing important.
I liked the bare-bones attitude too.
