All four of us were basically the LPO (leading petty officer) for four different divisions in reactor department of the boat. We were all pretty damn good NCO’s.
There is the whole 90/10 principle…where 90% of the work is done by 10% of the people. Like if you are good at your job and you gave a shit, you were on the fast track to getting brutally burned out. NCO is one of those jobs that are vitally important, but if you are good at it, no one fucking notices. And a lot of it is just being a shit filter, taking it from both ends of the chain of command.
We were the folks that were always fighting the command to actually get things to run as opposed to just accepting the crap. Two of the guys have PhD’s and the third is a lawyer. I just got a BS in engineering. I honestly think you could put the four of us doing anything and we could figure it out. A decent amount of brain power.
We started bullshitting about the old days and I started realized as we were bringing up old funny stories of folks doing stupid shit, that almost every single one of the people that were the idiots in the stories…stayed in.
It was a perfect microcosm of how the military and the government in general does a fucking terrible job at retaining the right people.
10 minutes into Super Troopers 2 and the biggest takeaway is that the Kids in the Hall are all old as fuck now
