I know we are all doing our best – or what qualifies as “we”, or “doing”, or “best” – under these trying circumstances. But what have you put your time towards? Hopefully not learning some second- or third language like some smarty-pants!
Like many people, I have taken to cooking experimentation. Now, as an avowed fan of the Sunday Gravy, there are many recipes I have tried & successfully mimicked.
So this week, I decided to go into my own arsenal, and – without posting my own recipes, because I am not stepping on toes – I like to think I did a pretty good job at making WineWife happy she continues to stay married to me.
On Monday, I made deep dish, using a cast-iron skillet.
The recipe for dough is pretty straightforward – flour, yeast, salt, sugar; the key is what you do to if afterwards. I chose to add Umami seasoning to the dough base, to give it some added flavour. Toppings were whatever I could find in the fridge. The verdict was “delicious”, and what I learned was where to cut down on dough production so I could have enough for calzones the next day.
Thursday night, I took a frozen pork loin & a half-pack of unused bacon & turned that into a wrapped pork loin.
This was even simpler – the only real addition was the honey-mustard glaze I needed to make to use as glue to affix the bacon to the loin, beyond the effect the skewers had. It tasted as good that night as it did a couple of days later when we reheated the rest for leftovers.
So let me know what you’ve been up to. I think we can all agree that yeah right‘s been the boss with all of the good food ideas, and that thick sauce is better than runny, but to get ready for tomorrow’s showcase let’s talk about what we’ve each done during this nonsense to keep from dropping the weight.
Tonight’s … entertainment?:
- Super Bowl LIV: San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs – 8:00 PM | FOX
- A two-hour replay of both the game & halftime show.
- The Great British Baking Show – 8:00 PM | PBS
- The remaining bakers make “saucy puds” (delicate cakes with a gooey filling or saucy surprise); tiramisu; and baked Alaska.
- Speaking of prep for “Sunday Gravy”…
- 30 for 30 – 8:00 PM | ESPN2
- A repeat of the repeat about the antagonists from Episodes 3 & 4 of “The Last Dance”.
- The distinctive late-’80s Detroit Pistons squad under Chuck Daly is chronicled, featuring core players Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, Rick Mahorn, Joe Dumars and John Salley, as well as top rivals of the era.
- Classic boxing – TSN
- 10:30 PM: De La Hoya vs. Chavez
- 11:30 PM: De La Hoya vs. Trinidad
Not a lot going on, so please do entertain yourselves talking about food before we all go to school tomorrow.

It’s not funny if you have to explain it hours later
This one is still funny again.
Now I can make a biscuit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6j97ZvyuSc
I made Brazilian cheese bread the other day (okay, like 2 weeks ago or more? I don’t know time is an illusion) and it was amazing. I used a mix for the dry ingredients, but provided my own cheese and wet ingredients. It seems there’s a tapioca element to the dry ingredients, but shouldn’t be hard to put together. It’s a solid biscuit alternate
Will take recipe hints.
Looking at some recipes, I think the mix I used was just pure tapioca flour. It’s pretty easy, and I used cheddar rather than parm, so don’t worry about the exact cheese: https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-po-de-queijo-brazilian-cheese-bread-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-176118
I didn’t do a lot of the process listed here, I just mixed everything together and baked, so maybe the dry ingredient ‘mix’ did something, but I doubt it. it’s probably just easier than they say.

Watching The Negotiator after Kevin Spacey’s been outed as a Serial Molester isn’t the same. Now, I’m rooting for Chris Sabian to lose control of the situation and for Danny Roman and all the hostages to die.
Its like watching “The Ref” but now rooting for his marriage to fall apart, watching “Glengarry Glen Ross” but now praying he gets blamed for stealing the money, and watching “Superman Returns” but now praying that Superman saves the day and defeats Lex Luther (that one hurts me the most – that was the second best Lex Luther only behind John Shea).
I would’ve mentioned “American Beauty” but that would seem to be triggering way too close to reality in multiple ways.
If the Angela Hayes was Andy Hayes, a 16 year old handsome lacrosse player. SHIT; I just creeped myself out and that is not easy.
Yeah, I know. I tried to type it and come up with an example but it kept getting worse and worse.
You have to separate the output from the person. We hold people from 20 years ago to our standards because that seems like a fairly recent time. But it’s not really. Can we still regard the Constitution as a good document when some of the drafters were slave owners? I think yes. Can we still see the contributions of Marin Luther King as good despite some bad shit about his personal life? Again, easily yes. Those are maybe extreme examples, but people can be both good and bad. The bad doesn’t have to taint the good. It’s worth it to prevent more bad and maybe in the course prevent more good, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the good that has already happened.
Sorry, that’s a bit scattered, I’m 1.5 bottles of wine in. Think it still made sense though?
Yeah, that’s the problem with cancel culture. It’s not black and white.
Just because I find Ariana Grande sexy doesn’t mean I’m a total pervert.
Yes I try, but a lot of the time I just can’t. Bill Cosby for instance; he did a lot of great comedy, but I can’t get around that.
Aw, hell. I forgot about him, but I think my brain did that on purpose as a coping mechanism.
Several of the “framers” saw the hypocrisy at the time.
“Of course it was written to apply to rich and wealthy white men, it just got out of hand.”
-Rich white men
It’s weird, I can do suspension of disbelief with people, but not so much when films violate physics, the book, or history. I think it’s because I don’t really think people I haven’t met are real people, so while I’m not going to do stupid shit to endanger them, that’s just general empathy, and it’s much easier to compartmentalize them into good bits and bad bits than it would be with someone I knew. I don’t interact with them, I don’t have to accept or reject them, I can take the good bits and condemn the bad bits, and because I don’t interact with them at all it doesn’t matter what attitude I take
I’m mixing tenses. Again, wine.
The history thing can drive me nuts, especially when they are pretending to be accurate. Depends on the movie, but a lot has to be fiction removed, or it bothers me. It’s better for your entertainment purposes, just for some I can’t compartmentalize their person and it ruins it.
I used to be good at movies, but it started with ‘historical’ movies. I was already firmly on the path, but the one that ruined most movies for me was probably ‘Gangs of New York’. It’s a freely adapted version of a not actually very accurate historical account. It’s like if we fast forwarded 50 years and someone did a sensationalized version of the National Enquirer account of the Lady Di story. It ruined everything since I realized I don’t know how many levels removed from reality any dramatized account is. It’s one thing to say shit is imaginary, it’s another to pretend it’s based in reality but reality is a far sniff off
I no longer trust anything without a reference section at the end
Agreed on that one. I watched it again with that in mind and…. kind of enjoyed it.
Yeah, I know. I’m watching it like I watch “Addams Family” and “Who’s the Boss”. True, Christina Ricci and Alyssa Milano grew up to be hot, but that doesn’t make it weird when you watch the shows. Just as long as your separate the two, its not weird.
Also, your drunken sage advice made sense.
You ain’t gonna light the grill from here. You shouldn’t have left the valve open this long.
You can’t get a proper fireball or eyebrow trim without leaving the valve open
Whom among us has not…….
I used to crank up my lighters to do a triplish large flame. I sometimes forgot to warn people who bummed a light. Sometimes because I forgot that most people didn’t do that, other times because I thought it would be fun to see them flinch
You just triggered a high school memory; I had long hair as us “freaks” did in those days, somebody lit a pipe for me under similar circumstances and the whole crowded room got the burnt hair smell….. it wasn’t enough to really notice looking at me, but it was definitely time to go to a different party.
I think I actually learned how to crank up a lighter from someone who lent a lighter in somewhat similar circumstances, except it was a music festival (HFStival for anyone who grew up in the DC area) rather than a party
Weird how one remembers the embarrassments and slights better than some of the good times.

Perfect.
Since we’ve gotten to the music posting portion of the ee’n, this was one of my favorite songs as a child. My parents had it on vinyl and I knew the entire album. This is the title track. Damn, I still got it in my head, I guess if you learn all the lyrics to something as an 8 yr old you remember them forever.

1) Trader Joe’s has the best ginger cookies, both the snaps and the ginger chunk ones
2) Past sitcoms all had to have the romantic interest, and they could only tease it for so long until it fucked up the premise of the show, so even the best sitcoms started sucking after season 5 or 6. This is unacceptable in the age of streaming and binge watching
3) My keyboard driver is fucked up and I’m too lazy to fix it, instead I just spend way longer typing everything to make sure I can place the letter ‘a’ where it needs to be. Exclamation points are especially difficult.
4) I’ve managed to get a decent home exercise routine while at home, thanks to purchasing a rowing machine and a kettle bell. Also just bought a speed bag, but turns out anyone under 6’4″ needs to purchase additional installation equipment so that company can fuck right off.
5) I’m cooking about once a week and ordering meals about once a week. Getting my veggies, also getting yummy fats and sugars and drinking far too much. It all evens out and weight has been stable, although suspect I’m losing muscle and gaining fat since I’m not lifting.
6) Popcorn is fucking delicious and has lots of fiber, as do veggies and lentils and beans. I also have plenty of TP, as I bulk buy it every 2 years and just took shipment about 2 months before lockdown.
7) I should buy more beer, since beer comes in smaller units than wine, so drinking one or two beer is not a big deal, whereas drinking one or two units of wine…..
8) I also have liquor (gin and bourbon) but that’s free pour so the unit size is like virus spread, exponential increase without drastic containment measures

Why are you insulting thumbs everywhere?

This has to be illegal in at least 140 countries.
Yeah, but they’re probably all landlocked, like Switzerland, San Marino, Slovenia, Andorra, and Bolivia. Plus, she’s pretty hot, which forgives a lot of sins. If her accent doesn’t give you a woody, I don’t know what will…
Trivia question: there are only two doubly landlocked countries (i.e. landlocked and only border other landlocked countries) can you name them?
There’s got to be a “Stan” in there.
One is a ‘stan’ the other is not
I’m pretty sure that’s in Africa. Lemme see…
Without looking at the map, I’m going to say Rwanda and Burundi.
/looks at map
Nope, I was wrong. It’s actually Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan (assuming you don’t count the Caspian Sea)
[Caspian Sea sighs heavily, looks at shores]
Correct, the Caspian has no outlet to the ocean system (and associated trade) as a whole, so yes, it doesn’t really count. So it’s a stein and a stan
Actually, it does. The Volga and Don rivers connect at Volgograd through a system of locks, linking the Caspian to the Black Sea and then on to the oceans through the Mediterranean.
Sorry to be that guy, but Slovenia is not landlocked. I’ve actually driven through their tiny bit of coastline on the Adriatic.
Still; it is very slovenly.

First stages of re-locating Fortress LemonJello have begun. Lady LemonJello wants the kitchen cabinets repainted. So we’ve gave them all a coat of primer today. Tore the carpet out of the basement and the laminate wood flooring is ready to be installed. Started on getting the kill zones around the moat cleared of brush and laying in a mixed density mine field to channel the enemy into pre-selected kill zones.
All in all, it was a good day.
Did you use your AK?
Alas, no. Nor did I get to take out the drop-top, with the switch to make the ass drop.

I’ve only stumbled across a few. More of a D&D thing. For as much of a nerd as I am, tabletop gaming never did anything for me.
Trying out one of those goofy Total Gym things Chuck Norris used to pretend made him a martial artist at 3 am between the Girls Gone Wild commercials I was so fond of when I was 14 and the psychopath free money Riddler suit guy. It seems to work so far, but it’s weird to work with.

Tonight on Svengoolie: Frankenstein ( the one from the 30’s! ) They filmed a bunch of it right here in Big Bear, the lake he throws the little girl in is Big Bear Lake.
Really? That’s some good trivia! Where on the lake was it, do you know?
I’m not sure, but when you drive up, right at the light by the dam where you go straight to BB or turn left to Fawnskin, if you look up to the right there are the ruins of a stone building that was in the movie.
I’ve been to Fawnskin.
It’s a happening place!
Found a funny:
I stare at my phone like a worn down sailor stares at the harsh, unforgiving sea that stole the best years of his life and 2 of his fingers.
Hey, THIS GUY is a moron and thought he was posting in this thread, but it was the morning thread. So to re-post:
Hey, I found my pink hood!
Now I can record Pomp and Circumstance… eh, tomorrow. I’ve had a headache all day and it’s not requested until the 10th.
Pink hood?
Sounds like KKGay.
Dammit, I was expecting a clit joke.
/Music is pink for commencements.
I thought the pink hood was when Don and Don Jr washed their hoods together.
I could not be happier right now. I’m on my couch, doors locked, watching a tv show I really like. Got a full rye and coke, a full cold beer, a roast beef sandwich, and some bbq chips on the table.
Dog is fed and walked. Full pack of cigarettes and a couple joints rolled and ready. Fuck family bliss, I got all I need.
Is the “roast beef sandwich” a euphemism? Either way I think you’re in good shape.
If it was that would be the only way to improve the situation. But the sandwich doesn’t try to make me get up early for a hike so I’ll stick with that.
Aha. “A hike” being another euphemism I assume.
Hah. It isn’t. And that’s why I’m not willing to give up my weed and liquor.
That’s doing shut down proper!
Can’t decide whether to start some dinner prep now and have a good meal, or say fuck it and keep relaxing with wine and finish my leftovers. Not that my leftovers suck, mind you.
Compromise achieved: skirt steak is marinating, so am I. Fajitas to follow once we’re both nice and tender.
I posted this in the morning thread thinking it was this one, but do you have a full list of teams for your tourney?
On various pieces of paper I do. Haven’t digitized it all yet. Will post the other three regional first round results when they’re available, which might be later tonight or tomorrow.
Any particular franchise you’re interested in? Or just wondering who the top seeds are?
Honestly I’d want the whole bracket, but I’m assuming the top seeds are the ’27 Yanks (as you already posted), ’98 Yanks, ’76 Reds, and… either the ’39/’61 Yanks, ’29 A’s, or ’70 O’s?
If I can get it all in electronic format, I’ll post a link. Until then, here’s your top four seeds by region:
Vin Scully Region
1- 1927 Yankees (won first round)
2- 1970 Orioles (ditto)
3- 1946 Red Sox *** eliminated in 1st round by ’24 Senators***
4 – 1955 Dodgers (won first round)
Harry Carey Region
1 — 1998 Yankees (won first round)
2 — 1902 Pirates (ditto)
3 — 1986 Mets *** eliminated in 1st round by 2015 Royals ***
4 — 1907 Cubs (won first round)
Jack Buck Region
1 — 1975 Reds *** eliminated in 1st round by 1967 Red Sox ***
2 — 1939 Yankees
3 — 1942 Cardinals
4 — 1932 Yankees
Bob Uecker Region
1 — 1929 Athletics (won 1st round)
2 — 1961 Yankees (won 1st round)
3 — 1984 Tigers
4 — 1905 Giants
Read your post from the morning thread. Yes, they play at each team’s then-accurate ballpark, although the home advantage is a little fucked up, as it just goes to whichever team is listed first in that matchup rather than the higher seed; I didn’t have an option to fix that. (OOTP is great for a lot of things, but this is the first time I’ve done this historical tournament function.)
Which I suppose is ok in a way, as it’s not like they did anything to “earn” the seeding. I loosely went off a “50 Best Teams” article I found, with tweaks to suit my own prejudices as well as trying to spread out franchises and eras, i.e. no Yankees-Yankees matchup and no Year X vs. Year X+2 for the first two rounds if I could manage it.
I don’t usually open sparkling wine by myself, because you’ve got to finish the bottle. But I’ve resolved not to be afraid of committment.
We split a very nice pinot noir with dinner.
La Crema.
Paired perfectly.
I don’t know which one you had — they make a range at different prices — but La Crema is one of the rare exceptions to my rule that you shouldn’t bother buying pinot under ~$25/bottle. Easy to find decent cabs or tempranillos or syrahs or lots of others, but pinot is tricky.

Heh. Played for the ’83 Astros, which I already knew because of the Strat-O-Matic imitator (Precision Sports Baseball) that I owned back then. I still have odd bits of 1983 MLB statistics stuck in my head.
Fun fact – I called some of his kid’s minor league baseball games. Used to call him “the big tuna”, which the American listeners never understood. Because “thon “ is French for tuna.
It’s amazing how much French you pick up just from food labels.
Speaking of baking.
I’ll be right back.

De la Hoya vs. Trinidad: uf. A personal recap:
On the night of that fight, my then wife was 6-7 months pregnant. We both quit smoking and drankin when we found found out mah virility defeated The Pill. But for the fight, WE agreed I could have a coupla.
Even drunk, I thought Oscar won that fight. Howevah, TITO TITO TITO TITO.

SPOILER ALERT: it was a nice fight.
I always disliked De La Hoya.

I made bread. It was very dense. I watched a Good Eats and learned I did many things wrong.
Then I went back to drinking. Grain is better served as liquor. Give me my rye in liquid form, thank you.
Toasted bread with butter is really, really delicious. Being lucky is realizing it’s very, VERY cheap.
Otherwise,I hear ya.
It is indeed. I still ate it, exactly like that. Toasted and buttered hot. I don’t throw that kind of thing away.
Shame about the underwear.

Happy Saturday.
Thanks for the shout out beer guy. I’ve given TAJ the kitchen today and he promises to share one week from tomorrow. I’m messing around with homemade tortillas, eyeballing some new bread recipes.
Rye maybe?
And I’ve got an idea on creating a sourdough starter so we can all bake together.
I’ve mentioned before that at least we can hope more people cook from scratch.
Today I bought 2# of freshly made corn tortillas for $8. Deal of the year, IMHO.
Can’t get wheat flour in less than a 50-lb bag (and I was tempted!) but they had masa harina, so I’m seeing some homemade tortillas in my future.
That is a damn fine deal. The closest I get is some packaged corn tortillas made by two Mexican sisters who moved here and sell tortillas at farmers markets.
In the past five years Mexican folks have taken the place of filthy Quebec teens with white dreadlocks and no memory of their last shower for seasonal agriculture work here in the okanagan. Picking fruit and what not. I have no doubt they’re far more productive and our local Mexican and South American restaurant scene has improved by leaps and bounds.
I had no idea what pozole roja (?) was a few years ago and I hate my past self for not seeking it out.
