Your “So…..Anarchy?” Tuesday Evening Open Thread

NFL Notes:

There’s not a lot going on today, what with #BlackoutTuesday being the prevailing social media sentiment. Many teams & players are respecting the cause.

  • The most poignant quote linking everything together came from NBA legend Kareem Abdul Jabbar:

“There’s been a lot of talk of how horrible the rioting and looting is,” Abdul-Jabbar said in an interview with Scott Van Pelt on ESPN’s SportsCenter. “That is no way to demonstrate, but people should think about the fact that Colin Kaepernick tried to demonstrate peacefully. What did he get? He got ostracized and lost his job. He was blackballed. That was a peaceful protest about an issue that is very real, and no one could acknowledge that.”

In Vince McMahon football-related news:

  • The XFL’s bankruptcy seems to be marching right along, as an August 3 asset-auction date has been set.
    • There are as many as 20 potential buyers who have signed non-disclosure agreements while exploring a potential purchase of the league.
      • There is one unnamed bidder who is considered “very capable” of restarting the league.
    • No word on the state of Oliver Luck v Vincent Kennedy McMahon.

Thankfully, R-Truth is back as champion – for the 36th time. (Don’t ask.) We no longer have the spectre of an endzone celebration turning into a title defense hanging over the season, thank goodness. That would be anarchy.

Today’s good internet dog is Phyllis, a senior rescue dog that in her mentions is clearly more NWA than Ice-T.

From what I gather, her owner’s previous dog was a Shih Tzu named Marnie & she passed away in March at 18 years.

Marnie was apparently internet famous, drawing mentions from among others Missy Elliott. She also got a write-up on CNN and the New York Times after she died.

Tonight’s … entertainment?:

  • America in Pain: What Comes Next?  – 9:00PM | ABC
    • The special will take a close look at the hurt and anger sweeping the nation, the reasons behind those feelings, stories of protesters, and why this moment may be a turning point for race in America.
  • Korea Baseball Organization:
    • Lotte Giants at Kia Tigers – 2:00 AM | ESPN2
    • Kiwoom Heroes vs. Hanwha Eagles – 5:25AM | TSN4

NBCSN also is showing Super Bowl XLIX, in case you want to see Richard Sherman make “that” face.

We got to nearly 300 comments last night without any sports. Unless you want to count the occasional “LA CAR CHASE!!11!1” interjection or video of a protester outrunning the cops as sports. At this point, I do.

yeah right

Had a very enlightening conversation with our building safety guy. We have that because where I work actually prepared for a FUCKING PANDEMIC AND NAME THE OTHER COMPANIES WHO DID THAT!

He’s African American and I am not and he’s a lifelong LA resident. We talked about the differences/similarities to 1992 and agreed that this isn’t the same because as our own Balls said, that was an LA specific story.

I mentioned that we had a pretty damn big protest right in front on my dojo on Sunday, details to come, and I said I was impressed by the diversity in the crowd.

He had a fantastic response saying it’s great that everybody recognizes this and demands change. But if you are really fully involved you’re an ally, You’re involved. And just by marching one time with a handmade sign doesn’t mean you’re all in for change.

Stay involved and MEAN what you’re saying. A fucking sign isn’t going to change this.

We have to be fully involved.

It means more than just marching once or twice.

I took that shit to heart.

Now all I have to do is act on it.

Can you?

SonOfSpam

I will vote accordingly.

I will NOT watch Tyler Perry movies.

That’s the line.

I’m glad to hear what he said. He’s right. What’s required is action, not protests.

yeah right

I love where I work because we’ve been together so long and have a shared history that none of this is contrived and we can all speak openly.

I’ve seen new shit every day for that last 2 plus months that I’ve never seen ever.

Don T

Protest is action. It’s the worthwhile part of democracy. The rest of democracy is electioneering and the intelligence community and military following orders ‘cause the Prez said and he was elected.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Found an interesting documentary over on Amazon Prime about a VERY little known chapter of history that occurred as the sun set on the British Empire 50 years ago, search “Operation Oman.” Personal connection: Did a port visit to load cargo for the battle group in Muscat, Oman, back in the early 80s. We were allowed to go down on to the pier and drink two beers.

SonOfSpam

I remember that. Captain & Tennille immortalized that in a song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBYV_7a0FQs

Dolph Ucker

I was an Air Force C-141B loadmaster for a couple decades back there. Used to fly resupply missions to Masirah, Oman out of Diego Garcia. Over and over and over. Great lobster in Oman, not many people know that. Ex-pat’s club on Diego was a good time, I think. Do not miss those days. At all.

Viva La Tabula Raza

I flew on a 141 from DGar to Masirah, October 1982, on a very uncomfortable pallet of canvas seats. Helo’d directly from the airstrip at Masirah to USS Sacramento for three days before getting vert-rep’d to my ship. Had spent the previous week as transient ready slave labor force at DGar, tearing down the nipa huts that the SeaBees had built when they landed back in 1970. Had several liberty calls on the Footprint of Freedom/Armpit of Liberty over the next three years. Favorite memory was the signage on the roads put up by the Brit administrators, “1,000 pound fine for abusing the chickens.” Yeah, fuck that place.

Unsurprised

Fellow law-talking guys, isn’t the Supreme Court supposed to overturn Roe this week?

Horatio Cornblower

I know there’s a case coming up this session, not sure when.

I’m no expert but from what I do follow it looks like Roberts is drifting left, (in that he’s not a foaming maniac like Kavanaugh), perhaps out of disgust with Trump, and may be the 5th vote needed to save it.

Or not; I don’t know. I live in good ol’ blue CT. It’ll always be abortions for some, tiny American flags for others round these parts.

Redshirt

Roberts is definitely the swing vote. If anything, he’ll prefer for marginal change, not blow it up.

He represents the Judicial Branch. He wants to create the illusion it does not cater to Trump.

You have to remember: Roberts isn’t a Trump appointee, he’s Bush 43’s. That means he’s a conservative, but he knows the Constitution and Laws and believes they should be strictly enforced. Nothing more, nothing less.

Dunstan

It’s June Medical Services v. Russo, argued back in March. The term is ending soon, and it’s one of a handful of decisions outstanding.

I doubt you’ll see it used to overturn Roe and Casey, if for no other reason than that it wasn’t one of the questions presented and wasn’t argued at all.

In the long term, Roberts might be hesitant to garner the publicity of explicitly overruling those precedents. He’s more likely to follow former Justice Kennedy’s lead and simply allow the states to whittle away the right to abortion through bullshit restrictions until there’s essentially only a theoretical right left.

And in fact June provides two avenues to do that. First, there’s the substantive question, which is one of these bullshit laws that requires abortion clinic doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital, even though (1) it’s very hard to get such privileges, in part because so many hospitals don’t want to credential abortion doctors, and in part because admitting privileges usually are reserved for doctors who will be referring a significant number of patients, and abortions are so safe that abortion providers rarely have cause to do so; and (2) there’s no real benefit to the patients. But SCOTUS recently overturned a virtually identical law from another state, so it would be a little embarrassing for Roberts to uphold this one. But at the last minute, the government tossed in a standing argument, and that’s a promising ground if you’re an anti-woman asshole. Rule that the clinics don’t have standing, and that way only the pregnant women themselves have standing. But pregnancies don’t last long enough for most court cases, so patients will generally lose standing partway through because they either have their abortion or deliver a baby or miscarry. Roe recognized an exception in such circumstances to address violations of rights that are repeatedly but can evade judicial review. But just torch that rule, too, and suddenly abortion is a legal right, but nobody can vindicate that right in court.

This is why the right wins. Because they will hold their nose and vote for any asshole who will put Federalist Society drones on the bench, while the left preens about moral purity and declares that talking about the Supreme Court is “blackmail.””

Dunstan

If Roe is overturned, the next time the GOP controls the House and Senate and White House, you’ll see a federal anti-abortion law.

What, you think their “sincere commitment to state’s rights” will prevent them from doing so? They’ve already tried before — the so-called Partial Birth Abortion Act, for one.

I mean, their daughters and mistresses will always be able to get abortions. Discreet doctors or “shopping trips to Toronto/Vancouver/Montreal.”

Well, this is now the 13th time Jurassic Park is being played on TV. This is not good because I’m start to notice errors that are distracting from a great film.

– How come there is no employee entrance way that doesn’t involve going through the dinosaur paddocks? That’s like having a zoo where you have to go through the gorilla or cheetah enclosures. Even if he was trying to avoid security, he had that can of shaving cream to smuggles out the embryos. What? Jurassic Park’s security is better than Customs? He could’ve gotten away and not had to shut down the fences. His motive wasn’t revenge; it was money.

tl;dr I miss sports.

herodotus450

When Grant pretends the fence is electrified, he acts like he’s unable to let go of the fence because the current is forcing his muscles to contract. But later on, when little Bobby ascot is on the fence and it actually is electrified, he gets blown off like it exploded. Well, which is it!?

Redshirt

Actually, I think its both. (Note: I got a C- in Physics, so please correct if wrong.)

Grant was on the ground, so he was grounded. The electricity would’ve gone straight through him, causing his muscles to engage, tightening his grip while his internal organs were fried.

Robert Ascot had his hands and feet on the wires, so he wasn’t grounded. The electricity would’ve stayed in the wire. He would’ve however gotten an electric burn on his hands, which explains why he left go. He would’ve also gotten a shock from the contact, which is why he stopped breathing.

herodotus450

I’ve actually looked into it before, and basically it depends. Depends on the exact voltage and current of the fence, and maybe there are different types of electric fences? And also the humidity of the air, and how exactly they are touching the wires, which could cause arcing and an ex-plo-sion. Also, how thick are the soles on their boots? What kind of rubber are they made of? Etc.
If those cowards at the Experiment Review Board would ever man up, I could find out the truth once and for all.

High voltage AC will throw you, possibly already dead or with your heart muscle tied into a knot

High voltage DC will make your hands contract into a ball and give you a death grip on the live conductor

If the voltage is high enough in both cases, it can actually blow the skin off most of your body, not just the contact points

You may now resume eating
