So, yesterday was Record Store Day, and I picked myself up a little vinyl treat.
That’s right – the Foo Fighters released a special album for the day – called “Hail Satin“.

It’s five Gibb songs sung as disco covers & five live versions of songs from their “Medicine at Midnight” album. I’ve got to say, as a fan, they are all fantastic.
Of course, disco is having another moment. July 12th wasn’t just Viva’s & my birthday, it was also the anniversary of “Disco Demolition Night”.
Depending on who you ask, it was simply a novelty promotion by legendary character Bill Veeck to draw fans to watch his miserable team, or a racist & homophobic reaction to the popularity of disco music in American culture. Given the rise of BLM last year and the 50th anniversary of Stonewall this year, this is another historical incident that has been revisited in light of the new era we are in.
(If you want to read tons more, just type “disco sucks as racist” into Google & go nuts. I don’t feel like belaboring the point on a Sunday evening.)
What can’t be denied is that the Bee Gees were the target for plenty of (musical) abuse for a good period of time, but have since come out the other side appreciated as musicians & songwriters, an example brought full-circle by the record I purchased yesterday.
Tonight’s sports:
- MLB:
- Red Sox vs. Yankees – 7:00pm | ESPN / TSN
- Gold Cup:
- Mexico vs. El Salvador – 7:00pm
- Guatemala vs. trinidad & Tobago – 7:00pm
Oh lord, the pickin’s are slim tonight, and the NBA doesn’t resume until Tuesday. That puts tomorrow as somehow worse.
